NBC Cancels Heroes - She was a fine ship with a fine crew

My god, I'm siding with Mav. The last season was pretty good. Instead of introducing 2 dimensional characters and tossing them away at the whim of a new plot, they actually developed them and had a reason for each of them being there. Hell, they even took past characters which were somewhat 2d and gave them a personality and fleshed out their characters. What could have been a case of ending in the dumps, Heroes last season was pretty good.

CBS is cutting several successful shows this Fall

"Cold Case," "Ghost Whisperer" "Numb3rs," "The New Adventures of Old Christine," "Gary Unmarried," "Miami Medical" and "Accidentally on Purpose."

I've seen a couple of episodes of Numb3rs. I enjoyed the show, but it was on Fridays when I had other things to do.

I guess I should be glad I only ever watched one episode of Heroes. :p

Edit: Can't say I'm too broken up about those other shows, either ...

Community got picked up for another season. I fully expect it to be canceled at the end of season 2. It's just too good to last. (If you haven't seen the Modern Warfare episode, do it. It's brilliant.)

I never really liked Numb3rs. It's just your average cop show, only some guy shows up and spouts stuff vaguely related to math every so often.

There are lots of formula shows, the real issue isn't is it unique, it's are they doing anything interesting or entertaining. Most procedural cop shows (and related procedurals) do nothing for me. The wire kind of ruined me like that.

Yeah, that's a better way of stating it than I did. There really wasn't anything that stood out about Numb3rs.

I never understood the whole "people in the field hating TV shows about what they do" I've worked in offices for years, but that doesn't make me hate the office because it's unrealistic.

I imagine it has to do with people's false expectations of the police force, etc.

That may be but it was too little too late. I watched the show through the whole second season, I watched the beginning of the third season which basically took everything that happened in the second season finale and chucked it out the window, I even tried to watch the fourth season primere and that was atrocious.

They may have turned it around, I do have my doubts but great for them maybe next time they bottle lightning they won't shit in it. I doubt they'll ever get something with as much promise as Heroes but who knows maybe they will be able to write a show worth watching past the first season.

You should try wathing... well, just about anything entertaining, with a firefighter. Eerything from "THAT'S NOT HOW YOU DO CPR!" and "A DEFRIBULATOR WOULD BE USELESS THERE!" to "THAT'S NOT EVEN AN EXPLOSIVE!" or "THAT'S ACTUALLY EXPLOSIVE!" and "JET FUEL BURNS WAY FASTER AND HOTTER THAN THAT!"

Somehow, though, if Arnold Schwarzennegar is in the movie, these factual errors are overlooked.

My favourite is the one that comes up in every action movie ever "That wouldn't work, gasoline won't light from a cigarette." Yes, dad, you've told us this before.

My investigator friends really get pissed at cop shows. They solve cases in an hour that takes real detectives months.
Or even years, but they are aware that it's television and not real life, right?
Law and Order was a bit better about this, by out right stating it things like it was "Trial part 58" or such, clearing showing that it had been going on for a VERY long time. It seems fast, but it's only because we only see the days they actually do something important.

There's also the whole thing about juries expecting every case to be proven with DNA evidence, microfibers, and whatnot, due to CSI. It's actually become such a problem that judges has started asking potential jury members whether or not they think CSI is an accurate representation of police work -- if they do, they're off the list.

As it should be. They should also probably have their licenses taken away as I don't think they would be smart enough to drive. CSI made me pity the people that live in its Las Vegas. The CSI unit there is the ultimate law in that town.

Offices vary dramatically. Police work is something more specific.

My aunt is a nurse and she can't stand Scrubs.

I have this problem with my dad and Top Gun. "That's not what that button does!" "The HUD looks nothing like that!" "Oh come on, you can't use that missile on an F-14!"

And once they solve the crime, it's also their job to make sure the criminals feel bad about it.

It is tempting to say that I think CSI represents real police work just to get out of jury duty though....

Perhaps, but the fact that most intelligent people can easily get out of (and often do get out of) jury duty is one of the reasons our justice system fails us so often.

Seriously. The "motion sensors" episode had me in tears.
At least we still have two unaired episodes to look forward to eventually :)

Community got picked up for another season. I fully expect it to be canceled at the end of season 2.
Especially now that CBS has scheduled Big Bang Theory, the most (inexplicably) popular sitcom currently on TV, against it.

Sorry guys Better Off Ted is my fault. I watched the first season on DVD, and by the time I did the second season was already airing so I decided to wait for the season 2 dvds.

It's a show about geeks and geek culture that both mocks and honors the subject matter. That's why it's popular. Helps that it's funny too.

That is the way I was acting watching Robin Hood yesterday...

Oil don't Explode! a 120 lb. 40 year old woman is not going to string a yew long bow with one hand! There were no landing craft in the middle ages! Christians don't burn the bodies of nobles... etc.

I was totally insufferable to my date.

To my mind Heroes managed to create some really good characters, but ultimately they didn't know what to do with them. Those characters really deserved a better, more thought-out plot.

As imperfect as it was that was the main thing that made the first season as good as it was: there was a clear plot with a beginning, middle and end. From Season 2 on they could never seem to keep characters consistent, both characters and plot lines would come and go with no real rhyme or reason.

Now if you're going to lack any basic coherence in that way, the least you can do is have some action in every episode. But the last season in particular was lacking even that.

So... Heroes is television's answer to Cats?

No in-joke, it's a reference to the fact that all the musical Cats does is introduce characters, with no story to speak of.

That does apply pretty well to Heroes Season 2 onward, with plenty of characters wandering in and out with little rhyme or reason.
