That was brilliant. It concerns me a little that people take Beck seriously.

People take Glenn Beck seriously? I thought he was another media joke/ parody of an actual human being like Ann Coulte, Bill O'Riley, or Rush Limbaugh.

I think there is a portion of society that does, yeah. Most of us rational types tend to blow him off as some weird form of entertainment. Don't underestimate the number of weirdos who take him seriously, though.

Not that I am trying to defend Beck, but they are a hell of a lot more folks that take Jon Stewart seriously. They actually get all their news/info from him, and believe what is coming out of his mouth to be the truth. Neither have any credentials. Both have teams of writers and producers telling them what to say.

I actually used to listen to Beck on the radio before he had a tv show. It honestly was funny. It was much like the Daily Show. He has slowly started to get more and more melodramatic, and a bit of a alarmist now that he has a tv show. I guess the crazier you are, the higher ratings you get.

I've never watched Glenn Beck (I can't remember the last time I watched actual TV, thanks internet), but I do have this to say about John Stewart -

He's funny, sure. But he's a coward. He makes forays into politics with the satirical ad hominem as his shiniest sword, and when people call him on his shenanigans, he whips out his magic shield - "hey, I'm just a comedian, YOU'RE supposed to be the journalist." He's having his cake and eating it too. And if he's "just a comedian," why does he focus 99% of his goofy-faced pseudointellectual passive-aggressiveness solely on the likes of dubya or Beck? It's because he has an agenda... and in our current age of snark-trumps-all, the mushbrain demographic eats it up because "he's funny so he must be right and smart and true and I'd vote for him hell I'd let him have me if he wanted." Nevermind that he's got enough writers behind him to populate a couple baseball teams.

Isn't that the point? He's right. His job is to make fun of these people, not write policy. I mean, you could substitute any media icon of any party in that last paragraph and it's still true. Substitute "vitriol" for "snark", etc. He uses comedy instead of snipe attacks or pure anger like O'Reilly or Beck. The thing that makes him better at his job is that he never claims to be anything more. In fact, he comes out and says he doesn't intend to do anything more.

"He's got writers!" Is this a thing, now? If I want to shit on someone's day, I should pull this line out? Cause I could probably make use of it if it is:

Palin writes a sentence: "She's got writers!"
Dubya makes war: "He's got advisers!"
Bill Gates announces an iPhone killer: "He's got geeks!"
I get laid: "He's got hookers!"

But he's lying, is my point. He does have an agenda, he IS trying to influence policy, just as much as O'Reilly or Beck.

It's been "a thing" for a long time now, people on this very board have long been using it to disparage Rush Limbaugh.

It's a stupid thing. Everyone has writers. Mine just happen to be on strike. Fucking unions.

100% agree with Fade. People that aim against John Stewart are just whining. Though, I will point out, it's just as stupid to get your news from The Daily Show then from Beck, Limbaugh or Fox News.

Stewart is funny as hell, but he's an entertainer. So is Beck, so is Limbaugh and so is O'Reilly. I try to get my news from the BBC as a rule though >_>

I did too. I still can't quite wrap my mind around the fact that the blubbering piece of shit is the same guy I used to think was funny made his point rather intelligently even if I didn't agree with his conclusion he at least made sense of himself.

Now adays he is just a ranting raving idiotic bastard who says whatever fool thing pops into his head.

Colbert > Stewart.

Mostly because Colbert's satire and impersonation is a lot more entertaining that Stewart's "aren't Republicans morons" approach.

That's something John pointed out in an interview, though. The jokes are based on the news. Understanding the joke kinda requires people to understand where the joke is and be somewhat informed on the news.

So yeah, it is dumb to get the news from The Daily Show, but I have no problem having Stewart mocking Republicans and Democrats when they act like blithering imbeciles.

It seems to me that it's now all "aren't TV people morons." And I'm getting tired of that because it's so inward looking. As annoying as movies about movie making and novels about novelists.

Beck, Limbaugh, and O'Reilly are news pundits. They're supposed to be reporters; not entertainers.

That is a good point, Krisken. He spends a good chunk of each episode making fun of Dems, too. I mean, he's clearly left biased, and makes no attempt to hide it. But he will tear into democrats--even guests--too.

Supposed to be isn't the same thing as is. /Bill Clinton

People, it's JON Stewart, no H. U_U

That being said... Jon's left leaning is obvious, yes, but that doesn't mean he stays his tongue when it's time to rip the Democrats a new one. That's actually what I like about the Daily Show, they rip EVERYONE a new one, much like South Park does. They mock white, gay, black, asian, republican, democrat, libertarian. And that's healthy... people NEED to see the flaws in everyone, so they can do something about it.. or at the very least be aware of them.

My dad takes all of these people seriously.

Every time I come home I have to listen to Beck, O'Riley, Limbaugh, Hannity, Savage (as in: that guy that isn't allowed to go to the UK due to being a racist scumbag), and others of their ilk all day every day. It is why I don't come home very often outside of holidays.

I use it to disparage Limbaugh not because he's got writers but because the ones I know personally are comedy writers! While I realize Stewart has comedy writers, too, he presents his as comedy and Rush presents his as facts rather than comedic opinion.

And THAT'S why Limbaugh gets disparaged for using writers.

No, Stewart presents them as implied "funny" truth until someone calls him on it and then he whips out the "just comedy" shield. And that's why he's a coward.

Dude, he calls the show "fake news" for a reason. When has he EVER said he was more than a comedian?

You just don't like him because he tears your arguments apart like tissue paper.

The one clip where I saw him use comedy as a "shield", the people interviewing him didn't say his opinions were wrong, they just said he wasn't doing anything about it, to which he replied, "that's not my job".

You just don't like him because he tears your arguments apart like tissue paper.
And does it in an entertaining way.

I watch The Daily Show because sometimes I need to laugh at politics, otherwise I can't stay sane. I hate Beck, O'Riley, and Limbaugh not because they are conservative, but that they work by ENRAGING the audience towards their causes by spreading such vitriol. It further polarizes our nation to "us and them", and if they had a liberal "equivalent" of the Beck show I would hate it just as much.

The guys at Weekend Update are cowards too!!
yeah! As well as Conan, Leno, Letterman, Fallon, Kilbourn, and Kimmel. Yellow bastards!

That's false on a number of levels:

1) he's never addressed "my arguments."
2) he "says" fake news, but he what he DOES is actually issues advocacy and ad hominem for the specific purpose of advancing a democrat agenda in a funny manner, as is clearly shown by the bias that he displays so thick that even Wonkette called him on it. If I stab you repeatedly in the throat while making a goofy face and saying "I'm not murdering you, I'm just being funny!" it doesn't get me off the hook either.

Did you really just compare satire with murder? Really?

Murder = Opinion.

Even for you that's reaching, Gas.

You'd get your own show but people would be too busy saying, "Daww!" at the ewok to take you seriously.
