The Zoe Quinn sex-for-reviews scandal

Even though I don't agree with all of Anita's points - like the hyperbole that Null mentions - I'm at least glad her critiques are opening more discussion on the issue. I think it has at least opened some eyes. Which was her entire point. She never intended to destroy games, just critique them.

Also "Gamer agate," which is probably the name for the solidified mass that accumulates inside controllers.

Which is completely different from Gamera Gate, which as you all know, was the scandal when pictures surfaced of exactly how the fire breathing turtle was a "friend to all children".

GameInformer came in the mail today and their interview this month was with Anita Sarkeesian. Everything she says in it, I can get behind. The interview doesn't have the hyperbole or bad examples of at least the video I watched (and what I've heard about the others) and I agree with everything she says.

... you still get MAGAZINES in the MAIL?!

About video games makes it even more egregious.
I like getting the physical magazine.

Problem is, most of the time, the month's issue is reviewing things very late. This month's seemed to be mostly up-to-date, but I remember receiving ones that were reviewing two-month-old games by the time I got the magazine. In any case, previews are still good.

So earlier today Felicia Day posted something about Gamer Gate. http://thisfeliciaday.tumblr.com/post/100700417809/the-only-thing-i-have-to-say-about-gamer-gate

She was doxxed in less than an hour after posting, with her home address added in the comments.

I don't care about the stupid allegations about journalism and ethics anymore. It is, as far as I can see, a campaign of harassment that has gone far beyond any possible justification and is now just a self-directed engine of hate.

?

She's not as popular as internet culture thinks. She was on an episode of House 5-6 years ago? I vaguely think she guest starred on one of the really bad shows on CW or SyFy that get lower ratings than Big Bang Theory reruns. I'm really not sure what I said to deserve that.

I didn't know the ratings of the Big Bang Theory was the measure of how much someone can be a celebrity. That's not really how it works. Hell, you can be in ZERO movies and still be a celebrity, because the definition of a celebrity it someone that is just very well known. Fame can be gained through a lot of avenues, and Felicia Day gained her mostly through the internet.

Other examples of bona fide Internet celebrities who were more or less unknown outside of it.
-Gary Brolsma
-Antoine Dodson
-Kimberly Wilkins
-Ted Williams
-Laina Morris
-Kevin Stewart
-Tom Dickson
...and many mooooore.

She has a recurring role on Supernatural. It's in it's 9th season, and last season averaged 2.5 million viewers. That doesn't seem insignificant to me.

Also, fuck you for saying that Eureka was a bad show.

Felicia Day is actually pretty prolific... 5 episodes of Supernatural (and she almost got a spin-off), the last season of Buffy, the last two seasons of Eureka, at least 1 SyFy movie... that's not even getting into her voice work, which includes big video game releases like Dragon Age and Fallout, as well as TV shows like Fishhooks and Annoying Orange... or who numerous net projects like Geek and Sundry, Dr. Horrible, Legend of Neil, or The Guild (which got major push by Microsoft and Sprint).

So... yeah. Felecia is a celebrity. Maybe not A-List, but she's earned her chops.

I know you guys are doing your normal jump on Charlie thing, but to be fair, she's still a pretty niche nerd celebrity.

I'm pretty sure most people have no idea who she is.
So? Fame is relative. Most people probably don't know who Paul Levesque is, either, but that doesn't mean he's not a celebrity with huge appeal to his audience.[DOUBLEPOST=1414061040,1414060695][/DOUBLEPOST]

And that changes her connections in the industry and the weight that will carry with law enforcement compared to the names previously attached to Gamergate? You can argue that she's not enough of a celebrity for it to matter, but you can't change that her name is directly connected to a lot of even more famous people. She is a minor celebrity, but she's still worked with Joss Whedon, Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion, etc. Can any other person who has been harassed because of Gamergate claim such connections?

I have no idea who that is.

I'm not saying her problem is irrelevant, but she's better known than Sarkeesian. People spend so much time immersed in geek culture that they don't realize how little of it seeps out into the rest of the world. I have a large family, and they have many friends, and if I gathered the hundreds of them together and asked for a show of hands as to who has heard the name Felicia Day, I'd get zero hands up.

Of course, the same would happen if I swap Felicia Day for GamerGate; no one knows what the hell that is either.

My comment's point is, the police took Sarkeesian seriously, would take Day seriously, because they're people who are being harassed, not as a matter of celebrity status. Celebrities get shit every day from journalists, paparrazzi, etc., but it doesn't give them special status. The law enforcement benefit to being a celebrity seems to be what you can get away with, but not as a shield to what's done to you.

That's only going to matter if she starts calling in favors.

If I had to guess, I'd say it's because you seem more interested in busting on someone than expressing sympathy about how they had their privacy violated while supporting an issue that you also support.

Extremely offensive joke about GamerGate
Two gamergaters are walking down the street together. A woman crosses their path, and the first gamergater starts shouting at her, throwing rocks and shit at her until she screams and runs away. He shouts after her, "I know where you live! I'll hunt you down bitch!"

The second gamergater does, "Why did you do that?"

The first gamergater goes, "Because these uppity feminazi sluts want to ruin gaming for everyone, they have it coming."

the second gamergater goes, "Dude, that's not what we're about at all."

A second woman crosses their path. The second gamergater throws her to the ground, rapes her, kicks her head in, and sets her on fire.

The first gamergater goes, "Whoa, shit, why did you do that?"

The second gamergater goes, "Because I care deeply about the ethics of gaming journalism."
