Movie News & Miscellany

Scottish is part of the subset of British. Scottish, English, Welsh and (controversially) Irish are all British subjects, as they're part of the "British Isles."
Which have been historically at odds with one another for centuries. The English don't generally enjoy being grouped together with those filthy animals.

Edit: Sorry, had multiple windows open and was still on my first coffee. I meant to post something else here.

Okay, so it seems there is something about the MCU that makes directors open their dumb fucking mouths and immediately come off as idiotic hypocrites.

You know, I like Peter Jackson's work. I really liked The Frighteners. I loved Lord of the Rings. I thought An Unexpected Journey was okay but could have used some restraint with the CGI. But when you've done six movies for more than billion dollars in development cost, grossing umpteen zillion dollars in profit, based off a licensed intellectual property, you don't get to say shit about blockbusters, franchises, and motherfucking Peter Jackson IN PARTICULAR doesn't get to say shit about the overuse of technology in movie making after the drunken green screen orgy that the Hobbit franchise is.

I don't buy that either. A lot of professionals in that industry have stated you won't be able to collect insurance on a film you voluntarily don't release.

Also I feel I should point out the plot of the producers was to oversell shares in the play (Ok, you own 40% thank you! Ok, you've bought 40%, thank you! Repeat 50x) and then make a show so bad nobody comes to see it and it makes no money, so there's no profits to distribute (or at least what little there is is so paltry you can pay out the 5000% you sold out of pocket without problem), and insurance didn't figure in it.

But I just like the Producers.

"Let us assume for a moment that you are a dishonest man."
"Assume away."[DOUBLEPOST=1419361955,1419361768][/DOUBLEPOST]Also, they're gonna release it after all.

One huge publicity stunt?

A loophole in german law allowed for something similar for awhile. See: Uwe Bol

Welp, I sure look forward to seeing ScarJo prancing around in this little number.

Or, if it's closer to the original movie, just stark frickin naked all the time.

Eh, who am I kidding. We'll be lucky if it's merely the season 2 catsuit.

But we can all hope the movie will still require mounting the control seat for a Tachikoma like a sport bike.

So who's gonna play Batou? Here's hoping Vin Diesel.

[DOUBLEPOST=1420502593,1420502407][/DOUBLEPOST]Also - just read the article, had to roll my eyes at the author moaning about Kusanagi not being played by an Asian actress. Name me a hollywood-grade asian actress who looks like Kusanagi and is a native english speaker (or at least has no detectable accent).

Why would the main character in Ghost in the Shell not be able to have an Asian accent? Did I miss some sort of plot critical point in the movie?

More importantly, name any anime character that actually looks Asian. The genre itself is already hilariously whitewashed when it comes to main and supporting characters. More often than not the only ones who look Japanese are the extremely old characters or the ones that are horrible caricature drawings (ugly/fat characters). The general style doesn't lend itself well to characters looking Asian unless it steps well into new territory in terms of aesthetic, and shows that do that tend to not sell well and don't see multiple seasons.

I would have said Rinko Kikuchi first, but you specified no detectable accents...

In which case, Lucy Liu and Maggie Q come to mind immediately.

That's because Hollywood doesn't cast asians in leading roles ever.
Yes they do. Lucy Liu alone disproves you several times over, and there'd be even more if I weren't assuming you implied the followup "excluding action films with martial arts."

Because it's an english (hollywood) production. Fluency is a dealbreaker.

EXACTLY. Great big disney eyes, creamy white skin and all. If they didn't want the Black Widow playing the Major, maybe they shouldn't made made her look Russian.

Quick: guess this person's ethnicity, pretending no knowledge of the source material!

The only time, it seems, that anime artists make characters distinctly asian is when they're supposed to be unattractive.

Not without some forcefeeding, working out, and "work done." Also, the face is all wrong.

and Maggie Q
Pssht, more like Maggie Who?

(google google)

Ah, ok, I didn't remember her from Divergent (I was unimpressed with the movie as a whole, just like the book)... but looking at pictures, same deal applies. Needs more meat, the girl is a stick. Maybe if you could put her head on ScarJo's body. Or put a lot of "Xena padding" in the Major's bodysuit.

Or, and this is totally thinking outside the box here, they could hire a NEW, unknown Asian actress who would be perfect for the role.

Because hiring a total unknown has never worked in the past. *coughSUPERMANcoughCHRISTOPHERREEVEcough*
Sure, so long as she's got the right features and frame, that'd be an option. But I guess they wanted someone with star power, and ScarJo's already got action-lady chops from her Marvel gigs.

How about Ming-na Wen?
Maybe, with the right makeup. Had to google her, too, though.

lol at trying to find an actress that looks like a cartoon.
Scarlett Johannson actually comes pretty close. Closer to Kusanagi than she actually did to looking like Natasha Romanoff's artwork, IMO.[DOUBLEPOST=1420511032,1420510550][/DOUBLEPOST]Tell me she doesn't look just as much like the top as the bottom, costume aside.

Of course, I guess you could say they are similar archetype characters.

Put her in a purple wig and she's practically there.

Dude, if you're playing the "must match the character exactly otherwise ScarJo" game, they might as well cast Kelly Hu, Jamie Chung, or Jessica Cambensy and call it a day.[DOUBLEPOST=1420511698,1420511632][/DOUBLEPOST]I still say Rinko Kikuchi, given my druthers, but I understand the accent concern.

I'm not saying "must match the character exactly," I'm saying the character looks more like like Scarlett Johansson than just about any asian woman in the business. Not just in the face and eyes, but also the weight, bone structure, and muscle mass.

All that, and ScarJo is a known quantity WITH star power. It's proven she can play the action role of a tough lady who can beat up anyone you can name, and tacking her name on the movie draws in more people than a little known or unknown actress who only gets the part because the source material comes from japan, despite it not looking japanese at all.

And I only said Vin Diesel for Batou because Sylvester Stallone is too old. And heck, they could get Jeremy Renner to play Pazu.

John Hamm (with beard) could make a convincing Ishikawa, imo.
