Wait wait wait...ILLINOIS is #47? Illinois?!? Have these people ever followed the fucking news?

This list is total bullshit.

Was... it counting backwards? So 51 is them most corrupt? Seemed like the numbers got higher as you went along...

#1 Tennessee

Public Corruption: 18
Racketeering & Extortion: 11
Fraud Rank: 7
Forgery & Counterfeiting: 5
Embezzlement: 9

#51 New Hampshire

Public Corruption: 49
Racketeering & Extortion: 37
Fraud Rank: 25
Forgery & Counterfeiting: 46
Embezzlement: 39

I think they take the 5 categories and average them. So since Tennessee's number is low, they are more corrupt. I still have trouble believing that Illinois is so far down on the list - or DC. These places are terrible for corruption.

Reading the criteria, they're going by number of CONVICTIONS/ARRESTS in each category... which leads me to two conclusions -

1 is least corrupt while 51 is most,

and

you aren't corrupt if you don't get caught.

Per the Daily Beast.

Tennessee is #1. West Virginia is #31.

31? WTF 31? How is that even remotely possible?

I guess when you're more of a giant Massey mining camp than an actual state you lose a few points. Sigh.

Damn PA is #8 in terms of least corrupt? Oh well, good to see Philly mayors getting pointed out for the scumbags they are.

Wait, no, I'm wrong, I see.. it isn't listing the actual NUMBER of arrests/convictions, it's listing their rank.

So I guess Illinois is just good at it.

I also don't think individuals that partake in white collar crime should be considered corruption. To me corruption is more along the lines of public officials engaged in criminal acts. When it is the private sector it is just Crime.

If there is money involved, there is a chance of corruption.

Money is the root of all evil ;)

It's pretty much common knowledge that WV has been turned into the private domain of Don Blankenship. There are a few voices shouting into the wind, but he's basically said he's too fucking rich for anyone to stop him. And he's mostly right.

How that doesn't rank us higher is beyond me. The criteria is crap.

How are neither NJ or NY not in the top 20? :wtf:

EDIT: How is DC not in the top 30?!!
Because they have corrupt police departments, inspector generals, state accounting offices, and district attorneys that do not investigate or charge the criminal acts.

Wouldn't that make them more corrupt, and thus much higher on the list?[/QUOTE]

Well, not by the criteria of the article. You need a good law enforcement community to prove corruption.

Hey, not in the top 10. How bout that, Mr. Edwards?
Well, things did get better with him in jail.
