Video Game News and Miscellany

Super Smash Bros-focused Nintendo Direct on Wednesday.

If they're going to center it on that game, they'd better have a release date; maybe even a confirmed title.

I'm hoping for a new contender and release date at least. My WiiU's been gathering a lot of dust lately, I really need something new to play.

You can play Gameboy Advance games.

(Seriously, Nintendo, what the hell?)
Yeaaaaaah, I mean it's cool that maybe you can get some of the harder-to-find games eventually, but really there's nothing coming out/already out that I'm interested in save for DKCR 2 (want to finish the first one first) and Mario Kart 8 next month. I'm feeling like Smash won't land till autumn at this rate.

I'm on the same page with you as far as Tropical Freeze. I don't have a need for it while I'm playing DKCR3D right now. Not even sure we'll be getting Mario Kart 8 right away unless one player can use the TV and the other can use the gamepad. Mario Kart 7 has spoiled us with having our own screens and going back to the split sounds annoying. We put up with it for Double Dash though, so maybe we'll put up with it for Mario Kart 8.

We'll be lucky to get Smash before Christmas. Though for Nintendo, an autumn release sounds about right. I think this will be the first year since 2008 without a main series Pokemon release. Of course, sometimes they don't seem to like announcing games until a few months before they're out, so really the latter half of this year remains a mystery. IIRC this time last year we didn't even know we'd be getting a new Zelda game by year's end.

I don't mind the split, but that's thanks to the system being on a larger TV.

I think you're right, though, for whatever reason Nintendo's just been so slow with their big-names that aren't Mario, and I think it's really what hurt WiiU sales the most (that and the stupid fucking idea to use the word "upgrade" in their slogan).

Just finished the Super Smash Bros Nintendo Direct. News bits:

- 3DS version coming in summer, Wii U version in winter
- Both versions will feature online play
- Two modes of online battling with strangers, For Fun which is anything, For Glory for the Final Destination junkies
- Every level will have a Final Destination version
- Leaderboards
- Moderators (meaning reporting abuse, oh boy)
- Transforming characters are now separate characters, so Zero Suit Samus and Sheik are now their own independent fighters
- NEW FIGHTER: Charizard
- NEW FIGHTER: Greninja
- Yoshi is back and he no longer walks like a dinosaur (this is a big deal for some reason?)

I'm happy the version I planned to buy is coming out first, but I have to question the wisdom of delaying the Wii U release by several months.

Megaman's Smash makes me so Goddamned happy.[DOUBLEPOST=1397000638,1397000208][/DOUBLEPOST]I just love that after years upon years of neglect, Capcom is getting their nose rubbed in all the love Nintendo is showing the guy in this game.

Hell, Yellow Devil stage hazard AND an Elec Man assist trophy on top of all that, too.

That's what bugs me about it. But I no longer care, I'm getting Mighty Number 9 now, so Capcom can eat 12 uncooked blue whale dicks.

Capcom won't be mismanaged forever... ether the old guard execs are going to get the boot or the company will fold. Once that happens, expect all the god damn Megaman you can handle.

EDIT: Also, HOLY HELL. We're getting Charizard AND Greninja as playable characters? That's pretty awesome.

I never played a Megaman game, but at this point I'm not going to bother. Mighty No. 9 it is.

But I will play the hell out of Smash Bros.

Regardless of Capcom's current practices, almost every Megaman game is worth playing. The only mediocre ones are MM7 and 8, and the last couple MMX games. If nothing else, see if you can find the MM and MMX collections, I snagged them from Amazon pretty cheap.

Capcom still gets money for them though. Maybe if I find them used.

The Nintendo Direct had some cool info, but a lot of the good stuff was just shown in a series of quick edits, so I've forgotten a lot of it. Mario wielding the oscillating fire, Animal Crossing villager building a house around an opponent--there was a stack of good stuff in that video.

If you have a Wii U, they do have some of the Mega Man and Mega Man X games available in the eShop. My personal recommendation is to try Mega Man 2 and Mega Man X.

Same problem as above--Capcom getting money for a franchise they've abandoned.

I know there are enough Pokemon already in the new Smash Bros., but I'm really hoping for Jigglypuff to make a return. It had a unique moveset and I enjoyed spinning all over the map with it.

I'm also wondering, with DeDeDe's minion being changed to Gordo instead of Waddle Dee, will we see the Bandana WD as an Assist/playable? That would be neat.

At this point, I just want something that's not a Pokemon. I'd love to see Ganondorf make a return, and if Shulk gets in I will explode with hype.

Also, with Bamco doing the dev work, I'm surprised to see no real sign of their franchises yet. Lloyd would be fucking amazing.

I'd like you all to appreciate this image.

Specifically, I hope you all appreciate the fact that Nintendo is showing Mega Man more love in one game that Capcom has for years.

Can't wait for Smash Bros. for more Mega Man action and for Mighty No.9, the spiritual successor to Mega Man.

What was the deal with old overweight megaman in street fighter x tekken?
The look was based upon the atrocious box art of the first Mega Man game.

Also of note is the non-too-subtle jab at Mega Man fans with the character in Street Fighter x Tekken. At one point he says, "I could do that again! Not three times, though. Nobody wants the third of something with ol' Mega Man.", which references how Capcom cancelled Mega Man legends 3 due to a perceived lack of fan support for it (even though the fans were all for the game and liking what there was).http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Vaporware

... all of which was basically just a smoke screen to destroy the franchise after Inafune left. The Capcom execs are old school Japanese corporate types... which basically means they saw him as a vassal and thought that he owed them for all of his successes. So when he jumped ship to work on his projects, despite making it clear he'd be happy to work with Capcom on stuff, they took it personally and have basically spent the better part of 2-3 years trying to make everyone forget about him.

It won't last. Sooner or later the board will retire or get kicked out when the company is in serious trouble. Once that happens, you're going to get all of the Mega Man you can stand.

It's too bad Nintendo couldn't just buy the rights to Mega Man and invite Inafune to work with them. I mean, hell, aside from the name brand, that's basically what they're doing with Mighty No. 9 by putting it on their Wii U.

Exactly. By the way, the composer for Mega Man 2 is also going to do the music for Mighty No. 9.

Capcoms been like one big failure of a game from being in serious trouble for years.[DOUBLEPOST=1397070526,1397070492][/DOUBLEPOST]

I'm happy they're not, I like it coming out on PC.

I used to fucking love Capcom, too. There were a few years where they could do nothing wrong in my eyes and I would buy every game. It's just gone to such shit over the last ~10 years.

Yeah, between Mega Man, Ducktales, Rescue Rangers, and few others during that era, I was such a Capcom fan boy. Now look at them.

Resident Evil used to be the shit, too. The last decent one was 5, and that was just "meh" for me. It had a lot of issues, which I could directly tie to how out-of-touch Capcom is.

Resident Evil 4 was downright spectacular, but a very different direction for the series.

5 was kind of meh, and 6 was just plain awful.

My favorite memory of the RE series is with RE4. My dad was playing it not long after my brother had finished it, and made it about halfway through the game before my brother walks in one day mid-game session.

My dad: "Dude what's up with these zombies, I can't ever seem to get away without getting hit once or twice."

My brother watches for a minute.

"Why aren't you running?"

"...I can fucking run?"

He sprints away from the zombies.

"Oh. Well Goddamnit."

Capcom and Square used to be game companies I just assumed I'd always buy their games site unseen, without discussion. Oh how times change.
