What are you playing?

Golf Story

This is an indie golf RPG on the nintendo switch. I didn't know I needed a golf rpg in my life, but it turns out I do. This game is fucking rad.

I was going to get it, but I got Stardew Valley instead, because clearly I need to play through it a third time. >.>

I busted my ass and got the best of all possible outcomes on my first playthrough... so now I can never play it again. But I also can't uninstall it, because that's where my wife and children live and I have the perfect life.

Well sure, I'm just going to save the community center every time, because fuck Joja.

Cuphead

This game is as difficult as they say, but it's not excrutiatingly hard or unforgiving like Dark Souls. The levels are short so you don't lose much progress. It has more in common with Super Meat Boy than Dark Souls.

And the art style is AMAZING. Every enemy design is unique and makes me wonder what the hell kind of drugs these guys were on during the designing process. The music is super catchy.

So yeah, overall, the Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam is well deserved. And I'm not even halfway through the game yet!

Cuphead

I learned there are at least two neat things to unlock in Cuphead: technicolor mode and black & white mode (which also changes the music somehow). Technicolor is unlocked by getting an A rating in at least 15 levels. Black & is unlocked by getting a Pacifist rating on all Run & Gun levels. Then in both cases, you talk to a certain charater on the map.

So I beat some of the early Run & Gun levels. REALLY hard because you can't kill any enemies. It's especially tricky with mini-bosses that block your way. Doable, but tricky.

It's cute that a beaten level has a gold P (for pacifist) on its flag on the map.

I love being rewarded with gold P.

...WAIT, NO, THAT'S NOT WHAT I MEANT!

Meanwhile, in Golf Story ~

*Poe sinks a hole in one, mostly on accident*

I AM A GOLFING GOD! EVERYONE BOW TO ME!

*One hole later and 5 over par, stuck in a water hazard*

Golf is a bullshit game.

I was gifted Divinity: Original Sin 2, and I gave it a shot today. So far I've been shipwrecked and picked up two party members. As well as a cat, for some reason. Never played the first one, so I'm pretty lost in terms of the lore, and I have no idea if my character and party builds are all that effective. I also haven't been very inventive in combat so far, since "click on things to hit them with my sword until they die" has been perfectly effective up to now. Still, though, I feel like there's a deep RPG experience in there under the surface, just waiting for me to delve into it.

Also I totally get what Gas means about the overwhelming temptation to go full murderhobo.

One of the NPCs you can get can talk to the cat. So can you if you get the right skill.

There's also a mod that gives all characters pet pal for free, because it's bullshit to have to spend a talent point on it, but using mods means you won't get steam achievements.

I'm amazed no one has made a mod to override that yet, like they did for Cities: Skylines.

Borderlands

On the one hand, I can see I'd get very bored with this game if I didn't play it online with others. Had a great time tonight with @GasBandit, @Dave, and @Officer_Charon.

On the other hand, because I enjoyed their conversation so much, I barely paid attention to the game itself, what characters were saying, or what the missions said. I was just pressing buttons and following along.
This is how I enjoy Divinity 2 Original Sin :p

Hack N Slash

Well, this was a disappointment. I've enjoyed every other Double Fine game, so I had hopes I'd enjoy this. And I did at first, hacking into rocks, bushes, enemies, guards, and changing their...variables? Is that the right word? But the game became more and more complicated. Not in an enjoyable way. It added several items, many of which were either useless or cluttered the screen with info. And then the hacking mechanic became even more complicated where you whisked yourself away into a subsection to do a different hacking puzzle. But I had no clue what I was doing.

As much as I love the idea behind the game, it's not very accessible to people like me who are clueless when it comes to coding.

You gonna be up for more Borderlands tonight?

One of this days I would like to try playing coop with you. The problem is I can't understand "normal" english. I can understand tv, movies, radio, no problem. But two friends talking each other or someone singing? Nope. I guess this is a reason for me to join. I need to get used to the language.

If you have the game, we can give it a try - lag might be a factor due to the geographical distance, be warned.

Also, obviously, you'll need to get Discord.

The only mod I really even want is the one that keeps every item I pick up from being put on my toolbar.
I asked in the comments thread if there's a fucking mod that lets you click a destination on the map to walk there, instead of having to pan the camera 900 miles. No responses yet.

Scanner Sombre

Pretty game that has no idea what it wants to be. I like the visuals, and revealing the world with the scanner works as a mechanic. It's really short, though, only took me an hour and a half, and even that started to overstay it's welcome because the map design and the visuals start to degrade into crap.

The "story" is paper thin; the visuals deserve something better. I'd love to see more done with the concept of having to scan a world to see it.

As it is, Scanner Sombre is just a lousy walking simulator with cool visuals that is severely hampered by not being able to decide if it wants to scare you or inspire joy in exploration. It's not worth $10 (and, thankfully, a friend gifted it to me via Humble Bundle). It might be worth a buck or two if you want to experience the visuals. Just play for 45 minutes and don't bother to finish if you get bored.

Neverwinter

I was itching for a D&D fix. This has the monsters but it doesn't feel much like D&D. I tried several classes, and they are so normalized that they all feel the same. I will play a bit more to see if it changes.

I already got crap for it by the barbarians on Discord last night, but I am playing Middle Earth: Shadow of War, and you know what? It's great. It took everything I liked about the first game, and made it better. I havent bought any lootboxes, although I've earned them through online sieges/vendettas/challenges. I'm actually quite happy with it. However my purchase has labeled me a criminal of the worst sort, and I've been ordered on a 100 year penitent crusade for supporting the downfall of gaming.

I was about to ask if somebody here got it. The first was great but I'm unsure buying the new one. Too many games coming out.

Did you get any funny orcs yet?

I've reinstalled Borderlands for some unknown reason...
I purchased it last night as part of the deal (too good of a deal to pass up at least), but it took almost an hour to download all of it, and by then everyone had moved on to another game already.

...oh wait, they haven't? Hmm.
