Yeah, though it's been around so long, it's such a major discovery for college-age readers that I make a firm point not to spoil what happens.

I try not to spoil things for anybody if I can help it. Even if they say it's okay to spoil. Finding out for yourself during the course of the movie/book/show is half the fun.

With Blade Runner? I mean, it's a 30+ year old movie. As a big sci-fi guy, of course I've heard discussions on it. Especially pertaining to the different versions. Kind of hard to avoid. It's like being around Star Wars stuff for decades and not knowing the iconic reveal in Empire.

I didn't like Harry Potter so I looked up spoilers when it came out. I went up to my friend while he was literally reading it and said "have gotten to the part where Dumbledore dies yet?" He is still kinda mad at me.

Same-ish here. I've seen maybe 20-30min in total of the movie, from a tiny television through a barely-cracked bedroom door (the same way I saw the M*A*S*H finale, btw) and have never carved out the time to see the entirety of any version. With regards to this specific spoiler, I've heard about it, sure, but because it's a thing which is mainly left open to the interpretation of the viewer (as opposed to being an actual specific plot point), it's not as big of a deal as, say, the Empire reveal or the provenance of Soylent green.

I really like music, and I always have. When I was really young, I figured out I had an "ear" for it, in that once I heard a song once or twice I could figure out the notes on a keyboard really easily. Unfortunately, my fingers have always been short, so I had a hard time learning to play... but my music teachers got me into music theory. I didn't stick with it after grade school, but even today I love watching videos about it.... the 8-bit music theory youtube channel is practically porn, to me.

During the course of the conversation, the subject of his next proposed Alien prequel came up and he revealed a little bit about it, without giving away too much. Likely to the chagrin of many fans, he says the next movie will focus more on androids and A.I, as opposed to Xenomorphs. Here's what he had to say about the Alien: Covenant sequel.

"I think the evolution of the Alien himself is nearly over, but what I was trying to do was transcend and move to another story, which would be taken over by A.I.'s. The world that the AI might create as a leader if he finds himself on a new planet. We have actually quite a big layout for the next one."

As a fan of Alien: Isolation, I'll say that the Steegson Working Joes and their AI APOLLO were actually pretty terrifying in their own right, easily as much or more so than Ash in the first movie. They can work as antagonists. But i'd hardly call it an "Alien" movie at that point; it needs the Xenomorph. You want a plot involving the AI and Aliens? Have this AI doing Weyland-Yutani's bidding and basically have an entire planet full of crazed AI's that are protecting xenomorph specimens. Then you have two fronts working against the protagonist...

I mean that's more or less the whole unspoken thing in the entire Alien franchise: ultimately, the corporation is the villain. In Alien, the Nostromo was diverted to LV 426 by the company because they wanted a sample of the organism to study. The entire crew was expendable to them. In Aliens, once Ripley was found and told them about what was on the planet, Burke in particular sent an order to go to the wreckage, which resulted in the colony being eradicated by the xenomorphs and the eventually total destruction of the place. Hell, in Alien 3 Weyland-Yutani showed up at the prison planet because of the possibility of harvesting a queen larvae. Again, and again, and again in the series, we see the corporation sacrificing people because they want the alien, to control it, though by it's very nature, it's uncontrollable.

This whole bullshit in Promotheus and Covenant with the rogue android David is, quite frankly, nonsense.

Shane Black's The Predator reboot has gotten a new poster release.

Apparently this movie is going to be set in the suburbs. That's an interesting idea.

I have faith in this movie because Shane Black has a strong track record with ridiculous action movies that I love even though I acknowledge they're terrible, so this is right up his alley.

Also, he was Hawkins in the original Predator.

So I'd imagine he has a lot of respect for the material.


The release date will be my 40th birthday. So I know what I'm doing.

Welp, with The Last Jedi coming out, I think I'm gonna start rewatching the previous Star Wars films.

However, for the original trilogy, I'm doing it right: I'm gonna download the DESpecialized Editions, a fan project to make high definition editions of the original trilogy, but without all the silly changes Lucas made in various re-releases. No Greedo shot first. No Vader yelling "NOOO!" when he tosses the emperor. No Jabba in A New Hope. No unnecessary music number in Jedi. Just the original footage, cleaned up.

That sounds awesome. I've got the original versions of the OT on DVD, but you can tell which scenes have been tinkered with in the special editions because they're still at Laserdisc quality.

It's mind-blowing the work and continued effort these fans are putting into these editions. Right now, I think versions 2.5 are out for each. Maybe 2.0 for Empire. But they're still releasing new versions with even better quality pictures or editing. Their primary source is the official BluRay release, but the other sources they use to edit everything out is staggering. LaserDisc, older DVD releases, TV tapings, still images. It's incredible.

I'm talking with some friends about this on Facebook right now, and about the special editions. I'll copy/paste some things I said there:

There are a LOT of things I like about the Special Editions. I like the reworked effects and cleaned up picture. I like some of the extra background details they added to give more depth. Opening the "windows" on Cloud City being the best example, with some GORGEOUS CG-added backgrounds. And I liked them adding Ian Mcdiarmid into Empire Strikes Back to give more continuity to the rest of the series (not so much Anakin at the end of Jedi).

But then you get a lot of those unnecessary CG characters in the background that's more distracting than anything else. And haven't aged well. I don't like Jabba being in the first film because I think holding him off until the third film makes his first appearance much more special. It's a great reveal of the character. And I hate the musical number because it's unnecessary filler. Oh, also? Much as I appreciate the addition of showing celebrations across the galaxy at the end of Jedi, it's at the expense of the "YUB YUB!" song. And that's just sacrilege to me.

I have the despecs for all 3 movies, and they are a beauty to behold. Fantastic sound and image, and the same visuals my nostalgia-addled brain remembers seeing in the shitty VHS copies.
