Gas Bandit's Political Thread V: The Vampire Likes Bats

Even though the previous comment contained some exaggeration, Kati and I did have a bit of a discussion about the whole mansplaining thing, and her strongest comment was, "Could he have possibly chosen a more 'Male' avatar?"

TIL using a picture of yourself holding a sword as your Twitter avatar is "too male"
Male-pattern baldness, full beard, holding a symbol of a male-dominated profession (be it nerds-holding-props, LARPing, SCA heavy fighting, live-steel, or military)...

He could have truck nuts hanging from the sword, I guess, and be shirtless so as to expose his tasteful nipples.

In the interest of full disclosure, her biggest gripe with him is his story of growing up "poor" in Sweden, which by her measure is a whole different story than growing up poor in the USA. Doesn't stop her from playing 1-4hrs of Minecraft/day, though.

Well, a picture of a bald Nordic man with a beard and a sword IS pretty male, even if it is a selfie.[DOUBLEPOST=1464119627,1464119520][/DOUBLEPOST]

The Transition from poor to rich in sweden is going from getting $40k/yr in government socialist benefits to having $40k/yr left over after taxes :awesome:

My issue comes from the train of thought that people will get offended over someone's nerdy selfie now.
*UPDATE* *UPDATE* *UPDATE*

...seems the comment was not directed at Notch's selfie, but instead at his choice of "Steve" as the default in-game avatar. It appears she is by far not the only person wishing that a wider selection of appearances in the game had been a higher priority.

I seem to recall notch at one point saying that his biggest regret with minecraft was not giving Steve a gender neutral name.

Well, you can skin your avatar in any way you want, be it gender, species, or animate inanimate object.... but yeah, the shoulders are kinda wide and the shape has no curves. But, again, there's a mod for that.

To be fair, nothing in the game has curves.
The only counterexample I can think of off the top of my head is the fishing line that goes between the rod and bobber when you're fishing, and I'm not sure that really counts.

But anyway, you wouldn't even have to have curves, merely different body proportions.

Eh, it doesn't matter, anyway. Cover it all up with diamond armor IMO.

Activist "Fans" are clamoring for Marvel to "give Captain America a boyfriend."

I wonder what their reaction would be if a movie studio was going to "give" an established homosexual male character a girlfriend. Or even if there were just "fans" urging it.
But you just don't understand because you don't read the right analysis and fanfics! Steve Rogers is totally homosexual, you can tell because he never gets past kissing with a girl. The only true debate is whether his soulmate is Tony Stark or Bucky! :awesome:

Tumblr-tots.

That's almost as stupid as the article I read where the writer seems to think Civil War would have been better if Cap and Tony had been fighting for the affections of Black Widow, someone they have been "apparently lusting over for the better part of several movies", instead of the world altering super villain and his plot. There is a very serious disconnect in what some critics and audiences want and what those characters represent and have been depicted as.

I'm not saying Captain America needs a boyfriend, but the main difference is that there are about 0 established gay superheroes in movies, and about 1 billion straight ones.

To which I would point out that Deadpool is pansexual. But he's still the only big one right now and he's still mostly interested in a woman in his own movie, so it's not surprising more people don't that about his character.

I dunno... maybe we could get Midnighter and Apollo? Or possibly Batwoman and The Question? If we're getting a Birds of Prey movie with Harley Quinn at some point, that could definitely happen.

I don't read the comics, but isn't being in an abusive relationship with the joker one of her defining characteristics?

Well, maybe the Ultimate universe will start getting movies at some point, and then movie-Colossus can be movie-gay.

I mean, in the cartoon she was probably hooking up with Poison Ivy at least once, and she was born from the cartoon if I remember correctly.

Dei is correct... Harley was originally supposed to be a one-and-done throwaway sidekick for Joker in Batman:TAS, but proved to be too popular to not return, and then crossed over into other media. And yeah, there's been instances where she's gotten fed up with the Joker and shacked up with Poison Ivy.[DOUBLEPOST=1464126387,1464126333][/DOUBLEPOST]Oh and just one more parting salvo on the Dicks/Cunts discussion from a page ago -

Well, I was mostly referencing the Kathy Kane/Renee Montoya relationship in Birds of Prey (as there have been movie rumors for it) but as the others have said... yes, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy are "girlfriends without monogamy", as DC choose to put it themselves. Harley is still mostly in love with Mr. J, but she and Ivy hook up all the time.

Pretty sure Congress is also sporting historically high negative ratings, and yet it's essentially unchanged every year.
