I can think of plenty of people who have flocked to games because they were called "Diablo clones." Though, "Action RPG" would be the more correct term, something that still has no real meaning if you haven't played one before.
You're missing the point. "Diablo clones" is an appealing term because Diablo sold well, and gamers talked about it. It was a positive term. What are people willing to buy, Patagonian Toothfish or Chilean Seabass? Which is going to sell better "Inspired by a popular game" or "Shuffle things around in your inventory to make space to pick up more stuff"? That's the problem with selling people on a "walking simulator", they don't want to walk. Most people hate to walk. Why would you try to sell them on the idea of simulating something that moving walkways and trams were created to avoid? To sell people on this new type of experience, you need to figure out what the selling point of the new experience is, and it sure as hell ain't walking.[DOUBLEPOST=1433543282,1433543204][/DOUBLEPOST]
"Dungeon crawling clickfest"
Even that's better than "walking simulator" because it's got the word "dungeon" in it. Gamers love fighting their way through dungeons.

Polygon article on how indie developers might have to try new tricks to survive on Steam with the refund policy.

As often as Polygon does something stupid (like the recent Rockband 4 review), they also put out gems like this. It feels like sitting down and listen to some con artists talk shop... time delays, bundling, holding back content... the indie scene is gonna be weird soon and it's all because the only way they could make money before was because they didn't have to give it back.
I don't feel like these things are going to actually generate sales though. They're really going to have to get down to games that people will want to keep.

I like walking simulators... I was a fan of both Dear Esther and Gone Home.

Rumors about Dark Souls 3 are a-swirling. Supposedly it'll make an appearance at E3, and it'll be coming to consoles in 2016, with a delayed release for PC.

It's kind of a catch-22. On the one hand, I want more indie studios to enter the marketplace and Steam is the best way to do this. On the other hand, 90% of the indie scene is putting out shit and acting like we need to buy shit in order to support them long enough to get a quality product... someday. When they're ready. But you gotta buy this Unity asset filled piece of shit because they aren't a graphic artist and don't want to pay for one when they can just buy assets.

It's like... why should it be on ME to foster your talent? If you had talent, you'd be putting stuff I wanted to buy in the first place.

"Wah, people can return our product if they're not satisied!"

Welcome to the real world, you little fetuses. Software should not be some magic realm where the customer has zero recourse for a bad product.

Is there any other industry where independent start-ups feel threatened by customers demanding satisfaction?

This article makes some really bad assumptions. For instance, they assume that Steam titles bought during sales, but never played, are prime candidates for being returned. HA! Unless a person is really strapped for cash, they're not going to be jumping to return something they snagged during a sale. They'll keep it in their library, and by the time they play it, it'll be to late to get a refund. (Which is a point most of the article conveniently forgets, that the refund has a 14 day window.)

If Indie developers are so terrified of refunds on Steam, then they should just push sites like GamersGate, Green Man Gaming, Amazon, etc. Third party sales aren't eligible for refunds. This is something the article never talks about.

I'm also laughing at how stupid this article sounds trying to act like there's suddenly this huge incentive to get people locked in for 2 hours of play! I think every game designer ever would love to be able to get a player to put in 2 hours without stopping. (Well, except for Squeenix, who apparently think that 13+ hours before the game starts getting good is the way to go.) If your game is good, then getting a player to put in 2 hours without even thinking about the clock isn't a challenge. And if you can make the first two hours good, then just go ahead and make the whole game good too, okay?

If you're whining about how gamers can now try games for up to 2 hours, testing to see which they want to spend their money on, then you're scum for wanting to win customers based on ignorance.

If you're whining about how now gamers can get up to 2 hours of your game for free, you're an idiot because if they really wanted to never spend money on games they'd go out and pirate them, not just limit themselves to 2 hour chunks with lots of filling out forms in between.

If you're whining about how your game has less than 2 hours of gameplay, and you made it just before this announcement then I feel bad for you, but see my point above. If you've only got an hour to offer, then you'd better be sure it's something people are going to feel is worth their money. People like to pay for good content. They really do. If you didn't make something worth people's money, then you don't deserve to make money off of it, and never did.

Capcom's releasing the Megaman Legacy Collection, containing MM1-6 and some other small features.

I don't really see the appeal, honestly. I'm glad they're doing something with the franchise, at least (more than can be said for Nintendo and Metroid), but this just seems like a lazy cash-grab to coincide with Inafune's game coming out this year.

It's something, but ... come on, guys, release something we can't already download. MM1-6 are already on the 3DS eshop. Granted, this is $15, price of three games on there, so that's a nice discount if you don't already have them. Still, I'm hoping to hear actual intentions for something in the future.

8 was on playstation, 9 was a Wii game (so it might be considered too recent to throw into a classic bundle), ditto for 10.
9 and 10 are both on PSN. But yeah, and then 7 is SNES. Plus there's & Bass.

The X series has the same problems, 1-3 for SNES, 4-5 for PS1, and 6-8 on PS2.

The only ones that are consistent are Zero series for GBA and Legends series for PS1. Even the Battle Network games are spread over GBA and DS, I believe. So it's hard to get a complete collection for any of it.

Also Capcom didn't develop 9 and 10, just published them. Inti Creates, the guys who have been making the other MM-ish games (Gunvolt, Mighty No. 9) lately, developed 9 and 10.[DOUBLEPOST=1433819142,1433819076][/DOUBLEPOST]Also also, I paid about 20 bucks for the MMX collection on PS2 last year, and the MM Anniversary Collections are 1-8, I think, plus some bonus games (including the fighting game).

Well, that just makes this new release even more pointless.

Chris Avellone has left Obsidian. The only way this could possibly make me happy is if it's to announce he's taken the design lead/writing job at Bethesda.

I'm almost certain he's doing this to become a free agent and take deals from several companies, not just one. It's a really smart move if that's what he's going for. Another option is he wants to start writing books, which would also be a stellar career move (it's worked from Neil Gaiman). There's also the possibility that he has his own projects that he wants to do and now he's got the pull to get them done, he might be forming his own studio.

Regardless, Chris Avellone is going to be doing great shit for years to come.

Blizz is finally (sort of) caving on the no-flight stance they've held onto since the opening of the current WoW expansion.

I don't play anymore, so I don't care if they add flying back or not. I do dislike how they've completely 180'd their stance on it. Multiple devs were adamant that there would be no flying EVER. One even said they might not bring it back in future xpacs. If you want to listen to your playerbase at all, ever, you can't deal in those kinds of black/white answers when it comes to abilities you're adding/removing.

Well of course they changed their mind, they've got $20 flying mounts they gotta sell on the blizzard store.

Not to mention hemorrhaging subs every month.

Any kinda fool
Could
Seeeeeeeeeeeee
I was wrong♫
I canceled my account, never even got a char to 100, I just couldn't care anymore. And then blizz made a hots reward for getting a WoW char to 100.

Well played, Blizzard. Well played

I quit a long time before that. Was just before the second expansion. Was almost to 60, I think, and doing another one of those "kill X chaos orcs and come back here" quests and it suddenly occurred to me that if I had to kill one more stupid chaos orc I was going to vomit.
I told Pauline as much, we said goodbye to our guild and cancelled our accounts, and never looked back. The grind just got too fucking ridiculous. And from that day on, I could never bring myself to PVE grind. The only MMO I played since was Warhammer Online, and even then, I leveled up exclusively by killing other players and the quests/objectives related to doing so. Mostly by taking a castle away from the other player faction and then staying to defend it when they came to take it back. Eventually EA ruined it, as they do everything they touch. Guild Wars 2 filled the gap for a little bit, but it was balanced too heavily in favor of attackers (defending any objective was always a losing proposition, and raw numbers/population trumped tactics every time), so we quit that, and I haven't done the MMO thing ever since, abarring the brief couple hours I spent finding out I didn't care for Rift, Aion, Tera, or Wildstar.

You try Elder Scrolls Online? Once you hit lvl 10, you can go to Cyrodil and engage in the persistent PVP. I'm told it's a lot like Dark Age of Camelot's, in that it's three factions fighting over territory that gives you and your side bonuses. Lots of raiding and you can use siege machines to tear down enemy walls or fight off enemies. Quite a bit of back and forth... I've enjoyed it, but it feels like it takes FOREVER to get XP from just PVPing and the rewards aren't exactly worth it. But it's tons of fun at least.

Yeah, that latter is what I heard, too - which was honestly the case in DAOC as well, you couldn't level up at a reasonable rate in RvR/PvP back then. It was actually possible in warhammer online to level FASTER in pvp than in PVE, on a good night, and not only that but enemies dropped tokens that could be traded in at bounty merchants for level appropriate gear.

The upshot was you never had to ever touch a PVE quest if you didn't want to, and I didn't. I didn't actually care much for the endgame though... the best top level gear was, of course, earned in PVE raids on super upper level stuff that involved a lot of the usual PVE garbage. So usually what happened was I had alts in every lower tier (RvR was broken into brackets for every 10 or so levels), and every time one leveled out to the endgame, I deleted and rerolled him at level 1 to start over.

I know that towards the end they made it so you could get comparable gear by engaging in the capital city raids and having your side win. It was still awful to obtain though... you only had a handful of pieces drop for an entire PVP raid and typically the people who became champions for the fight against the king got them by virtue of being walking engines of death thanks to game mechanics. This meant that you had to be the best of your class on your side BEFORE the last fight, which meant you were actively trying to fuck over your teammates.

Ironically, I had an entire set of Sovereign gear for my Magus that I never got to use because I'd have had to grind out days of PVP to get the rank for it and Magus was gimped in PVP thanks to spammable AOE cleaneses.

Oh my engineer totally feels for your magus. Not only did the AOE cleanses bone him, but they nerfed his damage early on and changed him so he couldn't debuff his own damage type any more.

Granted, before that... Pauline and I were basically defending keeps just the two of us vs up to two entire warbands with me spamming my AE DoTs...

But anyway, it was an extra slap in the face that, yes, to get the bestest gear there was, you had to RvR to open up the enemy cities and win the city PvP encounter.... but that was just the first step. That left the enemy city open for PvE raiding for (I forget how many) hours, and that encounter that made the drops drop was 100% stupid bullshit boss PvE.

And then the Tomb Kings expansion came along and mucked shit up even further. It was "Trials of Atlantis" all over again.

It's hard to balance the acquisition of PVP gear though... on the one hand, if there is too much of it out there, it becomes a requirement for PVP because everyone has it. On the other hand, make it too difficult to acquire and people won't try to get ANY PVP gear because what's the point? The devs for SWTOR are doing massive changes to the PVP economy entirely because less than 2% of people engaging in PVP had full sets of even the basic PVP gear, let alone the top stuff. But that's sort of what happens when you need to engage in ranked matchs (you have to be subbed or pay for a 7 day ticket to do these) in order to get the comms for buying them. Now EVERYONE is going to have them because you only need normal warzone comms.

I almost wish they did it like TSW does, where gear isn't as important as your uniform, which you can only upgrade via killing other players.

That doesn't affect anything since Capcom still owns the games. Inti also did the Mega Man Zero games, but Capcom put out a DS collection of those and has been releasing them on the Wii U Virtual Console.

Well, that just makes this new release even more pointless.
Except the emulation on the WiiU is trash. The whole point of this new collection, listening to an interview with a couple of the guys working on it, is to create 100% accurate, perfect recreations of the NES games that are easy to port to any platform, along with a ton of extras, to prove to Capcom there is a market for accurately preserving old games. They hope to continue to do this for more Mega Man games and beyond.

I get the point and it's probably a reason for me to get it (challenge + MM1 + MM6 is worth $15). Why are the emulations trash though? I didn't detect any issue with the Megaman X one, nor with Earthbound or Super Mario World or any of the others.

Granted, the NES Mega Man titles I've only played on the 3DS VC because I like taking those games on the go. If they made an X collection that could be ported to 3DS, I'd pay a full game's price for it. So I do support the endeavor.

It has issues displaying NES colours correctly. It does a much better job with SNES games, but it's NES emulation is pretty awful.
