[TV] The Doctor Who Thread

I get the feeling they're going for a 3rd Doctor vibe, similar to Tennant having a Peter Davidson vibe and Smith having a Tom Baker vibe at points.

I like the outfit, but maybe it's just me but it feels kind of...plain. Guess I'm used to bright blue 3-piece suits, bowties, and fezzes.
That seems to be what they're going for. Capaldi has said as much, saying, "Simple, stark, and back to basics".

Two quotes from the press release.

Peter Capaldi: "He’s woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100 per cent Rebel Time Lord."

Steven Moffat: "New Doctor, new era, and of course new clothes. Monsters of the universe, the vacation is over – Capaldi is suited and booted and coming to get you!"

This is a fun little article: what actors would play the 12 different Doctors if the show had been American, rather than British?

Honestly? I would've been totally okay with all of these picks. Except #9. Because NO.

So if one of you guys manages to figure a way to jump around to alternate timelines, do me a favour and pick up whatever DVDs are from this particular reality, eh? Thanks, you're a peach.

Nathan Fillion can be Jack Harkness. NPH can be Rory.
But Jack was already played by an American!

Yes, I know John Barrowman was born in Scotland, but he moved to the US as a kid and is an American Citizen, so damnit we claim him!

Cage would have worked just as well as the british guy did. A lot of people rag on him, but I have no particular problem beyond the usual "plays the same character in every movie" thing that LOTS of actors have nowadays.

The best two picks on there IMO were Gene Wilder (he'd have been awesome) and Harrison Ford.

...Is it just me, or could this be a potential tease of Davros? While there is a definitely Dalek-y sound to the voice, it feels more individual than the standard Dalek voice.
Some people are theorizing the Dalek Time Controller. I don't know who that is since I'm a newer fan (since Eccelston).

Essentially, Davros was a Kelad scientist who became the creator of the Daleks.

EDIT: Also, the Dalek Time Controller was a far-future Dalek who had an evolved mind that allowed him to perceive time on a greater level than other Daleks. As such, he served as a tactician for the Daleks for missions that involve time travel. He tends to be more present in novels and audio plays rather than the TV show proper.

And there's a fairly high quality porn parody that was just released. I am actually a lot more likely to watch that than the new season of the actual show at this point.

So, the new episode wasn't really all that exciting. A few good parts, but felt like a filler episode. I really hope it picks up as the series goes on. One thing, however...

Was that the Rani at the end there?

I was wondering the same thing.

I didn't think it was that bad. The thing is, Capaldi is such a wildly different kind of Doctor from Smith or Tennant. He's closer in line with Eccelston, but even then, he's more serious. He's much more old school Doctor, similar in many ways to Jon Pertwee (Third Doctor). You would never have seen Smith, Tennant, or Eccelston sit down with a scotch in order to negotiate with his enemy. He's an older, more refined kind of Doctor and to be honest, I think it's refreshing. And I say that even though Smith was by far my favourite Doctor.

I really liked the bit where he questioned where the new face comes from. I hope they explore it further.

Anyone notice Missy's garden looked an awful lot like a Tardis layout?

But yeah, it felt like it wasn't just Capaldi trying to find his feet with this episode. I think Moffat and the crew are also treading on unfamiliar ground here with a very different kind of Doctor. Even the musical score was much more subdued. I'll still watch because it's still Doctor Who, but for the moment, I'm hesitant. Curious, but hesitant. I like what they're trying with Capaldi, but I'm wondering how long it'll take for them all to settle into the right feel.

It wasn't a bad episode. Madame Vastra and company are always a welcome addition. And Clara was arguably better here than she ever was. But a lot of this episode felt...awkward. It's not out-of-the-gate fantastic like Tennant or Smith's debuts. But then, I didn't like Smith at first and he warmed up to me. I'm willing to give Capaldi the chance.

They spent a lot of time being critical of Clara. Since the companion is meant to be us, it sounded like they needed to keep saying "Look, he's older and less energetic. He's not as young and cute as the last ones, so stop fawning and writing fanfic (with young muscular men doing sport). He's not meant to be your fake boyfriend." A big early portion of the episode had the Doctor off doing his own thing and Clara wondering when he'll be back or will he ever come back (her eleven?). They even had to hit Clara/you in the head with a old-timey newspaper to get the message across.
