Firefly - why did FOX kill this masterpiece in such an untimely fashion?

The girlfriend and I are just watching Firefly. Me for the 3rd time, she enjoys the series the very first time. And she loves it.

And the question rose again: Why did those faithless basterds of aliance scum at FOX cancle this jewel amongst TV-Shows? Why did they such a cruel thing to us, who were mesmerized by the sheer beauty of the title song, brought to tears of joy by the cast?

Why oh why haven't the people at FOX responsible for the cancelation of this show been lynched? And by lynched I mean dismembered, having their skin ripped from their flesh and then bathed in a barrel of tabasco sauce?

Okay browncoats, show me your fanboyisch love for this greatest show that has ever been produced!

Don't take me too serious, I'm just sulking, because the girlfriend and I are allready at episode 12 now, with only two more and the movie to go. It's just so unfair. We're enjoying the hell out of this show, but with the knowledge that it has been cancelled and we only have so little to watch before us, that makes me sad.

Oh, and come to speak of the movie... I am sooooo looking forward to her reaction the "Walsh-Scene", hehehe...

It's a good show, and it was a shame that it didn't work out! But a masterpiece? No. Fox execs aren't monsters, they just don't give some shows time to gain more viewers like other networks have done in the past (Seinfeld, Cheers, 30 Rock)

I have to object on this one. In my humble opinion, this show had everything a masterpiece needed.
Cast: Very well casted actors for their corresponding roles, played with "heart". And the chemistry between the actors was just perfect.
Story: Very promising. The backstory with the alliance, what they did to river, the reavers etc... the Show was just in the beginning and wasn't even given time to play out the story.
Special F/X: Not too many, not too little and the scenario was something really new, really fresh.
Sound: Wow... I just love the music of this show! It has something so familiar yet new, and really catches on.

In my opinion (read that again: in my opinion) it had everything what a masterpiece required. For me, I was immediately hooked with the show after seeing the pilot, and that's something only a masterpiece of a show can achieve.

Oh well... here we go again, arguing over personal tastes.

Actually, I think you're arguing the same point. Firefly was a good show to be sure, but not yeat a masterpiece, much in the way Buffy season one was a good show, but pales in comparison with later seasons. The show had great potential, and could have turned into a masterpiece. It wasn't given time.

I think that Fox is THE network when it comes to "brilliant but cancelled" shows.

Firefly
The Critic (yes, I know it was second hand from ABC, but they only gave it one season)
Futurama
Family Guy (yes, the brilliant in this show is HIGHLY debatable)
Arrested Development
Etc...

It's like they WANT to be known as the good show killers. Maybe that's why they're giving Dollhouse a second season, just to try and break that streak of letting money slip right through their fingers.

Joss wanted to make a sci fi drama, Fox wanted a bang bang action shootemup with a dash of comedy, made him change some elements of the show and air them out of order. Thus, it got canned right when it was really starting to get good.

It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of these series.

Awhile back, my fiancee asked me why I kept watching the same episodes over the years on my PC. I challenged her and said... "Tell you what, let's start watching the show together and if you don't get addicted to the show by episode 6... I'll do the dishes and laundry for the entire month."

To this she agreed. She started watching and did her damnest not to show that by episode 5 she was in love with the series. In the end, she became a huge fan herself. Jane cracks her up every time he speaks.

It's unfair on what happened with this show and I have stopped watching anything Fox related for years. I'm glad a movie was done but it's too little, too late. I would have enjoyed if the show has a solid run of at least 3-4 seasons and a sexy long run of 6-7. But.. 1... really? Shows come into their own by the 2 to 3rd season. I doubt the numbers were that bad.

This is why you shouldn't do business with Fox. Fuck them.

All three shows you compared it to had multiple seasons. Even if a single season of those shows sold better, they had a longer time to build an audience. Have other single season shows done as well as Firefly?

I'm Canadian and I hate Americana crap... and I loved this show. If you plan to watch it, watch the first few episodes (at least 4-5) before you give up on it. It gets better on the 2nd part of the show.

FOX doesn't like Reality TV because of ratings... they like Reality TV because it's cheap as hell to make, since you don't have to pay any actors. It's one of the reasons Reality TV all but stopped in France... there was a court ruling that made networks fork up pay for any Reality TV stars on shows they filmed there.

I can't remember if it was Canadian or American, but I had hoped that the reality show where the children were given complete run of a small town would be the end of reality tv. I was hoping that citizens everywhere would see it, stare in horror at what they had become, what they were doing to their own children, and abandon all reality programming as penance.

The movie really bothered me. I loved the show but so much of the movie just seemed....I dunno, terrible I guess is the word I'm going for. The guy with his own planet that can monitor every bit of data in the solar system or whatever it was he was supposed to be was easily the worst thing in it.

The movie was far from excellent. It was horrible, a neat way of seeing everyone back together playing their roles in a mediocre film. The assassin was by far the most entertaining part of the movie, great acting.
