Alright I started a new map, and have been playing on peaceful mode until NOW.

I built myself a wooden shack on top of the first island in my archipelago, and proceeded to basically excavate most of that hill down to sea level.

Then I started exploring some of the other smaller islands and discovered a mine system wit a lava pool underneath (!!!). I wanna explore under here a lot more so I bult stone bridges from between the three islands and used tat as a support to build a two-story fort.

Now I think I'm ready to play for realz, despite my fear. :O

I, too, walked in X's footsteps in order to learn what lay ahead. Single best combined source of play tips and entertainment. Mostly what I learned is that I need to get more used to using hotkeys.

And anyone who does not rejoice with him when he finally retrieves the X-bench probably also thinks that video games can't possibly be Art.

I always preferred Seananners Lets Play Minecraft series of videos compared to X's

So I'm running a server for a couple friends and I. Though I would need to clear it with them first as they help foot the bill for it, I was wondering how many of you would be willing to play there, and possibly throw cash in to help with the cost of running it, if we used it as a Halforums house. It's only a six slot server at this point and we only fill two of those as it stands now, but we could expand it to accomodate more if there is enough interest.

It's currently approx. $30/6 months for the six slots and seems to go up $10 for every two slots that are added. The server itself is based out of Seattle, is for Alpha and I'm running Hey0 mod on it at present.

Edited to fix my dumbass mistake.

Following in X's footsteps, I have created a giant 8x8 skylight in the tallest mountain I was able to find. I've also started a nearby tree farm an built a small nearby station with a bench, furnace and large chest.

So begins my journey to the centre of the earth.

Wen you take a screenshot with the F1-F2 keys, where does it save the image? I can't even FIND my pictures.

This nether thing is very creepy! I play this game with my little sister, but even the sound of the portal makes her scared...

Also, with my render distance I can't even see the Ghasts!

Using Win7, it's in C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\screenshots
An easy way to find the folder is to hit the windows key and then type %appdata% into the search and hit enter, it will open right up to the Roaming folder. Saves a little big of digging through folders.

I've been expanding my minecart system. I used to have two legs, one from the main floor to my mine, and the other from my main floor up to my rooftop garden. Now I've got an external line going to a new tower to the north, still under construction. When that's finished, it too will have a cart track from sea level to the top. To cut down on the total number of carts I need (and to avoid being stranded on the wrong end if I go somewhere without carting) I started carrying one cart with me to use on all the different tracks. One important lesson I learned from doing this do not destroy/collect a cart while you are riding in it at least not if there is only one block of ground beneath you. If the cart is destroyed while you're in it, your feet will be inside the block the cart track is on. If there isn't anything below that block, you'll fall through. The first time this happened to me, I fell from the top of my tower and died. Thankfully not far from my spawn. Unfortunately I didn't catch on to what the glitch was until later, when I fell through the floor of my mine into an already explored cave.

I also found a dungeon today. Don't know what it's mob spawner makes since I'm playing on peaceful, but there was a record, a saddle, 2 gunpowder, 4 iron bars and some bread in the treasure chests. I'll go back later and check to see what it makes. I don't know if I'm happy or disappointed that creeper spawners don't exist.

I might be interested... but $10 for two slots, as in for every two players? I'm not familiar with the typical going rate on game servers, but that seems horribly overpriced, unless I'm misunderstanding.

Hah actually the term is for 6 months at $30. Sorry had to re-read my invoice. So it would actually be about $5/slot every 6 months.

Reason I was confused was it created a subscription on my paypal for $30 every month but wasn't supposed to. That has now been rectified.

Fix'd the post above to reflect the actual prices.

So, what are the differences between single player and multi? I know that minecarts don't work and there's no damage, but is anything else different? How do chests and stuff work? I find mining relaxing, could I load up chests with materials for others to use? I heard that storage minecarts work now, but that only the person who puts stuff in them can get it back out again.

Also if people want to check the server out before commiting that can certainly be arranged. I still need to check with my buddy first though I can't see him objecting to having more people to play with on the server.

Not entirely sure myself as I've only had the server up for about a week or so. I noticed anything my friend put into his chests I couldn't see if I opened them. Though upon thinking back that may have been because he didn't have anythign in them at that time... Further research is required. I'll get back to you.

Did trees start growing larger after biomes got added? I have a tree farm outside my house with scaffolding above it for getting to the upper branches. Trees used to grow so that the top leaves were just under the scaffolding, now they're growing up past it. The tallest trunk reached 13 squares high while I was farming trees today, and that's not counting the leaves. There seem to be more branches as well. It's actually a little disturbing to be suddenly engulfed in leaves while trying to trim down a different tree.

Here's hoping leaves start decaying properly again soon.

I had a sapling I planted this afternoon grow to like 15 squares tall (just the trunk) in the middle of the night AS I WAS WATCHING IT.

It was unsettling.

Multiplayer, when working properly, will be the same as single player survival. Same gameplay; gather materials, build, explore. Monsters still spawn and theres still a day / night cycle but right now its bugged, you can't take any damage from them. So until thats fixed, its basically Classic with material gathering instead of lego mode.

But I figure once Notch fixes it, it'll be cool.

I would have been able to take things out of my friends chest but he didn't have anything inside of the one I had opened. Also I've cleared it with him and if others want in on the server we'd be more than happy to have you. As I stated above, at present, the server has 6 slots, 2 of which are already occupied. We can expand the number of slots if there is enough interest. The server has a whitelist so no one can get in unless I've put your name on it.

$5 for six months per slot, even if we eventually expand the number of slots we have later that should continue to be the price. I can let a few people on the server to check it out before you commit so you can see if it lags for you or not, though I've personally not had any problems with it.

If my laptop could handle SMP, I'd be all over it but right now, it's just a slideshow for me (even with Tiny distance and Fast graphics). I mainly just play at work, my workstation pc there can handle it much better.

What is up with all the redstone torchs and the cactus?
Redstone torches don't go out. With the new patch, coal torches must be re-lit occasionally.

It may be easier for FnordBear to make redstone torches versus lanterns that don't go out, depending on his resources.

Coal torches stay lit. Notch hasn't changed that yet. It was supposed to be part of the Halloween update, but he couldn't get it working in time.
Then again, he may just not go through with it. He's already made some comments that he may take out the new Light-Based spawning rules for inside buildings.

His blog says he already did "Reverted mob spawning back to the old code, it was far to annoying. I have plans on what to do with this."

(I just started using the Painterly Pack so this might look weird to some of y'all.)

Okay so I made a giant skylit vertical mine like X did in his Let's Play:

Here's the view up from the 4th level of the mine, as deep as I am so far:

Here's a view from the mountain across the canyon. I decided to branch out of the first floor of the mine, not remembering that I was near the edge of the mountain. I found some coal, and the mountain's edge, which I decided to turn into a completely open station. It's built in such a way that if a mob tries to drop on me from above, he'll fall right off the mountain.

Here's a slightly different angle, from night, that shows the whole mine system from across the canyon.

I think it's a nice cozy space. This pic shows it from the inside. Across the way you can see a little fort I made to camp out for the night while taking my previous screenshots.

---------- Post added at 08:39 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:36 PM ----------

The awesome thing about crossing the canyon to make that shack and take those screenshots was that I found a HUGE sandy beach behind it, which I'll need to make what is basically Willy Wonka's Great Glass Diamond Mine.

Hey, uh, you do know I've already offered you guys one for free, right? :p

I've been running it for myself and the IRC channel for a while and I recently gave GasBandit the go-ahead to post it here. It is backed up regularly, runs on good hardware and is by all accounts relatively lag free. I've seen several visitors from the forum already, and like we've said before, a bunch of us from the IRC channel play there regularly.

Maintaining it costs me nothing but unused server capacity, so it will run indefinitely at no charge.

At the moment I'm running vanilla server software with no particular rules beyond "don't be a douche", but I'm open to suggestions for making it better.

Have you started any new worlds since the update? It's probably because my spawn point is in some biome, but to me, used to the "classic" minecraft topography, it looked wrong.

And I did! I guess when I'm not being a demeaning ogre nobody pays attention to me unless I've got a castle and a warship :p
I got on and claimed a small space and a mine away from all the hubbub. Haven't had time to do much with it though, but I guess if it's going to get more busy I'd better build so people don't take my spot.

Just a small notice on the server: for now, try to refrain from straying too far from the main village. The algorithms for the biomes need to be updated as they are too flat at the moment, so let's try to avoid getting those chunks generated.

notch is already working on it, and when he's done I plan on doing a little christmas cleaning. Most chunks without any player-made stuff on them will then be deleted to make room for more interesting shapes. I will post a map here before, though, so you can mark down anything you've made off in the distance. But until then it's best to avoid building way out there at all. Shouldn't be that much of a problem, since there's still plenty of space.

I built a little shack in the woods before I pined for all the resources and tools I left in my single player world. I'll probably be back. :)
