These guys do it, ergo everyone else should, too! Well, except for Jim Davis, he has a team of artists drawing for him.
The list of cartoonists whose art style remained the same for years and years is a very long one. If the taste of coffee at Starbucks evolved as much as Gabe's art, they might have gone out of business. And that's what Penny Arcade is now, first and foremost - a business. I guess so long as he keeps pulling in the clicks, they'll keep making money... but this guy is one of their viewers who is rapidly getting over the nostalgia that keeps him coming back to a product he doesn't like any more.

I mean, I stopped reading PA years ago. I don't particularly like his new art style; it seems a little too self-indulgent and myopic in my opinion. But I think I understand where he's coming from, and he's in the enviable position of being able to do whatever the fuck he wants, so more power to him.

Didn't seem to be a problem for Jim Davis. Or Berkely Breathed, or Charles Schultz, or...
I'm on my phone right now so I can't pull up the photos, but both Schultz's and Breathed's art changed dramatically during their tenure. Breathed's over the course of 9 years, even.

I know there was some progression, and that the Peanuts used to look younger than they did later, but I'd assert it was far more consistent over the years than PA's has been. But I guess YMMV.

Gabe gets a lot of shit for his art, but he didn't start getting work outside his strip until after he became more experimental. Now he gets to do art for WoW cards, comic books, and other shit... ON TOP of his multi-million dollar media empire.

The difference is that Schulz and Breathed's styles evolved into something good.

Yes, Snoopy changed a lot from his original version, but he stabalized in the 1970s, and it's a really good design that was settled on.

Even the radical shift to a more cartoony style was with a purpose. Snoopy's personality changed along with that look. Snoopy went from being a fairly realistic dog, to the almost human character that he is now. Snoopy's look was refined with an eye to consistent characterization, so that he'd be a recognizable icon. The same thing happened for Garfield, and Hobbes, and pretty much any character of note.

Penny Arcade's art, as best I can tell, is just Gabe experimenting with different art styles. It doesn't seem to be connected to characterization, or with an eye to be consistent. It's just him playing with art. Which isn't a bad thing, in and of itself, but in this case it's resulted in a style that I think is disconnected from the comic and the characters. Gabe is supposed to be a father, but other than being taller than his son, they look the same age. The art isn't serving the characterization.[DOUBLEPOST=1435794969,1435794891][/DOUBLEPOST]

I think this might be a case of correlation not equalizing causation.

Does today's Penny Arcade feel like it got the dialogue switched? Gabe's lines sound more like stuff Tycho would say, and Tycho's ignorant intrigue seems more like a Gabe quality.

A little bit, yeah. The only thing I'd give it a pass for is that Gabe has expressed an interest in golf in the past and Tycho hasn't. (Unless I'm misremembering, which is possible.)

Yeah, Mike Krahulik was actually on their school's Varsity Golf team, according to one of Jerry's comments in one of their books (when Tycho and Gabe go golfing together for the first time). The character of Gabe is an avid golfer, with his own Golf Slave, Hector, while Tycho knows almost nothing except that you can drink and drive the golf carts.

I agree a bit with everyone. Its obvious and logical that there's progression and evolution in his art; I wouldn't like to still be looking at PA looking like it did in the beginning. The new evolutions and experiments have certainly helped him become a better over all artist, and have landed him some new and exciting jobs.
That doesn't mean I have to like the current PA style, though. The noses, teeth, the "extreme" snot, slobber, slime, spit, whatever, in some comics - Ren and Stimpy style - is not my cup of tea, and I don't think it meshes will with a lot of the jokes made.

It wasn't today in particular, just today's the day I decide to stop reading it. It's been on the verge for a while.

...wait, Shauna's parents weren't married? Uh...okay. Its a good thing for that tatoo otherwise that would've felt like a weak twist. Also is it fair to say that "Space is the Place" was one of the weaker story archs? Not bad mind you, but it lacked the panache that the previous ones had.

Blah blah blah Penny Arcade
Yak yak yak art getting progressively worse
Hibbada hobbida Gabe looking younger than when the comic started

Today's Penny Arcade made me laugh.

Bad shit going on in Gunnerkrigg, but what else is new?
Yeah, either that girl is going through some WICKED teen stuff(emphasis on wicked with the magic)- OR Annie's dad is evil. Guessing more evil, and even if not I want to hit him in the face with a golf club.

It's probably both. Annie seems to be repressing even the thought that any of this is wrong and thanks to her being all magical and such, it's having consequences.

Ha ha ha... Jo of Nerf Now is a filthy casual, and doesn't like being given grief about it in his comment section.

He won't play killing floor because it doesn't give you crosshairs.
