[Webcomic] Webcomic Appreciation Jamboree

Spoilered for REAAAAAAAAAAAALLY long.

The artist is Matt Rhodes (obviously) and he made that comic as his entry for the The Anthology Project

This comic was my entry for the Anthology Project. It was a great chance to cut loose and tell a story of our choosing. I don’t want to explain too much about My Hero, as it is my hope that the story can stand alone without me. I’d prefer it if each reader took from it what they would without my commentary. A few people have asked about my choice to tell the story without dialogue, and honestly I just don’t feel like I’m a good writer. I wanted to tell this story and I think my clumsy attempts at dialogue or exposition would just have gotten in the way.

Ladies and gentlemen, I spoiler this Sinfest comic not only because its bad but because the last panel is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO depressing you will be tempted to put on a robe and watch the Princess bride nine times in a row.
Dear lord, what the fuck has happened to this comic! The dragon has no wise dialogue any more and is now some heavy handed pollution metaphor, Lil E's back story is needless, there are too many DAMN side characters, and Slick and Monique are hardly in it as WELL as not interacting nearly as much as in the original strips! And WHY?! To force in a fucking feminist message?! Sure, thats a good enough reason to suck out the soul of your comic and everything that made it unique! Oh, and that comic where you said you were "Misguided" when you referred to writing your edgier strips, yeah that wasn't a slap in the face to your old fans AT ALL!

It's funny - I just read a "Top Webcomics" list yesterday, putting the one's I wasn't reading on my list to check out.

Except Sinfest, because Halforums.

Yeah, it's pretty crummy how Tatsuya took one of the best strips on the net and turned it into one of the worst. I mean, it's his strip, so he can do as he pleases, but I can't remember when a shark has been so very emphatically jumped.

It really was, the last story was Lil' Evil losing his memory and then BAM feminazis. And why does it seem like the devil is ONLY working on screwing over chicks in this universe now, wasn't he a more abstract symbol of evil?

What I hate most about the new strips is how Monique stops acting like her old slutty self because APPARENTLY that was all the patriarchy's plan. No it wasn't, she was just a sexually liberated character. The new strips outright demonize sexuality, and makes any person who has ANY sexual desire out to be a devil(in Slick's case his sexual desires LITERALLY become a devil). So basically the message now is woman are perfect beings incapable of any wrongs, and having any sexual desire is bad. Just...ugh.

Oh, you noticed too how the "good guys" are all either prepubescent militant feminists or a post-menopausal wiccan?

Damn straight. Whats even WEIRDER about the sisterhood, was that they were originally just a one-shot joke and were well...normal girls on tricycles! Now, they are the politically preachy mary sues who know WAY too much about porn culture for their age. With Slick, we the audience know he's older than he looks. The sisterhood on the otherhand are implied to be just as old as they appear so its really creepy for them to be talking about porn and sex as much as they do. Does their witch mom teach them about this? Its really, REALLY creepy.

Just don't go to the Sinfest forums. If there ever was a bunch of people who've drank the Kool-Aid, I tells ya, it's them. I once considered making an account and suggesting that maybe the Sisterhood wasn't so perfect, but after reading how these forumites converged on any opposition and tore it to shreds as anti-feminist... well, let's just say I'm not a glutton for punishment.

I know right? The posts these people make are like, LEGITIMATELY crazy its scary. And I know I'm a ridiculous tramp, but I am freakin' Spock in terms of logic compared to the people on that forum. Maybe its like Soul Eater, and Tatsuya Ishida is the Kishin straight up infecting people with madness.

Indeed, and the Yoko factor is a possibility. My theory is that he went all David Sim, had a nervous break-down ,went crazy and as more hardcore fans tried to rationalized said madness they themselves went mad. Of course we'll never really know the real reason because the guy is a straight up mystery, no blogs, no facebook posts, no twitter, the only thing you can find is one interview and a black and white photo. The guy is practically invisible.

It bothers me that Sinfest can go from "WOO, LADY POWER" to "Oh, no, my period has immobilized me" with a straight face. Pick a lane, already. Don't preach radical feminism and then imply that we are governed by our uteruses. Uteri? Our person oven.

Yeah, and the joke ain't even original neither! Read it in like, three autobiographical web-comics I'm pretty sure and they were all funnier than this. Mostly because they were written by well- ACTUAL WOMEN!

I think he takes some cues from reddit. I'm an Imgurian (naturally), so I see a lot of what images come down the pipe for reddit, and apparently there's been a lot of Aunt Irma posts there lately. In fact, this just came across right now -

Do you guys read JL8 at all? I think it's kinda adorable, tbh.

I've been trying to figure out how he got trapped in a locker because it tends to take a week or two to update. Now it finally makes sense.

I love JL8, and I've been sitting around wondering if I'd have to be angry with the comic because they forgot about one of J'onn's powers (like LEGO Batman 2 did).

Wait, why does J'onn have family but Bruce is still an orphan?
Because J'onn living alone would be odd? It's not like he has the surrogate father figure that Bruce has in Alfred.

You want to make this comic REALLY heartbreaking? Make Billy Batson a character and show how he goes home to an empty apartment every day.

That, or a basement where Billy Batson calls home with a stuffed tiger as his only companion.

Eh, I'm willing to be patient with it. I think it's about wrapped up now anyway. It's not been anywhere near as bad as slogging through the incident they're referring to in their conversation while it was happening.
