Hi all!
Briefly de-lurking to put out a call for anyone who wants to participate in GISHWHES this year. Registration closes in two days (yikes!).
If you don't know, GISHWHES is a giant, international, week-long scavenger hunt/fundraising event/goofy activity week, headed up by Misha Collins of the TV show Supernatural. Teams work to complete a variety of wacky-to-seemingly impossible tasks. Incidentally, it's apparently the last year they're doing GISHWHES in its current incarnation, so if you've been considering it before, now's the year to join!
Here's a couple of goofy videos of me doing some of the pre-hunt challenges (to give you an idea of what kind of stuff to expect, or, y'know, if you're just curious about what I look like!)
Random info:
--It costs money to sign up to participate. $21.08 gets you involved in the madness, more gets you random swag (see the registration site. Profits (outside of running expenses) are donated to charity organizations, including Random Acts (501c3). Also, they're currently buying rainforest in Nepal to establish a wildlife preserve! If money is a concern but you really want to participate, there are scholarships as well.
--The scavenger hunt will run the week of August 5th-12th.
--You don't have to live anywhere in particular, or near your team to participate (there are group and individual tasks).
--You don't have to do any specific number of tasks, the whole team divvies things up!
--You DO have to be able to document the completion of tasks (photo or video) so some sort of camera-type device is necessary.
--Theoretically, one could win a trip to Hawaii at the end of this. The odds are not in one's favor to do so, but you never know.
Anyway, general heads-up if you always wanted to do this but haven't signed up yet. If you sign up and are looking for a team, I'm still looking for a few people to fill some empty spots in my team--PM me for info!
TL;DR - If you're into crazy scavenger hunt-type things, consider GISHWHES and maybe join my team

@CynicalKat did GISHWHES two years ago, it was fun from what I recall. I'll bug them about it.
iPhone person here. Former android user. One thing I like about iPhones is that you always have the latest OS no matter what device you have.
4S tops out at iOS 9.
Later this year when iOS 11 comes out, my iPhone 5 will be left behind stuck on iOS 10, which will probably finally force me to upgrade.

But when the software *was* still updating for the 4S, you didn't have the carrier blocking the update for months on end. Or adding a pile of "exclusive" apps. Or replacing apps the manufacturer had pre-installed.
The fact that there exists a company in the consumer space that keeps 5+ year old hardware up to date should be inspiring. This exists in the commercial space for long term support, but is exceptional in the consumer space.
Even more so, since they update the hardware every year, and if they were out for money they wouldn't support anything past two or maybe three years, and force people to upgrade or get left behind.

It's my first GISHWHES, so no direct prior knowledge of it, but I haven't heard anything but positive experiences from the people I've spoken to about it (which is actually a little crazy...for most everything there are at least a few complainers!)

You know how sometimes when an old acquaintance suddenly hits you up on Facebook, you can pretty much predict it's because they've got some favor to ask or have some need of you? Like, maybe they want to give you their latest MLM sales pitch, or they want to borrow money, or they have a translation or some proofreading they need done, or stuff like that?
Well, this girl I haven't spoken to in around 5 years suddenly contacted me on QQ (a messaging program used in China), but instead of asking for a favor, she is now sending me pictures of her recent trip to the beach.
Not sure if she just wants to share beach pictures, or if she knows buttering me up with beach pictures first will make me more amenable to doing her a favor. I suspect the latter.

I need to get a better practice lock. I've got raking down, to the point where I often accidentally open the lock simply by inserting the L-rake. And raking is supposedly good enough for 90% of locks out there. But now I am trying to practice single-pin picking, which is what most people think of when they think "lockpicking," but the problem is while I am practicing I often end up zipping or raking the lock open by accident with the hook, which, while it "succeeds" in opening the lock, it defeats the purpose - learning to SPP, so that I can open locks that raking/zipping isn't good enough to defeat.

I'd actually like another one made of acrylic, it's helpful in learning to be able to "cheat" and see the internals if I'm messing up.
Tonight my wife was attacked by a German Shepard while she was entering a child park while pushing my 3 year old daughter in her stroller.
My wife was entering the side gate on the opposite side of the street (and about 20 feet inside the grass of the park) when she heard the sound of an animal barking and rushing to her from behind. It seems like the dog escaped the attention of a minor who's house is across the street. My wife was terrified and screamed putting herself between our child and the animal and the animal scratched her from behind with its huge paws.
We're very luck this is all that happened as it could have been much worse. I was out with a friend when this happened and I could assure you I would have killed this dog.
I'm very upset at this situation due to a number of issues:
I took pictures of my wife's scratch marks and will take pictures of the location of the attack as well as the distance traveled by the dog. My goal is to formalize a complaint with police tomorrow morning but I also want the city to act on this incident as well. I lodged a complain with them as well.

If my child was walking, she could have been mauled by this beast while doing nothing but visiting the child park in front of this owner's house. This dog shouldn't be unleashed in front of their house with young children frequenting the area. - The owner were COMPLETELY UNAPOLOGETIC for their property causing stress and physical harm. They attempted to blame my wife panic being the cause of the entire problem. This is unacceptable behavior from dog owners! They are responsible of their dog as per city by-laws.
- This is not the first time this child park has unleashed dogs in and around it it and I was always worried about it. I want the city to put up proper signs to ensure dogs cannot roam the park without being on a leash.

I know full well the dog didn't bite my wife which will likely cause the police case to miss severity. They'll likely just think it was a friendly dog who was overly excited but holy shit it ran 100 feet, across the street and almost into the park and climbed on my wife and scratched her back. There's no way a dog that big should be allowed to roam without a leash with so many kids around.
A review of leash laws for your municipality might shed some light on a possible resolution to this. Filing the report would be step 1, yes.
But, like Frank said, what's MOST LIKELY to happen is a stern talking-to. At best, a citation with a fine.
But reporting it sets a precedent. Gods forbid, should another attack occur, then you'll have established that the animal has issues with this behavior, and it's been noted before.

Size/breed of the dog doesn't matter as much as the training, and the owners obviously dropped the ball there. Frank and OC already spoke up so I'm not giving advice, just offering my condolences as to having shitty dog owning neighbors. And I hope (and it seems thankfully) that your wife and child are ok. Sorry Jay.

We're still hanging on in the Land of Aloha. I've been doing case management and some juvenile justice counseling (part of a diversion program) this summer. It's a lot of work and sometimes super frustrating, particularly the case management side. I really like juvenile justice counseling. I'm pretty sure I'll go for my LCSW licensure after graduation next spring.
Aussie is doing well although being the mostly stay-at-home spouse has been a challenge. The kids are happy and healthy, as you can see in the picture I posted. My daughter is about to turn 8 tomorrow/today. My son will be 12 in about 2 weeks. He got into all honors classes in his middle school. Both are doing karate and loving it.
So I'm part of Gas's RimWorld game which means I'll be around more frequently to see what's happening with my "pawn".
