The Sound of Nerd Masturbation Takes the Earth (Whedon Avengers)

Much as I loved Serenity, I don't think a movie of this type would work with Joss at the helm.

They should have gotten Jon Favreau or Louis Leterrier.

Jon Favreau turned it down and Louis Letterier is a terrible filmmaker

Huh... that's... weird.

Well, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Serenity was pretty awesome AAAANND look at Jon Favreau, who would have thought HE could helm a movie like Iron Man so awesomely?

Now see, I'd heard that Kathryn "Academy Award Winning Hurt Locker" Bigelow was in the running.

I had kind of hoped she would get this, instead.

For as good as Whedon is, he's not really all that big of a seller. FOX screws him over more than polygamist who says his wife is the only one and his movies (well, movie) are not big sellers. He's an internet darling for quirky but starting to recycle itself writing. Seriously, you can almost smell a beloved character death a mile away. He might have gotten screwed by FOX, but his shows keep getting cancelled, regardless.

That said, I think if he gave us something more in-line with his run of Astonishing X-Men, then I think we might have a winner.

I know Letterier doesn't have a great track record, but he's at least established that he can do a good superhero/action hero film.

Joss doesn't really do action sequences especially well. The fights/gunbattles in Serenity were passable despite Joss, not because of him, and the Avengers is going to have a lot more, with it being a primary focus for large parts of the film.

With Joss, all we can look forward to is the Wasp turned into a mousy little girl, and lots of standing around exchanging witty banter or monumentous observations on the nature of man's cruelty to man. None of which is necessarily bad, but it wouldn't really be an Avengers movie.

That said, I think Joss could make the "Hawkeye mouths off to Cap" scenes really pop.

This news pleases me. Mostly because the idea of an Avengers film seems so crazydrunkwrong why not throw in Joss? I just hope he casts Summer Glau and Amy Acker, in every role.

Trust me, TeKeo, I wasn't trying to make an argument in favor of Whedon as director here.

You do realize Whedon is not writing, right?
We don't know who is going to be writing. Directors can have a huge influence on the script. Hell, it's something that Joss fans always claim when one of his scripted films bombs in the box office.

Jon Favreau is going to be the exec producer, and has a history of inserting himself into the process, so hopefully Joss can learn.

I know, was just pointing out why Letterier is still a better choice, despite Transporter 2.

His Fox shows don't last, but Buffy lasted like 200 God damn years.

Also, Marvel isn't Fox.

Not liking Joss Whedon's work as a director means I'm a movie snob?

Okay, I can live with that.

I actually don't know what you're talking about. I'm not a fan of Joss Whedon as a writer and I think he's only shown limited talent as a director. As an ideas man, he's great, but as time goes on, his limits in that area continue to show, as well. I hope this movie is good under his direction, though. :)

I know what you mean with that smilie:

I'm on to you.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. I love every Joss Whedon work I've seen/read so far but...he just doesn't seem to be the right dude for this project. I mean, I think he's a fine director and is certainly a better choice than someone like Tim Burton or Uwe Boll (not saying those guys are equals, just that they'd make equally poor Avengers flicks) but he just hasn't worked up to it. A bunch of TV episodes, a medium budget Sci-Fi western, a shoe-string budget short film, and then a big screen blockbuster summer movie. It just doesn't flow. I mean Favreau had at least directed Zathura before making Iron Man.

Oh well. I hope it will be good.

why would we count the Young avengers anyway?! It's the first ever Avengers movie, guys. Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Ant-Man. If they start adding all the spin-offs and shit it'd have to be a 7 hour long movie.

You left out Wasp. You know, the only female founding Avenger.

And Cap didn't even join until like, the 6th issue or somesuch.

:nerd:

I don't know how you can cram all these heroes into a movie and keep it at a reasonable running time, and keep the plot interesting too.

They won't be doing origins, as all the members will have had their own origin film + sequel when Avengers hits the theatres.
