[Gaming] Board Game Praise

Last Night on Earth was ok, I thought. I felt Zombicide was more kinetic and involved a whole lot more action. If I'm playing a zombie game, though, I'm playing Dead of Winter from Plaid Hat Games.

Putting together the AT-ST, trimming all the flash from the model. These are serious models, not the typical plastic toys you'll find in most games. $65 was a freacking STEAL for this, and apparently FFG figured it out and upped the price a little. The detail is fantastic, and tackling these should not be done by a novice to miniatures.

I was just thinking, it might be neat to share our collections. Currently, I have...

My wife got Mansions of Madness for Christmas. After an hour of reading, a video, some more reading, putting pieces together, sorting cards, and a little more study, we were able to get a game started. Getting ready for it was pretty much what I did with my afternoon and evening.

And despite all that set-up work, it was a lot of fun! It's hard for just two people, since one has to play the antagonist of the game, thus the clock was really my wife's biggest opponent. She won though. We needed to look up rules now and then, but now that we have a stronger understanding of the game, it's not so rough to get going. We need to get more people for it though.

Cool Stuff Inc. has some excellent games on sale right now, and the discounts are nothing to sneeze at. You can't beat Among The Stars at $20. Caverna is $61. Hyperborea is $60. Merchants and Maruaders is $40. Star Trek Attack Wing expansions are almost all half off. Through The Ages is $37. All excellent games.

Wow... got several games for gifts.

Betrayal at Hill House
Pandemic
Forbidden Island
Pathfinder: Rise of the Runelords

Time to get reading and get the game group together. :)
Betrayal at Hill House (did they change it from Betrayal at House on Haunted Hill?) is the kind of game that destroys friendships. I love it so.

Wife was feeling down tonight (I can understand--going back to work after a break feels off) and instead of asking what she wanted to do like I usually do, I suggested we whip out Forbidden Island to end the weekend.

It was an example of how perfect this game is--we barely had to glance at the rules, even though it's been six months since we played. It all just snaps together right there in setup. And though I was convinced we were fucked, the cards went lucky for us and we won. Took about a half-hour and turned her mood around entirely.

Got a chance to try out Betrayal at Hill House this weekend and sadly I don't know how often it will be played. The guys in the group thought it was pretty fun but the women.... man, they just hated it. Bummed because I was into it so unless we get a few more players to unbalance the vote of which game to play, I don't think it will be chosen much.

I played Love Letter for the first time last night.
It was my friend's home made re-theme. It's a very simple, very fun card game. I'm sure you've all played it before. If not, check it out even if the original version isn't Arrested Development themed.
We also tried to play X-Com, but we only just got past the tutorial before we needed to catch the last subway home.

Also, a few weeks back I played the mini version of Slap .45 that came with Cards Against Humanity's 10 Days or Whatever of Kwanzaa. I don't think the full size game has been released yet but I definitely recommend it to everyone. Another very simple, very fun game. You each get six gunfighters and a home base. You sit with your hands rested at your sides, hovering over your pretend gun holsters. Players take turns flipping a card from the deck. It will either be a gun, a horse, or a cannon.
  • If it's a gun, players can either slap their home base, or try to slap the gun and point at someone else with pistol fingers. If they manage to do so before that person has slapped their base, that person has lost a gunfighter.
  • If it's a horse, players need to slap someone (Anyone's) home base. If a player slaps the horse or slaps a home base someone's already slapped, they lose a gunfighter. If everyone safely slaps a homebase, the last one to do so loses a gunfighter.
  • If it's a cannon, players can slap the cannon and point at another player with pistol fingers. It doesn't matter if that person is in cover, they lose a gunfighter.
It's crazy fast moving and insanity ensues. We also decided to draw our six gunfighters and cross them off to keep score. And that if you lost a gunfighter you had to finish your drink.

We should come up with a HalForums-themed board game. Like something along the lines of Snakes and Ladders (or Chutes 'n Ladders), except call it "Nurrs and Durrs". The ladders would be based on the positive ratings in forum and what-not, while the snakes/chutes would be the negative ones.

And, of course, one space would say "Agree with Charlie," and send you back to the start space... ;)

"You find out what REALLY happened on Nick's prom night! :Leyla:
You are removed from the game."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"You try to find out what's west of Acapulco.
Lose 5 turns."

Played Star Wars Imperial Assault again today. Good christ in a bucket, the game is BRUTAL. Somehow the players managed to win the first game played by just running objectives and ignoring the Imperials shooting them to shreds. The second, however, was much tougher as we were required to remove all of our opponents from the field by the end of turn 7 (every game has a round timer like this). My character was dead by the end of turn 4. We almost pulled off a victory somehow by playing very defensive when we had to and finally charging in when we had whittled them down to 3 guys at the end. Very close game with one Imperial alive at the end of round 7.

Very cool game, but seriously causes some brain drain. The Imps have all the information and the Rebels get almost none. Half the time you're flying blind and the Imperials do a crap ton of damage.

Recently picked up Alien Frontiers + the Factions expansion. Really fun worker placement game where you use dice as your ships(workers) with the values determining where you can play them on the board. Really fun game.

Got to play King of Tokyo + expansion while visiting family. For the most part, it's a great game and a lot of fun, but we hit a snag. For most of the games, people were playing it safe, amassing energy and powers and not wanting to take the first step into Tokyo. Usually I'd get in and get the ball rolling, but in the last game we played, I decided to wait for someone else to stake their claim.

Well ... that ended up being a slow game. What should've taken 30 to 40 minutes ended up taking two hours, and it's not a game that should go for two hours. It's also not a game to be played like Monopoly; to be fun, people have to be willing to get aggressive.

the first player to roll a claw automatically goes into Tokyo. Prevents people from amassing tons of energy and avoiding getting the game rolling.

I didn't understand this from the rules. That would've made things work so much better. It's just if you're stuck with a claw after you're out of re-rolls, right?

Also, if you get stuck with claws later, do you have to attack or can you choose not to? I no longer have the rules on hand, but I'd like to know before I get the game for our house.

Yup, if you roll three times and you have a claw with no one in Tokyo, you go in.

You have to attack.

I have not talked about Sheriff of Nottingham. Bought it last week and played w/ friends for the first time last friday. Riotously good fun and I also discovered that I am not a very good liar, except to my S.O. In her defense, she gets caught up in my dreamy eyes. :p

Played a game of that last week. I lost terribly to the honest traders but smuggling is definitely more fun.

Especially if you try to play the lovable rogue who everybody knows is dirty but who is more than willing to offer damn good bribes.
