From the project page you linked I see no reason whatsoever to have a Chemistry degree, but whatever. Would it HELP? Maybe, but it's a f'n software project. You need expertise on what fields are needed and things like that, but that's not the same as coordinating the software project itself. Just ask
@Tinwhistler, I'm sure he'd agree with me that somebody who is an "expert" in the field is NOT the ideal person to be managing the software project. Some people are multi-disciplinary, great, but a masters in the Chemical part of it? That is NOT needed.
