TIL: Today I Learned

TIL-Victor Zazamataz, the guy who cuts himself after every kill he makes...was in the Lego Batman franchise...how the FUCK did that get past censors?!

Today one of my users learned: that deleting email from the deleted email folder does not automatically kick off an archive of the deleted email...

TIL: Sioux Indians peacefully surrendered as their land was being stolen, then still were attacked by US forces in the Wounded Knee Massacre
TIL: Sioux is a shortened derogatory term another tribe told the French was their name, roughly translated as "Oh, those fuckers are devils". They are the Lakota.

You'll sometimes hear "Lakota Sioux" as well.
Only reason I've heard this is because Cranky has always been obsessed with Native American stuff.

Most tribal names aren't especially nice, particularly if the name was gotten from a tribal enemy. For example, the Comanche called themselves the Nermernuh, and were part of the Shoshone nation. "Comanche" was a Ute term meaning "someone who wants to fight (us) all the time", or, more simply, "the enemy".

The Sioux called the Algonquin people of the Plains "sahiyena" ('red speakers', or 'speaks unintelligibly') because they couldn't understand their language; this was adapted into Cheyenne.

"Apache" was a Zuni word for "renegade" or "enemy".

"Mohawk" was a Narraganset word meaning "flesh eaters".

Otherwise, most tribal names mean "the people".

Probably because he just uses a magic marker in the LEGO version, or something. Like how the Red Lanterns have strawberry jam instead of blood.

Very good-ALSO-I learned "Smellovision" was actually a real thing, and not just a joke in a Bugs Bunny cartoon. Look it up! From what I've heard, it did NOT go over well.

It never occurred to me to think about this stuff. I always just operated under the, I suppose ignorant, assumption that they were all just anglicizations of self-identified names. Of course they wouldn't be![DOUBLEPOST=1480608703,1480608669][/DOUBLEPOST]There is so much stuff to know.

Also: for many years, I believed that the title of the second-in-command chef was "sioux chef" as opposed to "sous-chef". I thought it was some kind of racist term that had just been casually incorporated into the language and forgotten about.

It's not just native American tribes, either. A lot of our names for other countries are not what the people who live there call their countries.

There's a ton of them that are interesting. Like, "Iroquois" is the French derivation of Alqonguin 'Iroku', which meant "rattlesnakes". As you can tell, they didn't have a high regard for the Iroquois confederation. The Iroquois themselves used the term 'Haudenosaunee' for the confederation, which meant "six nations", though earlier they used the term 'Kanonsionni', which means "people of the long house", since they built long wooden houses to endure the fierce winters of the Northeast. One of the Iroquois tribes, the Mohawk, called Algonquins 'Adirondack', meaning "bark eaters"; Mohawk was an Algonquin term meaning "(man)flesh-eaters", but the Mohawks called themselves Kanienkehaka, or 'people of the flint', based off their skill knapping flint tools and weapons and the plentiful flint rock in their territory.

On the other hand, you have the Seneca, which is a straight adaptation of Osininka, one of their main villages. They called themselves "Onandowaga", or "people of the mountain". Oneida is derived from the tribe's name for itself, Onyota'aka, 'people of the standing stone', and Onondaga is from 'Onundaga'ono', "people of the hill". Cayuga is from 'Gayogohono', or "people of the swamp", due to the marsh areas they lived in. Tuscarora was from the tribe's name for itself, "Skarureh", or "hemp people". Indian hemp, which we call 'milkweed', produces strong fibers that they used for rope, ceremonial objects, and cloth for shirts.

The tribe that was local to where I live was the "Lenni-Lenape", or "Delaware" people. Lenni-Lenape means "the original/first people".

TIL that Lucas said in an interview that the frame story for Star Wars is R2 and Threepio relating the events to some new audience. Hence the "long ago in a galaxy far away" bit. There's also some claims that Lucas said that the galaxy is the Milky Way, and it's set in our future. Can't find a source on that one though.

My favorite is the one where the set is literally collapsing around them.
Or the one where the perp is in the scene, realizes they're all refusing to move, but can't escape because the door is blocked by another mannequin, then literally runs into the 4th wall.

I learned that an entire country divided by a ultra-socialist crazy left and a religious military right can rally behind and complain about a music video showing only penises and vaginas. NSFW, loads of private parts.

Not a lot of Brazilians among those Brazilians.

It's December, waxing is popular in summer and bikini season, as our microscopic summer wear make any hair down there look like an Afro.
