I find the interesting thing about Claire is that her transgender status isn't her defining characteristic. It's mentioned once and doesn't get brought up again. The fact that Marten isn't phased by it makes it an unusual storyline, but a positive one. And while he comes off as smooth by comparison to Claire's complete lack of experience, his previous relationship with Dora was almost Holden-like to her Alyssa: she was more worldly and experienced, he didn't know how he got there.
I always found QC to have a slower pace, occasionally punctuated by robotic shenanigans and Pizza Girl, but otherwise fairly rooted in reality. It might seem like Jeph is trying to juggle a much larger cast than he planned, but I don't think it's that uneven. I'm also not as deeply invested in the relationships as I am in some other comics, so moving through the cast frequently doesn't bother me.
