Current binge is Servant x Service. Because Lucy.

Unrelated, has anyone ever lampshaded the Calling Your Attack trope by having the opponent getting bored and going home in the middle of a particularly long attack name?
Well, not exactly an attack name, but in Black Lagoon, Revy did shoot a guy in the middle of a monolog about how awesome his gun was, then berate him for it.

Assassination Classroom - We've been using this as eye bleach after watching some graphic movies/shows (like after finishing Hateful Eight *shudders*). We only have 6 episodes left in season 1. It is such a weird, quirky show. I can't wait to see who succeeds in the assassination!

We've also been watching Tokyo Ghoul. We're only on episode 7, so I'm giving it a chance before I decide whether or not I like it. So far, though, I really hate Kaneki. I told my cat that, despite being a female and spayed, she still has more balls than him.
Still Watching Assassination Classroom. We're on S2 now. I've been trying to be good about only watching episodes with Aussie. That means I've watched more of Tokyo Ghoul since our schedules are wonky now. Made it to S2 E6. It's definitely gotten more interesting and Kaneki's evolution has made a difference.

Which brings me to another anime I've tried to watch and just can't: Black Clover. I got it as a recommendation based on other anime I like. It sounded like it was going to be a good fit. I had hope at least. But...
Episode 1 - This guy is screaming so much. I hope he stops.
Episode 2 - He's still screaming a lot. Annoying.
Episode 3 - Baka! Stop screaming every time you talk or move or breathe!!
Episode 4 - Nope, still screaming. I'm done.

Blend-S: the surprise is here! Makes up for yet another variation of Dino's MAIKA-CHAAAAAN!!! This time it was just embarrassing.

That's the only current anime on my plate right now. About to finish Gabriel DropOut. Time to go hunting for something else, I guess.

Monster Arms Dealer might be the next one to look out for. In a world where a vast assortment of magical beasts roam the land, weapons are made to combat them, created from the body parts of the beasts themselves. However like any weapon used for self-defense, others use them for crime on the black market...including every weapon Tell's master created right before he was killed by bandits. He puts it on himself to find every weapon his master created and destroy them to honor his teacher.

I really love the weapon designs, their all unique and monstrous, and that's just from ONE chapter!

So it's...Friday the 13th: The Series, but in manga?

That Shirobako binge has me thinking. When you're part of a studio, and not a freelancer, how do you keep your dignity and sanity when they drop a project as dark and disturbing as King's Game in your lap?

Gate

This one really got its hooks in me, and I binged 10 episodes last night when I really should have been sleeping. It's a story where a gate (uh huh) opens up in the middle of a busy Tokyo intersection that leads to another world, one of knights, dragons, elves, sorcerers, catgirls, etc. And for some reason, a fantasy medieval army comes pouring through the gate and attacks the shocked civilian populace. Of course, it doesn't take long for the JSDF to mobilize and utterly stomp the invading cavalry, pikemen, and wyvern-riders, who are after all no match for machine guns, armored vehicles, and attack helicopters. The decision is then made to send the SDF through the gate, since it doesn't seem to be closing, fortify the other side, and make contact with whoever is there to try to normalize relations.

It's an interesting series that tries to balance action with intrigue, character exploration, and politics. Naturally, the larger powers of earth (The US, Russia, and China) are all greedily eyeing the prospect of easy access to a new, undeveloped land full of resources to exploit, and even elements within Japan's own government see this development as a way to advance their own agendas. Meanwhile the Lords, Kings, and Emperor on the other side of the gate are at a loss as to what to do against an enemy that seems to wield thunder, fire, and death at even the lowest ranks of their army - those who haven't seen it first hand can't possibly conceive of an enemy that strong, and those that see battle with it first hand usually die quickly in a hail of bullets or artillery. It makes for an interesting "worlds collide" type story.

Of course, it's not without its drawbacks. Some of the female character design choices are so stereotypically japanese-tropish that it almost borders on problematic, particularly where the gothic-lolita demigoddess reaper that gets hot and bothered by combat is concerned. The main character, a minor officer in the SDF, is about as Mary-Sue as you can get. He's a lazy otaku that keeps getting commendations and promotions for doing pretty much what anyone would have done in his situation, except oh did we mention he went to Ranger school? Oh yeah, and I guess we forgot to mention he's special forces, too. And every female ends up wanting him. Etc.

I'm a little less than halfway through, and I looked to see if another season is coming out, but unfortunately it looks like the anime may have run out of source material. Apparently the light novels upon which the anime is based starts wandering off into tangential side stories and whatnot at that point, so there's no more story to draw from, yet, and the anime will have to wait until the author stops doing this "Dunc and Egg" BS and gets back to brass tacks.

But if you're looking for something easy to watch between other major time investments, this is probably a decent choice.

Would you like me to move your post to the TV thread? :awesome:
I'll post it there too. I stand behind my shameful internet mistakes and try not to delete things.

Well, there was the picture with the Sailor Moon dress and the donkey, and while more on topic, that's never going to be seen again...

So, that'd be the "Fantasy" element you mentioned.

Sekirei

Ok... this is some sort of hybrid mix of pokemon and highlander. Only instead of people miscast against ethnicities or animals that repeatedly speak their own name, this show has naked. Lots and lots of naked. Boobs. That are naked. Also pacing problems. Nothing will happen for 3 episodes and then suddenly one episode will have ALL THE DEVELOPMENTS. Which are also naked. With giant boobs.

And let's milk the same 4 jokes as many times as possible. Naked.

Also 99% of all battle damage is focused on clothing. Especially the chest area. That is, when clothing is actually being worn. Which is less than half the time. And if you want to demonstrate how utterly one fighter is dominating another, their ultimate attack will vaporize the target's clothes entirely. Strangely enough, though, skin will never suffer anything worse than small bruises or papercuts.

There's an interesting story buried in there, ok, but speaking as a die hard Highschool DxD fan, this seems egregious. If you ask me, there should be some sort of penalty for this much sexualized nakedness in a non-porn. Because that's just teasing.

Gonna watch the whole damn thing, though.

A Sister's All you Need. Excuse me while I go into DA SMASH mode. Totally unsatisfying absolutely nothing got resolved non-ending. ARRGGHH.

Recovery of an MMO Junkie

I feel like I was snookered. On the surface it looked like a farcical deconstruction of the "we are all friends in an online game" anime trope that has become so prevalent in recent years, but it's not. It's yet another by-the-numbers invocation of said trope. In fact, there's no "Recovery" at all. The title led me to believe there might be some "net geek trying to reacclimate to the real world" comedy going on, but really it's about a woman quitting her corporate job, and real life in general, to immerse herself in online gaming every waking moment. An extraordinary set of circumstances puts her in a guild with the few people she has contact with in real life, unbeknownst to all involved, and then the story is them discovering that, and how it affects them.

I mean... it's not the worst thing I've ever watched (by far), but I didn't find it all that satisfying either. At least it was mercifully short, with only 11 half-hour episodes. And one thing that I definitely can say is that the pacing does not drag. Most animes like this would stretch out the "are they gonna find out? Will they? WON'T they?" drama/tension for as long as possible, usually to a point that beggars belief, but in this show the players all connect dots and recognize patterns as quickly as real people would (even if they're socially awkward to a staggering degree), and so the plot progresses at a rather brisk pace, which is kind of refreshing given how ingrained "filler" is in this industry. A little more comedy relief might have been nice, though.

So, while I don't enthusiastically recommend it or anything, it also didn't irritate me like a lot of other shows with more mainstream success have (I'm looking at you, Sword Art Online and .hack). It doesn't take big risks and it doesn't break new ground, but it does avoid a lot of the common pitfalls, and one thing that is a big plus in my book is that it doesn't end with a return to status quo, even if there are still loose ends that indicate it wants a second season. Who knows, if it gets one, I might even watch it.

Have you tried Log Horizon? I've heard good things about. It avoids a lot of the overwrought drama of the previous two.
