I'm going to try riding my bike to see if I can hatch eggs that way. I've heard it suggested that as long as you stay under 15mph it'll still count.
I've had great luck hatching eggs while riding my bike. There's a park near us so I can sometimes get two eggs hatched per ride.

Are you boating? I know the rumor's out there, but you really won't find Gyarados 100miles out at sea.

I've read that it's both...so if you're driving a smooth straight distance (even if it's under 20mph) you wont rack up as many km as if you're on a bumpy road, taking lots of turns, or jiggling the phone while driving.
Hatched this today while taking my daily 1m walk around the neighborhood
I love how when you hatch a pokemon, it gives you a bunch of candies.
Yeah, tried driving slowly in the industrial park of my work after I finished my shift, drove 2 km at 10 kph and gained 0.1km on Pokemon. Not worth it 
Hatched a Meowth yesterday. Keep seeing Meowths and Dragonite and Abra silhouettes but they're always gone when I can go after them. Pfeh.

The two closest gyms to my office were inexplicably yellow, so I boosted one up enough to drop one in to the nearest one, helping to give it a pretty diverse and deep bench for red and blue to battle. The further one I didn't need to boost but it didn't have much going for it, so I just plopped a Nidoqueen in there and claimed my coins for the day. Then someone else came along and cranked the strength of the more distant of the two really high (which must have been easy with such a shallow bench, 3 total now). If some more Team Yellow drop into that gym it might be formidable as well. How is Yellow still ruling the roost around here today? We have clearly been the underdogs!

Summing up the video's conclusions:
Pokemon within 40 meters can appear, between 40 - 60 meters will have 1 footprint, 60-90 will have two, and 90 meters plus will have 3 footprints.
I had the various footprints for the first week, but haven't had them since. Everything is showing up at 3 steps, even when it's on the screen for me to catch.
I caught one of these at the beach today! Surprised the heck out of me! Meanwhile, I am haunted by Psyducks. I always get the shadow, but never see one. I'm starting to think they're only a rumor.

I have seen 2 water types ever. Yay.
I caught the Horsea while at worship band practice at our church, while in the video room, not sure there is "water" within 2 miles of that position. So, I don't know. On the other hand, I'm really jealous of the various types that you've found.Well, right now, there's a bug and everything is 3 footprints.
