[TV] The What Anime Are You Watching Thread!

That's generally what happens when one watches the sub first, I find. Back in the day, my biggest disappointment of this nature was, having watched Love Hina as a sub... finally seeing it come out as a dub, and hating the voices.
Fairy Tail! Aussie and I watched the whole thing (what there is of it) subbed. We decided to watch it dubbed just because. We couldn't get through the first episode! The voices were all wrong! I feel the same way about Bleach and a few others I've only watched subbed. I have two Japanese friends here who think it's funny that I don't know enough of the language to leave the subtitles off, but I can't stand to hear the anime in American English.
That said, I did see a little clip of Shingeki no Kyojin in English. It was just Levi, Hange, and Petra, but I thought the voices were ok. I still have my reservations since they didn't announce Eren, Mikasa, or Armin. I'm afraid those will be the ones I hate.

I'll try to find the Levi clip; I watched one of Jean and Connie and it was wretched.[DOUBLEPOST=1394679428,1394678993][/DOUBLEPOST]I don't have a problem with the voices exactly (except Jean) so much as what they're saying. Whoever did the dub script seemed to go "Needs quipping! MORE quipping! Doesn't have to be clever or well-written or anything, just quip, quip, QUIP!" as if Jean, Hanji, and Levi all need to act like fucking Spider-man just because they sling around.

The clever quips are reason enough for me to stick with subs, really. The one voice I'm worried about most is Armin. I can just see him turned into Luffy for some reason.

check out the new ToraDora dub trailer they just released, I don't know what to say...
I'm actually impressed at how similar some of the voices are. I've lost count of how many times I've seen Toradora, though, and nothing but the sub would sound right to me at this point. Still though, the English voicework doesn't sound too bad.

I am just shocked it happened, I'll probably order it after taxes. It also forces me to buy blu-ray software finally so I can get that sweet sweet HD.

Agreed, show was six freakin' years ago. Usually if you wait that long they just aren't gonna dub it, but its here so whatevs!

If only they were at all clever. Or funny. The show is sometimes funnier than it has any right to be considering their circumstances, but the writing for the dub sounds atrocious. And I have a feeling they're going to stuff that crap in every chance they get to offset the grim story.

After a little browsing on /a/, apparently the reason this Toradora dub is a big deal is the distribution company hasn't ever done a dub before, they'd always limited it to subbed shows. On top of that, I'd say as far as rom-com goes TD is one of the most well-known and watched series within a majority of anime circles.

oh I know CK, all the more why I am shocked that they would pull this! I really hope it leads them to do it with more titles that have sold well. I like dubs even if they are dumb or different from the original Japanese.

Mikasa is being voiced by the same person who was Lan Fan in FMA:Brotherhood and Mizune in Soul Eater. Haven't found the clip of that yet.

If they do shove the corny one-liners in every chance they get it will ruin the show. The humor, and the tone used, in the original version is dark and more like a way to lighten up the situation so the characters wouldn't seem inhuman. The feeling I got from the clip yesterday was more like "YAY this is fun!!"

Outside of the food jokes early on with Sasha, AoT is definitely not a comedy. Shit gets dark, and man it stays dark.
There's still occasional humorous dialogue. Even when they were in the miserable situation in Trost when they had to get the supplies from the room full of titans, there was still Reiner telling Connie to try shoving a sword up a titan's ass as their other weak point, and someone warning him those might be his last words ... which now that I think about it, is more sad than funny, but in the scene it's the kind of thing you laugh at knowing they might all be going to their deaths.

But there aren't cheesy one-liners and stupid shit. Some of the stuff that is funny is really only funny because everything around it is so dark, but it works.[DOUBLEPOST=1394765057,1394764806][/DOUBLEPOST]

Exactly. The last time it was fun was when the squad was training, pre-Trost, and Connie, Sasha, the others were zipping around on the 3D maneuver gear fighting wooden titans as the final part of their assessment.

Levi, Hanji--they know better. Hanji has an eccentric approach, but she's not gleeful about killing titans. They got her all wrong. Levi's been traumatized from losing people and has shut down in a lot of ways. There's no way to make killing titans enjoyable to him.

Mikasa clip:

Fucking awful. The quavering voice doesn't even match the animation or facial expressions. There's an obvious dead look in her eyes--did they even show the images to the voice acting director?

Ugh. I just watched the one with Jean, Sasha, and Connie, too. Aussie watched with me. He agrees it's too goofy (and he thinks Levi's voice is all wrong).

They revealed Armin today. Ugh.
:puke:
Before even getting to Armin, I was groaning over Jean. "Courtesy of the army--we're all gonna die, yeah, coooool attitude." What the fuck. They just crashed through the windows after almost getting killed. The resupply people just watched a guy methodically prepare a rifle just to stick it in his mouth and pull the trigger.

Armin's voice is all over the place. In a single sentence it floats between genders, ages, and tone. Seriously, did George Lucas direct the voice acting? No one seems to know what they're supposed to be doing.

Argh.

Reiner sounds like a thug henchmen.

Marco's lines belong in a Pokemon episode.

I usually tell the comic book uber fans to get over it when they rage because things aren't exactly canon in the movie versions. I guess I can join the ranks of anime fans who cry about shitty dubs. That makes me even more irritated.

It's only an issue if you're in the "all dubs are shit" group. There are good dubs. Attack on Titan deserves a good dub. This is garbage. It's insulting in terms of the atmosphere of the story and it's disgusting in its treatment of some of the characters.

And I know I don't have to watch it, and I'm not going to. The sub isn't going to vanish or anything. My problem is that if I had seen the dub first, I'd have never watched the show, and though Attack on Titan is pretty popular, there are people whose first exposure will be this shitty dub and that'll end up being their only exposure when they don't bother with the show any further.

sometimes the English dub of a show is completely different and it works, like Desert Punk. Other times something just doesn't click together, I don't think for a moment that Funimation's intention is "hey guys lets make a complete shit dub", someone screwed the pooch, but we will never know which ADR director/producer it was that was responsible. I want to be honest, 90% of what Funimation has dubbed I have loved, but occasionally something just doesn't work out. Funimation has some of the best ADR people in the industry working for them, people who have helped with many shows and movies of all varieties. I almost want to cry that they are screwing up the show of the year for the fans.

I heard it was meh. I watched the first couple episodes and didnt continue it. Im with yoshi it needed something else.

Well, from what I understand, Japanese television (at least anime-wise) doesn't work that way. Anime companies generally have to pay the networks to get their shows aired, and if it didn't get another season, they probably didn't make enough off of merch to warrant it.

I didn't know about paying the networks, but I knew merch/video sales seem to affect the chance of multiple seasons. Battle shounen series seem to be the only exception from this, as they always seem to run 50+ episodes. Rarely comedies do too, like Gintama or Sket Dance.

Regardless, though, a lot of series will end with a cliffhanger or To Be Continued, regardless of a multi-season greenlight. Worst case scenario you get a company like Gainax who just lives to mess with the audience (see the ending of TTGL, Medaka Box s2 or Panty and Stocking, for example).

I am trying to decide what to watch next off my pile, if I posted a list of what I have would you guys suggest what to watch next?

let's see...

-You're under arrest seasons 2 and 3
-Clannad+Afterstory
-Tsubasa Chronicles season 2
-Shakugan no shana season 2
-Guilty Crown
-Ikki Tousen Season 1
-Inuyasha season 4-7
thats all the complete stuff I own atm I havent watched.

-You're under arrest seasons 2 and 3 - Never seen it, can't say anything about it.

-Clannad+Afterstory - Really good stuff, though be prepared to sob like a bitch. Constantly.

-Tsubasa Chronicles season 2 - Haven't seen it.

-Shakugan no shana season 2 - I liked seasons 1 and 2 of this, I haven't seen them in awhile though. There's also a 3rd season that aired recently.

-Guilty Crown - Didn't watch more than like 3 episodes while it was airing. Some people claim it's the new Code Geass s1, but I didn't much care for it.

-Ikki Tousen Season 1 - Ecchi stuff, I've seen a couple episodes. Seems entertaining, can't say much else.

-Inuyasha season 4-7 - Never cared for this show. More of a Ranma fan.

So out of what you've got, I'd say Clannad or Shana, depending on what you're in the mood for.

my birthday is next week, the week after Ranma 1/2 Blu-ray edition fo season 1 comes out, I dont think I can say no...

If you're interested at all in the business side of anime, I recommend listening to the ANNCast from animenewsnetwork.com. That's not their main focus, but it understandably comes up pretty often. I haven't listened in awhile, but there's lots of interesting stuff in the archives.

-edit-

Whoops, that was in response to CK, didn't see everything that came after.

Yeah most of what I know I glean from /a/ and the conversations there about presales on BluRays, merch and such, which seem to heavily affect chances of multiple seasons.
