Video Game News and Miscellany

From Kotaku: Shadows of Mordor Free DLC -If you feel like adding some estrogen to your orc-slaying experience, today is your lucky day—Warner Bros. just launched a free new DLC pack (for PS4/Xbox One/PC) that will let you replace boring ol' Talion with a lady whose full title must be spelled out every time she's mentioned: Lithariel, the Warrior Commander of the Tribesmen of Nurn.

So, in addition to making a better Assassin's Creed type game than Assassin's Creed Unity, Shadows of Mordor is letting you play as a female character, in a *free* DLC pack. I'm pretty sure they're just metaphorically giving Ubisoft the finger at this point.

I'm liking what I'm playing of Dragon Age Inquisition so far, but one thing bothers me very greatly. It doesn't seem to support alt-tab. It crashes every time I do. That's pretty unforgivable.

If you absolutely must alt-tab, see if you can switch it to windowed mode first (assuming it supports windowed mode).

Mine is fine with alt tabbing, but I had video card issues and frame rate issues that I had to google to fix.

Yeah, bunch of people on metacritic complaining of low framrates on PC and stuttering. Kinda is making me hold off on it. Also saying the game is MMO-like.

I picked it up for half price.

*shrug*

I'll finally have a chance to play it tomorrow.

FPS Benchtest is 45 FPS on Medium. Fuck.

But I'm starting to get this on too many games.

Time to upgrade my box.

I was hanging out with my friend John last night, and his wife, Ruth, is neck-deep in Dragon Age Inquisition. Or as she called it: "Dragon Age - The Quest to Find the War Room". She came in to grab a sixer of cider and said she'd been looking around her castle for the last 6 hours and couldn't fucking find it.

My wife's pretty much given up on it. The font is too small to read without eye strain and apparently this isn't an uncommon problem for the console version. On top of that, it does kind of handle like an MMO. To put it in perspective, she got DA:I on Tuesday and Pokemon on Friday, and she's easily played five times as much Pokemon.

Bioware really wanted this to be their Skyrim and I don't think they understood what made Skyrim so beloved. But hey, they've got snow, dragons, and random-song bards, and every other NPC has a personality and history, and hey, check out that land. There sure is a lot of it. Too bad it's not a persistent world and will never feel as alive as Bioware wishes it did.

On that note, I did play Skyrim for three or so hours today. Still a terrific game, still finding new things despite having played hundreds of hours. I can't believe it's over three years old, still so wonderful. I left a sunken fortress, came over a cliffside while hearing a windy whistle, expecting to see a tunnel to lead from one side of the mountains and over to the Whiterun plains. Instead I somehow bypassed the tunnel and around an over-mountain stretch without realizing it, to come around a corner and view this:

As best as my phone-cam could capture on our TV the otherwise gorgeous view at sunset.

Depends what's on sale.

Last few times, I barely bought anything.

Same junk on sale all the time.

Those I want never go below 50% off.

I usually pick of 5 or 6 things every sale. We'll see how it goes. Maybe this time Rust will finally break the 10 dollar mark.

I know that feeling so well. Countless hours over the course of multiple playthroughs, but today for the first time I came across a woman living alone in the mountains, who challenged me to an archery contest and helped raise my archery level. At first I thought she was an NPC added by a mod, because I couldn't believe there was a vanilla NPC I hadn't come across yet. But nope, vanilla NPC.

And then I killed her and took her stuff, because this is Skyrim after all.

I was weirded out too when I found her as my Dragonborn character. I didn't kill her, because she was living off in the wild on her own and my character was the same and respected that ... but my new character Cheese Jarl would probably kill her for not having any cheese to offer. Of course, she also killed a guy's wife in Rorikstead to get the cheese in their house ... guy must've been loaded, because I've been having non-stop bounty hunters under his orders.

One game that looks very impressive that's currently in either Alpha or Beta testing is EVOLVE. Achievement Hunter did some Let's Plays of that. Looks like it's for 5 players - one is the Monster, and the rest are Hunters that are chasing it. The monster can kill and eat wildlife to evolve, gaining more potent powers, more health, etc. A level 1 monster is pretty squishy, but a level 3 monster will fuck you up BAD.

Everything I've seen and read about this game over the past year is the #1 reason I want a PS4 and the #1 reason I will be crying since I can't afford one.

Now they just need to add a third faction of sea witches.

Isn't it coming out for PC, too? I thought it was. Could be wrong.

EDIT: Yeah, just looked it up. It's coming for Windows, PS4, and Xbox One.

Apparently Shadow of Mordor for PS3/360 is a total piece of shit. Graphic problems, glitches, sound bugs; as if they purposely broke down some of the game to better emphasize the next-gen releases, and that must be the case because the PS3 can handle this kind of thing.

But worst, they've apparently gimped the Nemesis system in some regard. Monolith wasn't specific about how, but it's supposed to be simpler. The graphic problems and sound problems can be patched, but I don't see them fixing a system they purposely broke from its counterparts.

I'm really bummed about this. I was really looking forward to this game and apparently they shat all over it. Why even make a last-gen version then? Makes no fucking sense.

They've been saying for a long time before release that the 360/ps3 versions would have a much, much, much more limited nemesis system, because those systems didn't have the processing power needed to run them.

Non-New 3DS's (or old 3DS's if you like) have been discontinued in Japan, which seems really abrupt to me considering the upgrade came out just a couple months ago there. On the other hand, better to have people buy the new one if they're buying anything ... I guess?

I'm kind of glad Nintendo decided we don't need the New 3DS right now, because I'm starting to think I actually don't need it at all. They've already sped up the eshop's processing power on the old ones so downloads run fast, and the only reason I really needed the right analog for Monster Hunter was because of the underwater hunts, which have been removed for Monster Hunter 4.

So unless some must-have exclusive comes out, I think I'd rather save my money for whatever full next handheld Nintendo releases, which will probably suck and be hated for the first year, and then be amazing, like happened with the 3DS and Wii U.

It's getting Xenoblade Chronicles, which is pretty must buy for me.

There's a Dead Island MOBA now. I knew that was the latest trend, but I didn't expect Dead Island to be one of the properties turned into one.

Man, that came out like a year ago. Or at least open beta that was sent out to everyone did.

I still have a code for the game, never have claimed it, never have felt the need to punish someone else with it.

Yeah... it has a MOBA, some kind of weird mid-qual out now, and the sequel (Riptide is just being counted as an expansion of 1) which is coming out in a year or so. They've made it abundantly clear in what they put out that the next game is going to be more "fun" focused like Dead Rising than the first game.

A very well deserved award. I feel like Roberta Williams' contributions to video games has been forgotten by many over the years. She was undoubtedly a major reason for - at the very least - the PC games we play today.

Nintendo showed at the Game Awards a little bit more from the new Zelda and Miyamoto confirmed that Starfox coming next year.
