Conan O'Brien Leaving (AKA Fuck NBC)

Wasn't Leno supposed to have retired this year anyway?

I like Conan O'Brien, just not his show. He seems like some one cool to talk to over beer and darts.

Leno is just kinda like the mildly funny Uncle. The new show format was horrible. It should have been a Wednesday night special, (or any other single weekday) to keep it fresh.

NBC - Man are they stupid?

I hope that Conan gets a talk show at Fox that competes with Jay Leno, it would serve NBC right after all their fear of Leno turning on them that Conan would be the one to take down their late night viewers.

Where ever Conan goes I will follow. I will watch, I will laugh and I will let people know.

NBC is very, very dumb to do this.

I agree. He always seemed like the real guy who accidentally got famous. Why are they sucking up so hard to Jay Leno, who is only occasionally funny in order to boot a guy who's consistently funny? I guess Leno still carries more clout with the public. Whine though we may, I'm guessing NBC's marketing guys know more about the US viewership than I do.

This is NBC we are talking about so I doubt that their marketing people have any clue about what the american public wants

Dear Conan,

We sincerely hope that the situation between you and NBC will resolve itself peacefully, so we may continue to be entertained by your giant Irish antics, frightened screams at wild animals, predictions for the year 3000 and other hilarious happenstances we have enjoyed in Late Night and now with Tonight Show.

Just so you know, just give us a word and Finland will send its polar bear cavalry to storm the NBC headquarters.

I hate NBC for doing this, they move the guy and his entire family across the entire continent and then screw him over 6 months later!? Fuck them, especially cause they're using a loophole in his contract that said the show's time slot could be moved, something put in basically for sporting events... now their position is that they're not breaching the contract cause his show would still be called "The Tonight Show".

Fuck that, The Tonight Show has been at that time since the days of Carson, I agree with Conan's statement saying that moving it is pretty much killing it. Tonight is supposed to be on after the local news, not after that greedy chinned bastard being unfunny for half an hour.

Now there's talk that NBC will prevent Conan from hosting any other late night show if he leaves them until his contract expires which is more than a year from now. Fuck them two times.

He's already EVISCERATING them in his monologue... and pretty much the rest of the show, he even got help from Gary Oldman last night.

It was a joke, but Simpsons doesn't really have much to compete with.

It would be incredibly hard to gain much of an audience competing with Leno and Letterman though.

Leno should just crash one of his 42,000 cars and die already. Greedy bastard.

I thought the appeal of Conan was that he's the only one that consistently attracts the young demographic, whereas both Leno and Letterman's audience is mainly square in the 40+ bracket.

They screwed Conan though. With Jay having a show before the news the people loyal to Jay just tuned out after that. Conan never had a chance to get Jay's ratings.

Yeah, but last I heard NBC was ok with that because Conan brought in the most sought after demographic, the 18-40s

Besides, not even Leno got Leno's old ratings, that's a big part of why they're doing all this, they didn't like the ratings of their "low budget" response to primetime.

Screw NBC. If they keep this crap up, I'll end up despising them more than the fox network.

The Tonight Show guy that handles the website and has been on a few sketches jsut tweeted that we should "hold on to our seats" for tonight's show... I predict heavy further eviscerating of NBC plus maybe even an on-air announcement.....

Leno holds clout with the older audience. Fucking Baby Boomers ruin late night TV as well as everything else.

This is exactly right. The Jay Leno show competed with the Tonight Show, and split the demographic. Honestly, if you were a fan of the Tonight Show and got the same dose of it from the Jay Leno show, why would you stay tuned in and watch an hour longer rather than just go to bed an hour earlier. NBC should have kicked Leno to the curb. 100% guaranteed if they did that, Conan would have been just fine. Fuck, they didn't even give Conan a full year to build an audience...

If Conan would have agreed to a 12:05 timeslot, you'd still see the same effect. People would watch Leno's half hour and tune out. There's only so much 'talk show' one can take. Who the hell would watch talkshows from 10 to 12 under the old timeslot anyway?

When is Letterman retiring? Dudes gotta be 80 by now. I know it isn't gonna happen, but that would be funny as hell if Conan jumped ship and took over Letterman's spot.

Here's an official comment by Conan on the matter.

People of Earth:

In the last few days, I’ve been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I’ve been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I’ve been absurdly lucky. That said, I’ve been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn’t the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn’t matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.

Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it’s always been that way.

Yours,

Conan

I believe I, and scores of others including David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel, have made my position perfectly clear.

Fuck NBC and fuck Jay Leno.

He's kinda taking Conan's side, it's more of an anti NBC and Leno side. Last night he was joking about all the people NBC and Leno have screwed over on their late night lineup.

Letterman and Conan have always been on friendly terms... Letterman went even so far as to appear as a guest on one of Conan's first ever Late Night shows, even though he had just left NBC in the most unfriendly of manners. He has always said he's glad it was Conan who inherited Late Night from him... i've never really been a fan of Dave's show, but he has always been a class act.

Letterman's production compnay, Worldwide Pants produced Late Night with Conan (as well as produces Craig Furguson's show).

What, no it wasn't. Late Night was Broadway Video (Lorne Michael's production company) until Conan took over everything with his Conaco production company.

Jimmy Kimmel also did his whole show in a fake chin and silver hair as "Jay Leno". It was pretty funny, even though i'm not the biggest Kimmel fan. One of the gags was: "ABC - always bump conan"
