For 18 years now, I have been searching, waiting, and hoping for a sequel or spiritual successor to Rollcage, a combat racing game for the PS1. No one seems to remember this game. But my brother and I played both games in the series religiously. It combined the combat of a kart racer with the speed of "legit" racing games like Gran Turismo and Need for Speed, and throws in the gimmick of driving on walls and ceilings. Rollcage Stage II came out in 2000, so I've seriously been waiting and searching for 18 years. I kept my PS1 until just two years ago, solely so I could continue to play Rollcage Stage II.
I have been searching and searching, and about 4 days ago, I found out that the developers behind it got back together, formed a new company, got the same composers from the second game, and produced a new game called GRIP: Combat Racing that combines the combat of a kart racer with the speed of "legit" racing games like Gran Turismo and Need for Speed, and throws in the gimmick of driving on walls and ceilings. It is, in every way but name, a sequel to Rollcage. And it comes out November 6th and I'm so fucking excited you wouldn't believe it. Early access is already available on steam. And has been for like a year. Why I never heard about this until a couple days ago I couldn't tell you.
And will it have split screen Multiplayer? You betcha. This couldn't be better.
Here is rollcage, Rollcage stage II, and Grip, compared side by side at 7:30. It's totally, 100% the same game.
