-Red Cliff - Another one no one will agree with, but watching the legendary battle of Chi Bi, as directed by John Woo, was absoutely breath-taking
Any English translation yet?

The copy that I saw at a friend's house had English subtitles that were supposedly pretty accurate.

Every time Guan Yu stroked his beard, I cheered like a moron.

Your sig reminded me: 3:10 to Yuma definitely on the list.

The A.V. Club posted it's list of the 50 best films of the decade. It's pretty interesting! The list that I'm preparing shares several items with theirs. Frankly, though, I'd like to see some lists from the individual film writers, rather than a collaborative list. Here's the list

I hope those of you who haven't posted are working hard on your lists!

Check out the #1 on their list. I'm a fucking genius.

But most of those films were not popular. We all know the buying public is what matters in concerns of taste.

I was just going to post this. Interesting list. Now I really have to see Spirited Away.

It's also worth noting that the first comment in the HUGE comment thread is from Scott Tobias (the best of the film staff imo) giving his personal top ten. I ain't readin through that entire fucking thread to find if the other folks posted theirs, but here is Mr. Tobias' list:

1. 25TH HOUR
2. IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE
3. BEFORE SUNSET
4. YI YI
5. ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND
6. NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
7. THERE WILL BE BLOOD
8. ZODIAC
9. DOGVILLE
10. WALL-E

I wish I'd have seen some of them. I like the way they gave a synopsis of each one.

I love that 25th Hour is getting a lot of love (A.O. Scott revealed it as his #9 of the decade on At The Movies) especially since it got middling reviews when it came out, I think mostly due to it being very misunderstood. It's a very worthy pick, though I don't think it'll make my list.

ESotSM really redeemed Jim Carrey. Like most people, I needed to perpetually reassure myself that that was in fact Carrey. Sure, I know he did The Majestic, but even there he couldn't get away from the schtick. But beyond that, the film was just so visually interesting.

Eternal Sunshine is massively overrated.
I know, there's all that weird shit that doesn't make sense and Jim Carrey doesn't fart or hump an inanimate object once[/QUOTE]

Yeah, I know. I totally hate movies that are introspective and treat the visual medium as an art piece instead of a palette for gauzy CGI and one-liners, too.

Shit, I'm trying to put a list together, and I totally haven't seen some important films I probably should have, and it's still hard. Million Dollar Baby, Pitch Black, and Serenity are most likely going to be on there, though.

10. Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
9. The Wrestler
8. The Queen
7. Gladiator
6. Chocolat
5. Kill Bill Vol 1
4. Pirates of the Carribean: Curse of the Black Pearl
3. Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
2. Saint Ralph
1. Conspiracy (2001)

I wanna see 25th Hour and Before Sunset since I continually see them pop up on shit like this, and I feel left out :(
I like 25th Hour, and I don't usually like Spike Lee movies. Ed Norton is pretty great in it. Although, I don't get the major love for the movie. Nice movie, but not great, IMO.

1. Conspiracy (2001)
What about Downfall? I really liked Conspiracy, but Downfall was fantastic.

I just want to take this opportunity to let everyone know that THIS IS PERFECTLY OKAY. No one who doesn't get paid for it would have the time to see all 5000+ movies that have come out in the past 10 years, and even those that do get paid for it have trouble. Just think about the movies that stood out to you. :)

Here is the list I made of movies, broken down by year (alphabetical order from there)

2000:

Gladiator
High Fidelity
Memento
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Snatch

2001:

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Shrek
Spirited Away
Zoolander

2002:

Death to Smoochy
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Spider-Man

2003:

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

2004:

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Garden State
Hellboy
The Incredibles
Spider-Man 2

2005:

Batman Begins
Good Night, and Good Luck
Serenity
Sin City

2006:

Idiocracy
The Prestige
Stranger Than Fiction
Thank You for Smoking
V for Vendetta

2007:

1408
300
There Will Be Blood

2008:

The Dark Knight
Get Smart
Hellboy II: The Golden Army
Iron Man

2009:

Coraline
Watchmen

I'll see if I can prune this list to just 10, but I will probably lump series together just so I can save a few spaces. :D

Edit: and these are just the movies I really liked. I left some off that were good, but I didn't enjoy as much for one reason or another.

I'm settling in to my top 10. Once I finalize it, I'm going to make some really cool header images and start writing about them. You dudes will get a POST when January comes.

From my list, take out 8 Mile. Move everything down and put my new movie into the #3 spot.

#3: Precious. Wow. If you can, see. this. movie.
