Movie News & Miscellany

...And on the latest bit of bad comic book movie news, Sony may be developing an Aunt May movie.

Sony: What more can we squeeze out of the only marvel franchise we own, and can use to ride the hype train with?

Hack Writers: I don't fucking know, we're already doing sinister six and... spider girls? Was that a real thing? Or did I hallucinate that? I'm so fucking high right now... about the only thing left is Aunt May, and no one would...

Sony: Perfect! I want it ready to release by Summer.

Holy shit, that's a bad idea. I mean, Aunt May is a font of aged wisdom for young Peter Parker, as well as a burden that complicates his life, and keeps him grounded. But she's a plot device, not a character in her own right. She has essentially no agenda of her own - she's long since retired and was widowed at the beginning of Spider-Man's career, so she's just kind of there. And she wasn't anything extraordinary in her time - Aunt May and Uncle Ben were simply good normal people who raised their orphan nephew and made sure he had a normal childhood. Which is great for Peter Parker - he's unlikely to think of himself as a 'god among insects' due to that upbringing. But to make a movie about Aunt May? There's nothing really there to make a movie about!

It's as bad an idea as making a TV show involving everyone from the Batman universe except Batman.

Man I hope they start fresh with him and ignore any reference to Wolverine: Origins.
"Oh hi! Some of you may remember me from that other movie you may have seen me in. Well, half of it, anyway. In the second half they replaced me with a double that didn't even look like me. Worst magic trick ever. Anyway, I'd like to ask you to ignore that other movie. Pretend it never existed. Wipe it from your mind, okay? Everyone done wiping? Good, let's get this show on the road!"

That should literally be the teaser.

Thanks to the success of the latest American Godzilla, Toho has deemed it time to take big G out of retirement (again) and will be producing a new Godzilla movie in 2015.

This feels kind of absurd, but I can't deny I'm excited.

They should really just bite the bullet and do Godzilla vs. Ultraman. If fucking Super Sentai and Kamen Rider can get along enough to do crossover episodes, there is no reason Capital G can't hang out with Ultraman.

Kamen Rider and Super Sentai are both Toei productions though. Ultraman and Godzilla are owned by two different companies (Tsuburaya and Toho respectively) even if they're both largely the results of special effects wizard Eji Tsubruraya. The closest you're going to get is below.

@Zero Esc wasn't this when they were planning on reviving the franchise anyway?

They said it wouldn't be for 10 years at least, and I'm sure I wasn't the only one who assumed the revival had already happened with the Godzilla that came out earlier this year. Had that movie not been a success, I don't think we'd be hearing these plans now. Toho knows how to crank out a movie in a short time period; I expect this thing will be in theaters in Japan before the end of 2015.

Tokusatsu takes next to no time to film. They can literally crank them out as fast as an episode of South Park, which is why they can get 40+ episodes of Super Sentai a year AND two movies. It'll be out pretty fast.

I'd go see live action Crazy Taxi. The plot would suck no doubt, but it'd be fun to watch the crashes.

Let's just hope they have more to the soundtrack than just "All I Want" by the Offspring.

"YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH"

Sony and Nintendo in talks for Sony to produce Mario Bros movie.

Oh boy.
...I...I don't know what to feel about that. On the one hand Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Hotel Transylvania, on the other hand the fact that its a video game movie and there seems to be a curse surrounding most of them. I'll just wait for the trailer to calm or excite my nerves.

I am legitimately surprised they didn't talk to Dreamworks first.

Apparently Sony's not doing so well, save for PlayStation, so honestly I figure they'll do whatever they can to make some money.
I'm not surprised... even cheap TVs and mp3 players are acceptably useful these days, so Sony can't sell on brand anymore. That said, Sony makes TONS of money selling insurance in Japan. It's not going anywhere any time soon.

I think part of the problem with adapting Super Mario Bros (both past and future attemps) is that the games don't really have much of a plot and none of the main characters have any identifiable characteristics outside of appearance.
