Star Wars Ep. VII has a name...

Also depends on the type of fan service. Gratuitous ass shots I don't need. References to old movies....well, a couple are ok.

Don't forget that the Phantom Menace was "Fresh" until the 3rd movie came out.

But I'm watching this on Dec 21st.
That's what I was trying to remember. There was so much hype that it took awhile for folks to settle down and realize that it was shit. People applauded at the 20th century fox fanfare, the Lucasfilm title, the opening crawl, and the credits. Some even gave a standing ovation. I think we all wanted to like it so much, and the excitement carried us. Sort of when you meet someone and really dig them and don't see their flaws, and over time you realize they're a train wreck.

I found 2 and 3 way more annoying than 1, probably because Duel of the Fates is such iconic music and the only things that stick out in my mind when I think of episodes 2 and 3 are things like "I don't like sand," and "I have the high ground you can't win!"

The friends I usually go see movies with aren't able to go until sunday, but I'm wondering about going myself earlier because dodging spoilers all weekend doesn't sound fun.

... I have to watch my brother's newborn child so he and my sister-in-law can go see it.

I think that's awesome of you though, when my kids were young we had just moved across the country and so we could never really go out ever.[DOUBLEPOST=1450372754,1450372681][/DOUBLEPOST]

I'm going on Saturday afternoon, I'll be sure to talk about it in Vent if you haven't seen it yet.

(I'm totally kidding, I swear)

I don't know if I agree with watching three before 6, it's going to ruin the Sister moment.

TOO LATE NOW.

I made that exact same joke this morning.

Speaking of which, she's watching Ep III right now, then ROTJ today.

That reminds me, Terrik, did Jun catch the foreshadowing in Empire when Obi Wan said "That boy is our last hope," and Yoda said "No, there is another," in reference to his unrevealed sister?

But yeah, it's a tradeoff... The Flashback viewing order makes Leia's reveal come in ep 3 instead of JSB, but you get to watch the prequels without foreknowledge of Palpatine's becoming emperor (although Jun picked up immediately that he was a "bad guy").

It also keeps Vader's backstory fresh for the "there is good in him" heel/face turn.

I think most of the initial positive buzz was in the spectacle of it (like Avatar), plus the movie basically stuck the landing with the Duel of the Fates scene.
The Duel of the Fates music is amazing. Nothing but love there. The actual fight scene is fun, a well choreographed high action lightsaber fight, something that fans had never seen before, and for the spectacle is was pretty amazing, and clearly the best part of that movie.

But when I really think about it, not even that scene really holds up with the original trilogy. In the end, it's just a fight, and the reason of that fight is "I'm the bad guy and I'm gonna fight you now." In the original three, every lightsaber duel was more than just a fight. It was a philosophical discussion. The first scene between Vader and Obi Wan was basically just old men tapping sabers together (giggity) but it felt much more intense because of what it represented. It was the meeting of teacher and student again, it was a clashing of ideologies, of light vs dark. Vader wants to show Obi Wan that he was basically right, that the dark side is superior. Obi Wan then makes a very important choice, he shows his mastery by choosing not to fight. He chooses peace of violence, and ascends to a higher plane because of it, becoming one with the living force. In Empire, Luke is there to save his friends, but the fight, again, is a discussion. Vader is toying with Luke, he wants to show him his power, and he wants to evoke his anger and make him turn to the dark side so that he will join him. Luke fights, and fails, and in the end learns the big reveal, having his world shattered. Then once again, in RotJ, they duel again, and this time Luke is prepared. The fight is, as previous, more than just a fight. They are basically battling for Luke's soul, with the menacing Emperor manipulating him into giving into his anger to become his new apprentice. Like Obi Wan, Luke wins the fight by finally choosing not to fight, by not delivering the finishing blow to Vader.

And so, when you look back on Episode 1's big finisher... it's just a fight. I suppose you could say the ending foreshadows episode 3, but high ground did jack shit for Darth Maul.

Movie starts at 7 and it's 430 they are already seating and the theater was halfway full but we still got top row center seats!

It's fun being a person who doesn't worry about spoilers. I have no fear of the internet or finding out some little tidbit here or there that could "RUIN" the experience for me.

-sigh- I may have to start preemptively avoiding this thread, just like certain parts of the internet.

(GF and I are currently in different cities, and once re-united we shall be traveling for a few days)
