Wii U Love Thread

Know what game's full of shit? New Super Luigi U. There are games where when I die, it's because I fucked up. Then there are games where you were fucked over from the start. My wife was playing as near-invincible Nabbit and still bailed on me because of some of the jumps. I honestly can't blame her. The game's downright unfair once you get past the third world. On single player, all progress restarts at the last real save (which is outside of my control), so if you beat a level at the cost of your extra lives, and then die in the next level, that game over means you accomplished nothing.

Beating the entire game in NSMBU just to open the option to save anytime, as opposed to after beating a fort/castle, was pretty fucking stupid.

Big shareholders meeting yesterday, some highlights being more focus on the use of the tablet controller, DS games on the VC, and licensing IPs to other companies to help boost the rather sad sales of the system.

Now, let's all hope this means we get new, amazing Metroid and F-Zero games. I would kill a man in cold blood for a Bethesda-sized Metroid adventure.

You misunderstood what that IP business meant. Iwata wants to increase merchandizing, such as more Nintendo-themed toys, apparel, etc. Not games.

The DS games on the Wii U bit is sort of exciting--not sure how great those will look, but maybe they'll fix that shit with Zelda: Spirit Tracks for the VC version and I can actually finish it.

What I'm most excited about is Iwata's confirming they have a team working on an account-based system so your games will be tied to the Nintendo Network ID and not the hardware. Apple has a pretty good model for this, with having a system limit and the ability to reset that limit. No reason Nintendo can't do the same.

Today was a fun Nintendo day. First the news from Iwata.

I caved and bought Monster Hunter 3 for Wii U even though I already own the 3DS version and don't play it much. Some aspects of it are better on the Wii U (second analog stick, larger pad = easy access to items on the fly, monster fights feel more epic), but I was really hoping to get some multi-player experience, only to find the online port deserted. Hopefully it was just time of day or my shitty hunter level means I wasn't allowed in the presence of others. Even if no multi-player happens, I don't regret buying it for Wii U--I more regret buying it for 3DS in August. Hopefully being able to switch my character back and forth between consoles will change my mind and I'll be happy to have my hunter on-the-go as well.

Also got Four Swords Adventures for free, and my wife has gotten into top-down Zelda games thanks to A Link Between Worlds, so hopefully we'll enjoy that.

And best of all, as filmfanatic mentioned, A Link to the Past is now on Wii U VC. I upgraded for $1.50 and mmmm that's good Zelda.

I haven't been playing much Nintendo since the move to our new place. The stress of having such a huge and difficult family is really getting to me. Just want to sleep all the time.

We bought Zombie U forever ago and still haven't played it.
You're not the only one. Well... I got it for Christmas... of 2012. I played it once, and just never got back to it. Feels like a game I really need to immerse myself in.

ZombiU is a great game, but you really have to be in the mindset to play it. It's best played at night in the dark with the sound turned up.

The demo did not win me over. I sympathize that they wanted to get the gamepad involved, but in execution I kept feeling pulled out of the game. With Wind Waker, it made sense to have the menu for the inventory, but here for the Zombie U demo it felt like I had to keep getting pulled out of the environment to stare at my lap for a moment and perform some simple gesture that could've been handled if the stuff was on the screen.

It sounded good to me, until I tried it.

The backpack is less trouble to me than the damn scanner. I don't know how the developers of these Wii and Wii U games want me to be holding their devices, but I'm clearly doing it wrong.

That game was the main reason I bought my Wii U and I ended up hating it. Have played more Lego City than I ever did of that.

The Nintendo eShop will soon be carrying Game Boy Advance games. Some of the titles among the first releases include:

  • Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga
  • WarioWare, Inc.: Mega MicroGames
  • Metroid: Fusion
  • Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 4
  • Advance Wars

I was commenting on this today with Dirona, and I'll buy a Wii U once one of the following comes out:

  • Another 3D Metroid (aka: not Other M. I bought my cube upon the strength of Prime, and it was more than worth the cost of the system + game)
  • New Zelda
  • Super Mario Galaxy (or the like, full 3D) type game. Can be "not galaxy" as that's not required, but not a 2-D one. I have New Super Mario Brothers Wii and the DS one Great games. But I want more 3D Mario. It isn't worth a new system for not.
Maybe I'd need multiple of those before switching, but that it's been this long with none is not good.

That's already out.

Nintendo announced dates for the GBA VC releases on Wii U.

I own both a Wii U and 3DS and I'm still pissed that these are all going on just the Wii U. They originally released on a portable system; it's ridiculous to isolate them to a home console. Having GBA games is not going to convince anyone to go "Oh shit, I need to get a Wii U!" Only some solid Wii U original exclusives are going to do that. This is just punishing the 3DS for being more successful. Same with the eventual DS VC releases. If Nintendo wants to have some good VC releases for Wii U VC, they should get around to putting N64 and Gamecube games on there.

What is the point of releasing the GBA version of Yoshi's Island on Wii U VC? Why not just do the SNES version? This makes no sense.

Weird. I remember hearing it was "meh". And yet I can't remember where I heard that.

Oh well. Here's me looking for a sale now! After I move. And expenses. Etc.
The only "meh" I heard was from Yahtzee, and considering his usual outlook on Nintendo games, that could be considered praise.

Fair enough. I don't pay attention to his reviews much anymore since he trashed Valkyria Chronicles, which I absolutely loved. He also seems to have absolutely zero appreciation for "similar, but better" which IMO describes a lot of Mario and Zelda, which I generally like. So I don't think that was it. But my memory is not very.... what were we talking about again? Ah whatever.

I also loved Valkyria Chronicles and disagreed with him on it, but it was his recommendation related to that review that got me into XCOM: Enemy Unknown, which has become a favorite. His reviews are funny, even if I disagree with him. He didn't even bother to review A Link Between Worlds--for all I know he didn't even play it--as he spent the review as an open letter to Nintendo.

I think you may be thinking of reviews of New Super Mario Bros. U, which, while not hot garbage, was extremely forgettable.

Speaking of, Champion Road is fucking EVIL!
I think, last I played, I was all clear up to the end of World Flower, though that boss rush kicked my ass for a good handful of tries (getting them all in what, 300 seconds?). Unfortunately I don't think I have the patience to top every flag plus getting all the stamps/stars to open World Crown.

I made sure to get all the stars and stamps along the way. Which made things easier in the end. I missed a lot of the flag poles, but to begin with I didn't realize I needed them until later. I was able to go back and quickly speed run the levels, keeping a cat suit on hand through most of them. If I wasn't able to reach the flag by the standard means, I would just put on the cat suit (which for those who are not aware is a guaranteed top of the flag pole capture regardless of where you hit it.)

SMASH HYPE TRAIN HAS LEFT THE STATION WOO WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

WiiU Smash, Winter 2014

3DS Smash, Summer 2014

Charizard and Greninja introduced as new characters, and Zero Suit Samus/Sheik are now their own characters as opposed to alt-modes.

Megaman's Ultra Smash summons ALL THE MEGAMANS. It's glorious.

Mega-evo modes for Charizard/Lucario.

Fully online multiplayer for both versions, two different modes. For Fun, all but Final Destination level, any items, etc. For Glory, Final Destination only (but all levels have a FD version for visual variety), no items, etc.

More news on the way, no eta on when, though. Alt movesets for Friend/Single player, 3DS/WiiU interaction between games, among other things.
