What's the backstory?

I think he was a solider in Iraq when a car exploded nearby, and he got burned pretty all over it. The girl is his high school sweetheart

It is all I can remember, I pretty sure there is more sadness in it.

She divorced him pretty soon after. If you look at her face, you can already see that. And him. The poor man. To have everything taken from you, and yet to still be alive and have it taken from you every day thereafter.

I still think it was a bold step for them to actually address Mr Hooper's death on the show.
