Video Game News and Miscellany

This is kinda hilarious in retrospect, because GameInformer and I'm sure other game news places had a big article some time back about how having the TV show and game tie into each other was going to revolutionize media ... somehow. And then Microsoft couldn't see their "vision," so they fucked up their own game in response. Which implies the game couldn't function by itself anyway.

And he's getting a lot of shit from console fanboys over this, too.
I'm sorry, a shit game is a shit game, no matter the platform it's on.
Fucking brand whores.
These are the same people that were outraged when Microsoft announced that it wasn't going to be exclusive to the xbone anymore, that it would be on PC too. The thought that other people might get to play their (shitty) game infuriated them.

What they should have been furious about is Microsoft insisting you have to use the windows X marketplace to buy it, but now that reviews are out, I doubt anyone much cares now.

The second point was actually the issue: a PC port didn't bother them, as previous experience with ports (Alan Wake, Alan Wake's American Nightmare) resulted in them making back the development costs in less then a single day. It's been pure profit ever since. No, the real reason they are upset is that they can't put the game on Steam where it will sell and because they were forced into using Microsoft's UWP, which is what is causing most of the port issues. Had Remedy been given enough time to make a proper PC port then none of this would have happened, as they have already proven themselves capable at making them.

I meant specifically the console fanboys crying foul because someone that doesn't own an xbone might be able to play it. But yes, the rest is Microsoft being stupid. In fact, all of Quantum Break speaks of the early failed philosophy Microsoft had, when they thought the future of Xbox was using it to watch TV and football.

Microsoft is right that the end goal of the console race is going to be a box that can do everything... but it still needs to be first and foremost a video game console because the average consumer isn't going to be dropping $400-600 on something that plays music or works as a cable box. They can already buy things that do that for less than half that price. But a guy who wants to play high-end games really kind of has to ether buy an expensive console or build their own rig, which is something not everyone can do.

Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse, due out this summer.

Atlus is releasing both a new SMT and a new Persona game this summer. Combining that with Monster Hunter ... nope, something's just going to have to be purchased later. I won't have time for it all at once.
The original is on sale for ios today for 4$. Worth it?

WoW: Legion was announced for an 8/30/16 release.

That means likely about 13 months with no content update, as the pre-patch will probably be the month prior to release.

I never played the original from back in the 90s. I've watched videos and it felt like a pretty rough game in the way a lot of RPGs were back then.

Looks like Quantum Break won't be the last try at blending television and video games. Ken Levine is working on an interactive Twilight Zone series.

This is what he shut down his company for? Hurray, we're going back to the 32X.

I love cinematic adventure story games. Heavy Rain was my jam, I loved both of the walking dead telltale games, and more recently I adored life is strange. But they all kept me invested and immersed in the game I was playing, and didn't force me to stop and watch TV for half an hour.

Exactly.

If what they're proposing is supposed to merge TV and video games, it's going to be a pain in the ass. If this was what Ashburner is suggesting, that would be fine. But that's not revolutionary, that's been done before. So either they're sensationalizing it as new when it isn't, or it'll be a potential mess like Quantum Break.

I hope for the latter because I want Ken Levine to crash and burn. I want him to be shit without the team he disbanded out of boredom.

I don't think North America will be too affected because Sega likes money, but this may be the death blow to Atlus releases in Europe.
Yeah it's hard to say. I mean, people have been asking them for Phantasy Star Online 2 forever, and they haven't bothered with that, but I dunno. Atlus is the king of niche titles, and NIS is right there with them. It'll be interesting to see how things change, if at all.

Yeah, that doesn't surprise me at all. They needed a flagship to drop with the NX and with how little they were saying about Zelda WiiU this news was basically a given.

As predicted by many ... That said, having a Zelda game in the launch line-up makes a new console look pretty nice.

Pretty much, at least for me. I'm sure E3 will show up a bunch of crap coming out in the latter half of the year, plus info on the new Pokemon games, and a bunch of hype for the NX release. The games releasing for Nintendo consoles that I'm most looking forward to are third-party releases (they do exist!) and maybe more SNES stuff for N3DS. I don't even think 2017 is going to be so great because that'll be the year with the new console and gamers won't be cozy with it yet while developers are still making things, so probably we can look for a solid Nintendo year in 2018.

From Software and Miyazaki declare "Dark Souls is over."

That's what we knew, but there could be a new game in the same gist, like Bloodborne--

"No more sequels, spin-offs, or tie-ins."

Maybe they want to work on the sequel to one of their old classics...
