Video Game News and Miscellany

I no longer have an SNES, so that's not gonna do me much good. But this one is fun and I'm good with it.

It's a shame some games haven't come to the Wii or Wii U VC. I really wanted to play Illusions of Gaia.
There's always emulation. Also if you end up enjoying Illusion of Gaia, I'd recommend SoulBlazer.

If you want that style of game, with the addition of how-the-fuck-do-you-do-this puzzles, BrainLord is also interesting.

Didn't someone recreate the SNES game with the current Shadowrun's modding community or something? Or maybe they were just working on it.
I know someone is working on it, but I don't know how far along it is. Really though... the SNES game isn't SUPER COMPLEX. You could beat it in an afternoon if you really wanted to. I'm surprised it's not done.

Some of you may recall I don't have a lot of respect for the needs and wishes of the gamer demographic, I find many to be petulant brats.

With that in mind I just saw that the head of EA just put out another inflammatory statement along the lines of "gamers don't know what they need so we'll give them what we want". Of course t wasn't that harsh but that was the gist if it.

I finally realized how I see the relationship between gamers and EA:

"Lacey Jonas is meant to be a successful rom-com starlet and therefore clearly not Lindsey Lohan"

All that needs is a sound bite of three finger snaps.

He and Tigole (Jeff Kaplan) were also the GM's of one of the most successful EverQuest guilds, and Blizz hired both to work on WoW. I remember, at least in my EQ days, that it was pretty huge news they'd been hired. As for the reason behind his departure and what it's going to mean for the upcoming WoW xpac, I can't say, though.

Nintendo is taking over all Monster Hunter 4 distribution, marketing, sales records, etc. for Europe.

I'm curious if this is a matter of testing the waters in terms of taking over any properties from Capcom.

On the "not sure if want" front, Mighty No. 9 is opening up a new round of funding for bonus features and content.

While this is cool and will let me contribute as well, I'm worried that adding more stuff will delay a game that already has a large number of stretch goals. And these aren't just extra New Game + types of features; they're the kind that would be in the game from the start, like English voice acting. A delay for more guff seems unnecessary.

Apparently there's also going to be an animated series.

I think the big problem is that they put the stretch goals in a haphazard order. English voice acting should have been an early one, not one that was missed.

I'm sure the English acting is an add-on that's tied to the game getting a series, as in it wouldn't be there if there wasn't a show in development.

True; but they might have wanted it so that every console/system could get it to increase potential customers--not like that's really an issue for them with the kind of support they're getting.

Pre-order reward is apparently only for PC version through Humble Bunde, so while I may donate a little, it won't be towards any specific rewards since I plan to get this on 3DS when it comes out. Hopefully it will release on all its systems at the same time like Shovel Knight.

So someone cut together a trailer for Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater in the style of the one for Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. It's... amazing.

New version of Dwarf Fortress released a couple of days ago.

Highlights include:

  • The world actually changes during gameplay now, instead of only being altered during worldgen and then remaining static during gameplay.
  • Big update to plants. Trees now occupy multiple tiles, depending on their size, and there are a bunch of new flowers and fruits.
  • Expanded movement. Climbing, jumping, sprinting, etc.
  • Stealth has been overhauled, for both Fortress Mode and Adventurer Mode.
  • Other Adventurer Mode tweaks, such as expanded conversations, rumors, combat moves take time, etc.
And a bunch of other stuff.

I'm not diving in yet though, since generally speaking the releases of major updates like this one usually come with a bunch of bugs. So I'm going to wait a month or two for a more stable version to come out, before downloading and installing.

It looks like one of the things they'll be doing with the new Smash Bros. game is having alternate costumes that reference different variations of characters. They've already confirmed a Skyward Sword costume for Link and a pink tracksuit costume for Little Mac, but here we have two more: a Light Suit for Samus Aran and a USA outfit for Mario (with that outfit coming from the cover art for NES Open Tournament Golf).
