That's really stupid, since the characters literally said they weren't going to treat it as a big deal. Assuming that it would, in fact, be a big deal, is kind of missing the entire point.

XKCD, Skin-Horse,....Plenty of webcomics that have never been late. XKCD has missed, IIRC, one update in its run. Skin Horse has missed zero (though there was a few weeks of fill-in by another artist when she was, y'know, having a baby, but even that didn't stop the story from going forward).
This is why the RSS feed was invented. I don't go to 60 websites "checking" for updates, the updates come to me.

I don't have a list of bookmarks anywhere, I just keep 'em all in my head. When a comic doesn't update for a really, really long time, it literally gets forgotten and sloughs off my list.
That is good news for me, because either way I want to pursue this hobby whether it works or not. And I hardly tell my family of my occult hobbies, I ain't tellin' strangers.
My aunt's a nun, avoiding that conversation for as long as possible.
