[PC Game] Halforums House: Rimworld - the story thread

RimCog had friends half a year ago and now he doesn't. And why doen't he have enemies? I made him especifically to be antisocial.

Not mentioned: The Ballad of Bumpy, the World's Dumbest Dog (R.I.P.)
If I had to mention every unbonded animal that wandered off and died to being stupid, this would be the world's most depressing thread :p At least this time, it's not day-old kittens getting into the beer and drinking themselves to death. That was horrifying. [DOUBLEPOST=1502205848,1502205761][/DOUBLEPOST]

It may be that he just isn't spending enough time around other people to form strong opinions, one way or the other. And also to really REALLY be hated you generally have to have a failed romance or kill someone's immediate relative.

I feel like my pawn is doing things and contributing now. :aaah:
It's pretty amazing what can be done with a high melee skill, a plasteel sword, a suit of power armor and a shield belt. You've pretty much become the shock troop I wanted Terrik to be :p

I only have the one shield belt for the whole colony, unfortunately. They take uranium to make, and I can't spare any... and they cost thousands from the traders...

Maybe I should start pulling them off dead pirates. Pawns don't like wearing stuff pulled off dead bodies, but maybe that won't bother Terrik, given his bloodlust trait...

I thought you had a mod for that.

No, the mod I have just adds an "allow dead man's clothing" filter for storage areas, specifically so it can be unchecked (as in, it allows you to say "no deadman's clothing allowed here). Why the vanilla version has "allow non-deadman's clothing" but not the other is mystifying to me.

Eh, it's a game mechanic that makes sense to me, though. Unlike the fact that every colonist who kills a chicken for dinner now is getting a -5 social penalty  that's bullshit. I know Tynan said they're gonna fix it but that doesn't help me NOW.

I just googled up where it is in the game's files, I'm going to change the social penalty to 0.

For anyone else who wants to know, it is in

Mods/Core/Defs/ThoughtDefs/Thoughts_Situation_Social.xml

Entry "KilledColonyAnimal," change from -5 to 0.

Glad Megumi got her miraculous revenge off for me :c I was super sad I died to friendly fire. Such a boring way to go out. But she fixed it for me :3 what a good pet.
Pawns can be so dumb sometimes. Last night, there was almost a hunting accident that I stopped by noticing it happening.

Null: "Oh look, there's a deer behind Dave"
Dave: "Oh look, there's a squirrel behind Null"
(Both raise their guns, point at each other)
Me: "NO YOU IDIOTS"

Geez, what is with my horrible aim this week?
Also, sorry you have to change your name to Van Gogh, @klew .
At least you only shot off his ear . . . actually, I was rather upset that you only shot off his ear, but I see he's no longer arrowing in on my wife so I'm not so concerned he's plotting to murder me.

Oh, and I think I know what's up with your aim. You're getting soft. I mean, look at the all those arrows emanating from you - they're turning green. You're warming up to people. You're getting soft.

That ibex was coming straight at him! :ninja:

I blame all the snu-snu with GenSpec. Every time I tune in to Gasbandit Live! there's hearts coming out of our room. It's a good thing the game doesn't let us reproduce, because I swear our pawns caught Stienmanitis and we're going to repopulate the colony with GenZ babies.

Well, I mean, you guys ARE barely turning 20. What else would you be doing on what amounts to a farm with no internet and the constant threat of death at any given moment?

Also, there's a mod to add pregnancy and babies, but I decided not to :p it's hard enough to keep up with the people we've got, and despite my best efforts to block it, you guys keep finding ways to bring in more people.

Ah, so art immitating real life, then. Except less death and more internet.

No, I'm good with the lack of babies. Got enough in real life, kthx.

I've found a mod that adds worrying about reproductive organs, but not one that actually adds babies...

Dear I just had sex thread,

I never thought this would happen to me, but.... :unibrow:

My poor mini me...there's no makeup that will cover a bionic nose.
Actually, the entire point of the artificial nose is to restore your looks, so no, nobody can even tell a difference :p

I'm just wondering what exactly I'm doing in this game. It almost seems like I'm CeltZ's bodyguard and/or concierge.
Mostly research and animal handling. Which doesn't often cause anything to explode, burn down, or die, so you don't make a lot of headlines :p Here, there will be an update on everyone's stats in the story post I'm about to make.

HALFORUMS HOUSE:RIMWORLD - Year 5502, part 3 - Winter

Dec 2 - Breaking from tradition, Emrys and BErt decide to have their wedding ACTUALLY IN THE ROSE GARDEN specifically made for weddings. Whodathunkit?!

Pictured: Thank Jibbers, I thought this area was going to go entirely to waste.

Dec 4 - Cargo Pods land within the wall... full of painting supplies? That night a cold snap rolls in, and almost all the crops in the field die unharvested.

Pictured: The gods are mocking us.

Dec 7 - 18 man-hunting elk enter the area. Ravenpoe barely makes it back inside the wall in time. Longshank is not so lucky and gets badly stomped. Fortunately, the elk don't finish him off and move on... he regains consciousness on his own during the fight at the main gate, and sneaks back in a postern. Patrthom and Thynne are caught outside, too, but manage to hide in a ruined building until the Elk have passed them by. The fight at the gate is excellently conducted and there are no injuries on our side.

Pictured: Longshank Pezzleton gets trampled by angry elk.

Pictured: Well, I guess that decides the menu for the week.

Dec 8 - The cold snap finishes, but it's still pretty cold out at night. At least the days are warmer, though, and the fields can be replanted. Noblhippy propositions Bubble181. They are now lovers.

Pictured: Noblhippy cajoles Bubble into her bed.

Dec 9 - A poison ship crashes out west. New experimental EMP mortars are built, to help deal with the menace with less danger to colonists and structures. Turns out the EMPs don't damage the ship itself. When the centipedes pop out, turns out the EMPs only stun them. Regular mortars are added into the mix. The bombardment continues through the night. The mechanoids run back and forth in confusion, and kill off all the boomalopes sent to harrass them as well. Gotta start taming boomalopes all over again. Ah well, that's what they're for.

Dec 10 - Adam insults Zero and a fight ensues. They fight goes on a long time, and they both get pretty beat up, but nothing permanent.

Pictured: Adam v Zero

Dec 12 - An item stash is located through rumor that is said to have uranium in it. Terrik, SpecialKO, Frank and Charon are sent to check it out via transport pod. Turns out it's a pirate outpost. GasBandit, Ravenpoe, and Gruebeard are sent as backup. The fight goes reasonably well, with some light injuries to our side. The pirates are nearly annihilated. The reward is sweet. It, and the raiding party, are sent back to the compound by transport pod over the next 48 hours.

Pictured: Scouting the pirate outpost

Pictured: After the pirates are dead or run off, the loot is plundered.

Pictured: ooh, more loot.

Dec 14 - A mysterious blight wipes out half the crops, or more. DarkAudit and Dave get into a fight in the kitchen, gumming up the cooking routine and wasting medkits to heal their bruises. Ravenpoe tries to clear a bear out that has wandered into the compound, but it attacks him. Despite Wasabi helping him, he gets downed and his nose is bitten off. She carries him to the infirmary. Jun is able to install a new artificial nose on him that very night. With the spoils of the raid, there's enough uranium to build the ship's reactor core.

Pictured: Dave v DarkAudit

Pictured: Ravenpoe finds the situation unBEARable

Dec 15 - the prisoners stage a prison break! Emrys is in the jail feeding them when they spring into action, and wound her. She runs for it. The Militia arrives ASAP. Emrys has received a collection of bruises, and Klew gets hit by a suspiciously large amount of friendly fire, but the prisoners are downed. Patrthom's father's eye is shot out in the proceedings. The debate is rekindled about what to do with the prisoners. A fox attacks a muffalo calf. Thynne attempts to rescue the calf, but whatever affected Celt Z seems to have Thynne in its grip as well - he is completely unable to hit the fox, and in fact shoots the calf to death by accident. By the time the fox is killed, it has actually scratched the ever-loving shit out of Thynne and he needs medical attention urgently. That night, when Ashburner is looking in on the prisoners, they stage another prison break, despite being heavily wounded. Moffa and SpecialKO are first on the scene to deal with it. Zappit's father, Veniamin Pitt, is shot dead by Moffa, who is now the subject of Zappit's undying hatred. SpecialKO manages to down Patrthom's father while keeping him alive, but Sir Menner has infected wounds. Veniamin is buried in a grave to the west of the colony mausoleum. The ship's reactor is completed. Now the main structure and the cryptosleep pods. Several hundred more uranium will be needed for that, along with steel and plasteel. It's looking more likely that the colonists will get off... but if we want to take animals, and/or relatives of varying degrees of repute, we'll need even more... and that's assuming we can protect the thing while we build it. The other factions might get awful desperate when they learn about the incoming Planetkiller...

Well, I guess that does it as far as the annoying-good-guy-routine goes for my pawn.

Huzzah! Twue Wove!

Also, paint supplies, clearly the Gods have finally started listening to @Squidleybits.

The question I keep asking still hasn't been reasonably answered. If X's daddy is in the raiding party, would they not attack X because of it? If daddy dies because he's trying to kill colonists, X better get down on their knees in thanks to whoever did it, not hold a lifelong grudge. Otherwise, go join the pirates and pray they never come after us again, because you're going down first.

You're trying to apply real-world logic/philosophy to a game where this situation has been defined differently. Regardless of your personal views, the fact remains that killing someone's immediate relative under any circumstances - even Justified self-defense - has social and morale implications of a magnitude that can't be ignored. It's all very well and good to say "fuck them they attacked us, string them up" but the numbers work how they work and define the game's reality. So killing them is something to at least try to avoid unless it can't be helped.

You are basically saying "Mario should just shoot the Koopas with a fucking machine gun." Yes, that would be a lot more effective and perhaps even more realistic than throwing fireballs and flying with a tail, but it is not how the game defines these interactions.

If you want an in-game explanation for why things are this way, maybe this will help - until 3 years ago, these people were family you saw every day. Then the ship was destroyed, the lifepods were scattered, and for all you knew they were dead (and for all they knew, you were dead). We had the luck to land as a group in a habitable area where there was no already established human presence, and could start a new colony - some of our parents, siblings, lovers didn't. Some of them landed near other colonies and got taken in by the other factions. Others landed amongst pirates and had to do what they had to do to survive. In all likelihood, they didn't even know they were shooting at kin because the pirates wouldn't know who they were related to, and the fog of war makes picking out faces difficult. So, what happens in the heat of battle has a logical flow, but what is discovered when the dust settles changes things, and must be taken into account.

I can even understand why they might try to stage a jailbreak. Sir has been held for over a year in a prison barrack with no indication that release will *ever* be forthcoming, and they've probably heard the debate outside of "what is to be done" with them. It's not guaranteed they'll be released at all, or even taken with the others when the ship leaves. It becomes really easy to become convinced you've got nothing to lose in a bid for freedom - at least on the outside, you can try to find your own way off the planet, even if it is unlikely.

So, their motivations are understandable, even if it doesn't change what they've done.

LOL... what was my pawn going to do if they tried to escape? Grow them something?
You were probably there taking them food or something.

At first I didn't realize that your stat grabs were a gallery, and I thought you were trying to say that we were all becoming homogeneous because we all kept having the same things happen to all of us.

Also I'm happy you kept the legend of GenSpec and GenReSpec alive.
