Minor victory thread

By opening it and attempting to deal with the yogurt I forgot about.
you open the door and it begins to speak like some demented tub of parkay,

"In the first age, in the first battle, when the shadows first lengthened, one stood. Burned by the embers of Armageddon, his soul blistered by the fires of Hell and tainted beyond ascension, he chose the path of perpetual torment. In his ravenous hatred he found no peace; and with boiling blood he scoured the Umbral Plains seeking vengeance against the dark lords who had wronged him. He wore the crown of the Night Sentinels, and those that tasted the bite of his sword named him... the Gas Bandit."

I can't really justify a new computer right now, but I did get to upgrade my current system.

I've gone from 8GB of RAM to 16GB, 128GB SSD to 500GB, and a 1TB HDD to 6TB.

Games now load and close faster, I have room to install large games on my SSD, and I shouldn't have to worry about storage space for a while.

Went to a retirement party for the lab manager of my Postdoc lab. I haven't seen them (the lab) since late 2018, so there's a whole new batch of grad students and postdoc. When my old boss introduced me to the group, one postdoc got excited and said that he is using one of my papers like a road map for his project. That was nice to hear even though I am not in academia any more.

Pez next week… “I’m out of storage space again.” ;)

I swear it seems like programs now just go out and gobble a certain percentage of available storage.

My package with 64GB ECC RAM (2x32) just arrived yesterday (was on the porch when I left for work this morning at 7:30a). Still need to open the box to verify they didn't send me the wrong product (and also wait for it to finish coming up to room temp), then I just need to schedule time to install it (since I also need to rotate my heatsink 90 degrees and I promised myself I would do that the next time I took the computer apart).
So probably my next day off (Wed) OR it'll just sit there and wait until I also upgrade my GPU because I'm lazy like that and the current 16GB will be "good enough" until I finally buy a new GPU.

so, an update on the American Airlines Saga detailed in this rant.

AA did not put me through retention and just happily cancelled my card. But I guess someone noticed, because within days, they wrote me and gave me 5000 airline miles for my troubles. 5000 airline miles is like $50 in real money when you convert it to flights/etc. So, fuck those guys. I found the Department of Transportation's website for complaints exactly like this. In much more polite language, DoT lets me know they're about to crawl up American Airlines' ass. (Oh, and @GasBandit check out that sweet phone power level, lol)

A few days later, guess what?

I guess they found it in their heart to issue me a refund after all. :D

Now check and see if your 5000 point “gift” has been reversed.

Pretty good day at work today. I got my vpn access to our biggest client reinstated, after months of drama about it - so now I can remotely help them fix their crap again when they run into it. So that's nice.

Also finally kicked the physical security department out of our rack build area, where they'd been squatting. That's actually a pretty substantial victory - they've been the execs' "golden child" department for the last year or so that got everything they wanted, so to reclaim space from them is quite an accomplishment.

Well, I took the day off to see the family away and the furnace guys finally decided they were going to service my God damned furnace today. So now it's just me, and the hum of the furnace. Despite all the setbacks this was a good Christmas and a good reminder that shit doesn't matter, family does.

Nope! Done.
Went a lot faster since I was able to keep the CPU backplate from falling back through the board, which meant I didn't have to remove the whole MLB and everything, just the HSF. No obvious difference from all the extra RAM, probably won't see any real difference until the GPU and monitor get upgraded, but that's for another day, like when there are finally decent GPUs to be had.

Just got home from seeing Jeff Dunham and all the guys in the boxes tonight. Had fun, lots of laughs, really happy I wasn’t “that guy” sitting in the front row.

Dunham's act hasn't exactly evolved, but I still thought he was funny nearly 25 years ago. I also thought Jeff Foxworthy was funny back then. I still think Foxworthy has great bits. Dunham will not ever be named one of the greats like Carlin, Pryor, or Bill Burr, but he's doing something that folks like. Comedically, I am not fond of puppets. His act is dated.

I am not right-leaning, but I have no problem with Achmed other than it's a bit stale. I am certain that Ricky Gervais (who I agree a lot with) and Dunham don't agree on much, but the criticism of Islam is fine with me. Though Gervais is more critical of other religions, I guess. He's very funny too IMO.

Yeah, my "wow" was that he seemed to be using the same material as from what I remember ~25 years ago.

But then I guess Gallagher was smashing watermelons up until his very last show.

Had a good gig last night. It was a friend of my wife. So her coworkers were all there. Everyone had fun so she's going to get a lot of props at work. Afterwards we hit a late night McDonald's, slept in, I got up & made waffles for breakfast.

It's was a good day.
I, for one, am relieved you didn't even have to use your AK.

I had the trial run of my doctorate defense today.
And it... Didn't suck? Like it was stressful as fuck, but the feedback I got was good and mostly expected. And none of the questions were absurd.

So now I have to edit the thesis and get it polished. Then get my advisor's approval. Then defend formally. And then I'm done.

So close.
