Looks like they set a date for the free to play.

Even though I'll probably play it casually, we should choose a server to play on and post in here our character names.

How does Landroval sound?

Loved the lore, loved the scenery, loved the character classes.

Hated the fact that the engine stutters like mad, even on my system. It was ridiculous. I may reinstall and see if they fixed the engine issues though.

It was interesting when I played, but was in WoW at the time. Now I'm NOT playing WoW (may get back since my old crew all play) in Cataclysm. I might give this a run.

Shegs, best DPS class with good survivability? My hours can be erratic and though I like to group, I don't want to be gimped without a group.

Last time I checked, you wanted Champion (Melee), Hunter (Ranged), or Runekeeper (ranged) if you wanted DPS. However, every class can viably solo on their own, even Minstrels. You can check here for an idea of what each class does though.

I have all five of my characters on the Vilya server, but I've put my account on hiatus until I get a new PC or I go home for winter break, whichever comes first. LOTRO is a lot of fun and ideal for casual gamers.

Plus it has a really nice community, with very little WoWkids. I just need to get my Hunter to 60. I've been 59 forever.

I have been slightly curious about this game from time to time, but the PVP sounded meaningless, and really my guild on Warhammer Online keeps me way too busy to allow me time to get into another MMO.

You play Warhammer Online? Fuck man... I'd never have stopped subbing if I knew we had a Halforums presence there. My guild went belly up because the guild master decided that he'd rather go play Order than slum with the Chaos kids :-(

The PVP in LOTRO isn't meaningless... but it wasn't great ether, when I was playing anyway. It was a lot of fun being able to play as a monster though!

To my knowledge, we don't have a halforums presence there. I'm the only Halforumite there, and I don't affiliate the guild I run with anything having to do with halforums.

Warhammer Online was great. I was sad to stop playing, but at this point I couldn't even try because of my crummy computer graphics card.

I'll probably come back to the game. It really is a great game, and I barely got into the Mirkwood expansion. Never tried the new raid or any of the other new 6-man and 3-man instances that were released with it.

My main is a 65 Rune-keeper on Brandywine.

I have a level 40-something Hobbit Guardian on Brandywine, specializing in Mining and Forestry (Gathering and treating Wood + Hides), plus a few 20's-30's. Not sure if I'll be able to come back, but might as well announce where he is.

Lots of people with inactive characters on different servers. Before it'll get out of hand like it did with DDO it would be good to settle on one server.

Game will be going FTP this week. I'm unsure who's going to give the game a shot or not but I've always wanted to play LOTRO but didn't feel it was worth the 15$ a month fee. The FTP with the option to pay for things is reasonable for me. Thus I'll most likely create a Dwarf or a Hobbit on the Landroval server which is well known for being a roleplay server which will let me get to know some people who'll really give me more immersion to the game and possibly diminish the chance of playing with MMOtards.

Last time I checked, Brandywine was the RP server.

Landroval is the RP server, in terms of popularity.
This be true. Landroval has always been the unofficial RP server.
Brandywine is notable because it is widely thought to be the most populated server.

I got a couple of characters on Brandywine. My wife and I are trying it out (she still haven't created a character cause she is sick :( )

WHY BRANDYWINE

---------- Post added at 12:05 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:02 PM ----------

i wish i can neg rep you but "You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Chibibar again."

fuck

Is the game free to download now too? I may have to try this out. I quit WoW a long time ago (just before the first expansion) and it might be fun to have a game like this where I can pop in and play a bit without wasting my subscription money. Is the game good for really casual players with limited time?

fuck
cause that is where we beta and she likes the name.

You can download the client either hi-res or standard-res.

Note: I try to get my wife more involve in my gaming. While it is night to play with friends, but timing is always bad (i.e. I can't even play any of the P&P RPG games much less L4D2 games lately due to time) my wife and I work at the same place and we car pool together. It is easier to get her into the game and team up to do quest than with my forum-mates. So, sorry Jay, my wife trumps you in terms of choices and availability.

You can neg rep me all you want, I never look at it anyways (until now which is low) oh well. I never really care much for reps.

So yeah... I was taking a look at what they've restricted for free and Premium Players (old subscribers get Premium Status automatically. Lifetimers have free VIP status) and wow... they are making it tough on free players. Gold limited to 2-5 pieces? No Destiny Point use? Have to buy Trait Slots? No Monster Play?
Yea. that is pretty harsh. You can remove cap via purchase (I don't know how much since I got LOTRO for 9$ at Half price and got free 30 day VIP) and you can buy trait slots, but you CAN'T buy monster play. I guess they are limiting that to VIP only.

Side note: I do have DDO (hardly play lately) and LOTRO. I notice that LOTRO is easier to play casually than DDO IMO.

Yeah, like DDO it's really more Free to TRY rather than free to play, as I can't imagine a free player having that much fun after they leave the starting areas without spending any cash, but then again turbine points can also be earned in-game.

Yup. I am curious on how much of the expansion packs I get to keep. I got them all (Moira pack and adventure pack before going free) so I assume as Premium I should be able to keep it all (once my VIP status ran out) Edit: I did read the FAQs, but it is interesting since I bought all the expansion pack and adventure pack. I will get to keep "most of it" but I wonder since VIP get 3 characters slot and adventure pack gives you 2 more, so I should be able to keep 5, while VIP start of with 5+2. That means I would lose 2 characters (unable to play) if I drop to premium. The Gold cap shouldn't effect me (so it says) but we'll see on that.

In DDO, it is possible to level from 1 to 20 in F2P. You are limited in what quests you can do. A lot of the quests are free, but some of the more "fun" quests (at least for me) that yield more rewards and better items are paid quests :(

So things seem to be going pretty well for the folks over at Turbine:

At GDCO, the studio announced that revenues from Lord of the Rings Online have doubled in the past month since switching to a free-to-play hybrid model. What's even better is that Joystiq reports that LotRO has added a whopping million new accounts over these 30 days as well. Turbine is monitoring the server loads and have additional servers waiting if needed. It turns out that the F2P launch was even bigger than the original launch of LotRO back in 2007.

The good news doesn't stop there, either; LotRO has seen 20% of previous subscribers return, three times the numbers of concurrent players at peak times, and over half of the players using the hotly-debated LotRO store for a purchase.
Good for them. They deserve it. :)
