*sighs, turns over "DAYS SINCE LAST MASS SHOOTING IN AMERICA" sign to 0*

Privilege. When you have never been in a position where you wanted to exercise your freedom but couldn’t, then you will have a hard time understanding why someone else might consider it essential while it doesn’t seem like a big deal to you.

What kind of privilege would make you think you could breath water?

And that's too much % to just be the people who have enough money (and their own private forces)...

That's just straight up delusion, or a lack of education (i hope).

Keep in mind that this probably wasn't a yes or no question. Some of those 6 - 8% may have said it was "very important" instead of "essential" and while I see the huge gulf between those two answers, a lot of people just don't understand what freedom of speech is, and why it matters if you're in a "good" country.

Nah. Gas made the same joke on Empyrion the other night when someone suffocated to death.
I remember that, but I thought it was starvation, not asphyxiation.
But I think that was also while my phone was transitioning from WiFi to cellular after leaving the store, so I know I missed a few sentences.

Five dead, others 'gravely injured' in shooting at Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis

A shooter is in custody, police said. Police would not name the suspect or say what type of weapon was used. (Baltimore Sun)

Wasn't Milo Younnalis (sp) saying yesterday that he couldn't wait for journalists to be gunned down?
Yes. He was. So it should be unsurprising when the shooter is revealed to be a 20 year old white guy.

I'm hearing that the editor of the paper is one of the fatalities.

He played the classic “I was doing it to troll you, guys!” defense that I used to see 12 year olds post on the internet.

Dickhead.

Trump literally just pointed at the press days ago and called them the enemies of America.

The NRA puts out videos all but explicitly threatening the press.

Milo is human garbage.

Etc..

But the shooter was clearly deranged/mentally unstable and they're completely innocent of any form of instigation or lowering thresholds.
Unless he's colored, of course, in which case he's a terrorist or making a political attack.

Guess Oprah was right... all you have to do is wish for it enough...

Hannity says he doesn't want to play the blame game with guns, and then blames Maxine Waters and Obama
Well neither of those people are guns, so he's just being consistent....

And then, of course, he blames the victims.
Hey, if they just let everyone lie and harass people without calling them out, they wouldn't have had any problems...

Why we should treat violence like an epidemic.

"But when it comes to violence, the discussion is often underpinned by an assumption that this is an innate and immutable behaviour and that people engaging in it are beyond redemption. More often than not, solutions have been sought in the criminal justice system, such as through tougher sentencing.

Enforcement alone, however, often does not work. In 2005, Karyn McCluskey, principal analyst for Strathclyde Police, wrote a report pointing out that traditional policing was not actually reducing violent crime. In search of a different approach, McCluskey’s team, led by her and her colleague John Carnochan, began pulling together evidence on the drivers of violence."
