Video Game News and Miscellany

Ah, that's right. It was in response to Night Trap and Mortal Kombat in 1994.
Mortal Kombat sounds believable; I was old enough then to be aware that my copy on Sega Genesis was the awesome bloody version, while my friend's on the SNES was the baby version, pre-Babality.

Indie game developer with a game on Steam acts like a complete dickbag on Twitter.

Has game removed as a result.

Just another example that freedom of speech does not equal freedom of consequence. I'm not even talking about the death threat, because the guy said plenty of stupid, unprofessional things before that. If they wanted it properly dealt with, they should have filed a proper complaint to or through Steam. The improper way would be acting like a spoiled tweener who isn't getting their way and bitching about it on social media for all to see.

You have it exactly right. This guy acted completely unprofessional, and having your game on steam isn't a right, it's a professional arrangement/partnership. If we had a client who went around saying how much we sucked and how much he wanted to kill our general manager, I'm sure we'd stop airing radio advertisements for them as well.

Looking into that news story a bit more, it looks like this dev had a partner, who was naturally distraught that their game got pulled. Tweets like this from https://twitter.com/Vallisca3x3x3 :

Make me feel bad for him. And then he follows up with this:

Whelp... sympathy gone.

Egoraptor has a new video out, in which he thinks he knows game design better than everyone else and explains why Ocarina of Time is actually terrible.

Yeah...

Haven't watched it since it came out, rewatching it now.

First off, you know the story of LoZ1 if you read the little prologue blurb before the File Select, so he's wrong about that.

I don't know that I'd call the world of LttP bigger, either, unless you count there being two worlds of the same size (but roughly the same layout).

Oh, he brought up the "no explanation/goal" thing again, even though there is one. He's the same way on Game Grumps, he skips any kind of expository/instructional dialogue because he's impatient, but then laments the fact that he doesn't know what to do/what's going on and that there's no direction. He's a huge hypocrite.

Bats were never fun, that's a terrible thing to say.

I should point out I'm only like 8 minutes into this. Editing more later.

I can't say I disagree with him about a lot of that video though. I'm one of those odd people that never liked the N64 Zelda games.

Okay I agree on the waiting thing, that was always annoying and carried over into other games, too (even Hyrule Warriors).

The whole "find the button" thing isn't great either, again I agree. Games like Lufia/Lufia II did puzzles to open doors better than most RPGs. Both definitely are filled with the frustration/A-HA moments he's talking about. Don't think I'd call "kill X enemies" engaging, though.

Okay he's wrong and weirdly focused on a lot of shit, so I think I'm done nitpicking.

His Mega Man one was really good, he should stick to Mega Man.

In no way am I saying everyone needs to like OoT, I just think the reasons he gives are... self conflicting. He says having gaps you have to hold the stick up to jump over adds nothing to gameplay and should just be a straight line, and that waiting for an animation to play while opening a big chest is bad, and then talks about how great it is to have to backtrack through a level in Link to the Past in order to open a chest you got the key for because it 'adds suspense'

I still remember the box puzzle in the Lighthouse in Lufia 2, where the game doesn't give you enough boxes to solve the problem, so you're supposed to cheat and use one to hold the doors open so they can't close. It was... ingenious.

Lufia II's puzzles were all awesome. Some were frustrating, most required some trial and error, but man figuring them out and moving to the next room in the dungeon was (and still is) one of the most satisfying feelings I've ever gotten from a JRPG.

The Treasure Sword shrine ones can eat a dick though. Easily the hardest in the game, by far.

Gah, the CD Collector's edition removed 90% of the soul from the game by foregoing IMUSE context-specific midi audio for looping redbook CD audio.

Im still going to buy it anyhow.
Reading deeper into it, they might actually be offering BOTH versions. I'll be watching closely. If they offer the IMUSE engine versions, I'll be snagging them myself. I bought every one of those, and all the expansions (it was a lot of freaking floppy disks let me tell you) back in the day.

It also took YEARS to complete it's story.

Welp, they just went up on GoG. As well as a few other LucasArts games, including:

-Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (eh, already have it on Steam)
-Indiana Jones & the Fate of Atlantis (ditto)
-Secret of Monkey Island (also ditto)

And...and.....AND...

-SAM & MAX HIT THE ROAD!!!

I still have my copy, in its DVD case.

Nintendo's president has returned from medical leave to find stocks are up, profits are booming, and the company as a whole has been doing great during his absence.

So what does he do? Decides that the U.S. and Europe shouldn't have the New 3DS released anytime soon because that will somehow help Nintendo make more money, by not selling its new hardware (and thus opening the gate for more software). No, instead he wants more people to buy the regular 3DS/XL in those regions, then be ready to upgrade whenever Nintendo releases the New 3DS. Never mind that most people who buy a 3DS now won't be buying the New 3DS when it comes out because that's ridiculous; they're going to sit pretty with their new hardware. Only jerks like me who've had these things awhile and are ready for an upgrade are going to replace it. On the other hand, if the New 3DS was released here in time for Christmas, that could be people's default, thus opening the door for the New 3DS-specific software that'll be coming next year.

If Nintendo's finances start to tank again now that he's back, I could see a leadership change by the end of 2015. I like Iwata on Nintendo Direct, but he's a better PR guy than decision-maker.

It's weird because he makes a terrible decision like that, but then also wants to do away with region locking, which is a great idea.

Nintendo confuses the hell out of me sometimes.
