Knowing that Rich has a reason for literally everything he does, I want to know the design decision behind the rider's boots.

My initial guess was/is that they're cleats for climbing ice, as well as doubling as spurs that can be felt through the flying beastie's thick hide.
 
Individual "toes" would significantly reduce the ability to prevent frostbite in cold climate, though. Unless they're cosmetic (i.e., not the wearer's actual toes).

I went there after reading the Goblins thread trying to get caught up after being gone for a couple days. I thought, "Someone HAD to have posted this already."
 
Redcloak's feet confirm that the toe-things are boots. The rider's right foot in the last 4 panels tells us where the balls of his feet are--the toes are not purely cosmetic.
