[TV] The What Anime Are You Watching Thread!

I suppose it's fair. I have issues with Japanese live-action adaptations of anime because anime is drawn in such a way that none of the characters look to be of asian descent.
Except oddly enough the occasional skeevy salaryman type.

Ajin is fun. I still don't care much for Netflix's animation style--especially the facial expressions. However, can't fault an anime where the villain loves and quotes the A-Team.

That is an accurate description of Guilty Crown and the same thing I kept thinking. Why the hell are these people giving this dude such a hard time about being messed up by the shitty situation. Then, in like three scenes wheelchair asshole who gave him the hardest time has LITERALLY THE SAME PROBLEM only she expects the protagonist to feel bad about it. Maybe it was intentional so that he'd have a motivation to evolve into a dictator or something. Who knows.

Ghost Stories

The "funny parts" montages don't do it justice. The english dubbing is hilarious, the ad-libs, sex jokes, non-sequiturs, 4th-wall breaks and meta-humor transform what apparently was a boring, unsuccessful, by-the-numbers anime into comedy gold. It reminds me of Hotdiggedydemon's PONY.MOV series, or an even raunchier version of Shin-chan. I can only imagine how fun it was to work on the english localization. They start off with at least a token effort to adhere to the plot and keep it PG, but it doesn't take long for them to figuratively and literally say "fuck it" and just start making shit up out of left field. And the cherry on top is the Japanese played-straight-but-completely-inappropriate closing credits music. Seriously? A song called "Sexy sexy" when all the protagonists are elementary school kids? What the "fizzidy-uck."

Gag dubs are the best, especially when the original series itself was a comedy. For this reason, Crayon Shin-chan is actually one of my favorite dubs of all time.

That was my bedtime show for a week a few months back, I loved it. Go watch it, y'all, it's on youtube and all.

Just finished kamisama kiss s2. It was more of the same. Mc is doted on by cute yokai men. While also learning to be a better shrine god.

Haven't been watching too much lately.

Boku no Hero Academia is a great shounen, I also recommend the manga.

Bakuon is fun. Cute girls riding motorcycles.

Bungou Stray Dogs is a neat comedy-action thing.

Been a fan of BHA for a while, one of the VERY few realistic superhero stories that I feel is well...realistic! Because most of the time when its a "realistic" superhero story, its pretty much that all the superheroes are douchebags, which would LOGICALLY make them super villains but fuck it its satire.

This is sort of why I want a "Soon I Will Be Invincible" movie: the villain is villainous but likable enough that you'll rout for him and the heroes are heroic but broken enough that anything that happens to them is THEIR fault. Doubt we'll ever get it though.

Florida Residents Unperturbed By Summoned Giant Demon Snake: 'That ain't even the weirdest shit I've seen TODAY', local claims.

Little Witch Academia is getting a TV series. To anyone who hasn't seen the 30 minute short or the hour long OVA they produced, Little Witch Academia is basically Harry Potter if...

- Harry was a girl
- Harry thought shonen witches were awesome
- It took place in an all girl's witch school
- Harry kind of sucked at being a witch

Even one of the rival girls is basically Draco Malfoy as a teenage girl. It's got a bit of a Sailor Moon/Madoka feel to it, in that it's got the shojo stuff for the young girls but also plenty of intense action. I highly recommend it.

Trailer for short:

Trailer for OVA:

(Apparently the animation team for this were fans of Gravity Falls and Steven Universe. You can see Dipper and Mabel in one of the crowd shots. Rebecca Sugar and Ian JQ are in another shot as well.)

It's worth noting Trigger is the studio responsible, so the animation is top-notch. However, it's nowhere near as insane as Kill La Kill. If anything, I'd say the tone is much closer to what you'd get out of a Ghibli movie.

I've been watching Dragon Ball Super and holy crap is this slow. I've taken to watching the episodes at 1.5x - 3x speeds, just to keep the pace going. All I can think is that this would be so much better if Team Four Star were in charge of writing.

I don't know where Toei has been putting their cash, but it definitely is not going to DBS. I dropped it after about 10 episodes because the animation was hot garbage.

Oh hey

I've been having a weird anime binge lately, and actually sat through someone playing all three routes of Fate/Stay Night the visual novel on YouTube just to watch UFOTABLE's Fate Stay/Zero and (less so) Fate Stay/Night Unlimited Blade Works.

Holy shit. Zero is now up there with Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood as my favorite anime of all fucking time. It's glorious and awesome and shiny and funny and sad and perfect. Although I don't know if it'd be the same without having seen/read the whole visual novel, has anyone else seen this gem?

I mean, by god, UFOTABLE's animation by itself made me look up every single anime they've ever done. Still not disappointed.

UFOTable's done almost, if not all, intro animations for the Tales games, which are always fun to watch as they're built like anime OPs.
Huh, I didn0't know about the intros, but I did know they're doing an actual full-on Tales anime that I believe is airing like RIGHT NOW, Tales of Zestiria the X, I believe it's called. Haven't seen it, never really got into a Tales game, but I'm inclined to watch it once it's over just cause UFOTABLE.

Why is Caska super white now? What the hell?!
NSFW image comparison, which is pretty damning:

What a terrible design decision--not even entering into the issues surrounding whitewashing, there's always been speculation that her skin color might hint at her having Kushan blood. This kind of shits all over that, and also dilutes her character design (she stood out for being one of the very few dark-skinned characters in the series, pre-shit-going-bananas).

Yeah that's pretty fucked up. There's no good reason as to why. Her dark skin was hinted as being part of why she was something of an outsider, even among The Hawks, it was part of her character.

I'd say that had more to do with her being a woman than anything else. I can't recall race coming into it, at least in the manga (pre-Kushan) and original show. The story centers more on class (like a whole fucking lot) and heterotypical gender status (hence why we had an entire arc dedicated to the consequences of Griffith taking it up the ass).

On the bright side, the percent of female minorities raped in the story just went from 100% to zero :awesome:

Except for all the Kushan women?

Also, first episode in and we already get Isidro?

Boooooo! BOO FUCKING NEW BERSERK SHOW!

Also, the music fucking sucks.

I'm literally writing this review while I watch the episode.

It also looks awful.

I am sad.

OH MY GOD, THE OLD MAN AND THE GIRL ON THE WAGON! THIS IS SOME SUB-PS2 LEVEL SHIT!

The animation looks even worse than the still.

How did this happen? Is Berserk that unpopular that this is the best it could get? Fuck sakes.

Gonna keep watching the series till I get Serpico. If Serpico's fucked up, then I'm out. Serpico for life.

I want a Serpico solo series.

I usually give shows three episodes, but this garbage animation and style has me done at one. Japan's CG is 90% hot trash and they need to stop.
