Good news! The server is upgraded to Beta, and is up and running and accessible on the latest client.

But bad news - Now Minecart Mania is busted. The rest of the server works fine... but to use any of the minecart systems I upgraded over the last couple days, you'll have to wait until the author of minecart mania updates for hMod 1.3.2 >_<

Drifter and I noticed that the damage meter on equipment doesn't work properly. The meters on our pickaxes would keep reseting themselves, and we thought that maybe they were fully repaired. But later my pickaxe suddenly vanished while using it, even though the meter showed no damage. So it probably was being damaged, but wasn't showing it all because the meter kept reseting.

It appears illusory.. and even trading tools to other people via chest seems to make items that only last 2 or 3 blocks before they break....

Tonight I noticed I started blackscreening like crazy and experiencing other graphical glitches.. after searching the official forums, I found that others who had this problem fixed it by changing their render distance to "normal" (mine was set to "far") and leaving it there. I haven't blackscreened since.

Afforess has just updated minecart mania to 2.3a, compatible with the latest beta version. I've put in a ticket to get it updated, as this seems to be their preferred method of contact for such things. I'm going to bed now, hopefully tomorrow it will be updated... hopefully.

So finally getting to play on new server.

Thoughts:

Lag: Taking in to account I was the only one on....what lag? This thing runs like a dream!

Mods: My spawn point is now where I wish it. This pleases the bear. The magic carpet is by far my favorite thing ever. In no time flat I completed the environmental reconstruction of the Fnordia bombing range, completed a small side project I wanted to do, started the basic connections for my flying archipelago, and did a bit of exploration as well. Only thing we need now is some form of block dispenser (thanks Azure for having a dumpster full of dirt! Fnordia is grateful to it's ally!) I can't really comment on the minecart mod (see need for block dispenser)

Overall impression: Happy bear *coos happily*

Nice pic fnord.

And Gas, I'll try that render distance thing. That's ALWAYS been at far, so I'll try setting it lower and let you know how it works out.

I've had trouble with render distance even in single player. On quite a few machines (usually underpowered ones), using "far" has caused the game to freeze and/or crash after a few minutes (especially when using fullscreen as opposed to windowed). Using a render distance of "normal" has seemed to resolve this on every problematic machine I've tried it on so far (mainly GMA950-based machines).

I was looking through the server commands, and noticed a warp command. However, there doesn't seem to be a way to set up warp locations. What's going on with that? The home/spawn commands are sweet, but the ability to set separate warp locations would also be awesome.

-edit-

Also, regarding the broken damage meter, I've noticed something strange. There seems to be some sort of connection between my pickaxe and the shovel (although I wonder if the slots I placed them in have anything to do with it). Either one or the other will show damage, and the other will not. However, selecting the one showing damage and then hovering over the other will then switch which tool is showing the correct amount of damage. Something similar occurs when you take them out and place them into inventory. I've tried this with an axe, a sword, and with a new pickaxe and shovel, but have thus far been unable to replicate these results.

Having discussed the issue with Noaxark, we're in agreement that we think the overuse of warps would be a detriment to the infrastructure (roads/tracks) and layout planning of the server, and make it too easy for distance to become meaningless, thus bloating the map... so we haven't set up any warps. The command to set warps is also restricted to admins.

After all... if there was a /warp drifter command, who would ever need to see the Driftopia Express?

The overworld of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past has been recreated in Minecraft, and it is awesome:

EDIT: Why does Youtube embedding have to be so damn stupid? On the vB forums, you could change the resolution but not go fullscreen. Here you can go fullscreen, but you can't up the resolution. What the hell is the point to either of those?

Makes sense... I'm just feeling too lazy to build another rail to the castle :)

Oh man these new smilies will take some getting used to.

It's Notch's doing. I have no idea how to acquire one of those, though, and I would very much like to know.

Updated the first post with info for the new server and a fresh cartograph. It's getting kinda messy, though; the new formatting options don't quite agree with my BBcode and keep messing up the stuff I do in editor mode.

Edit:

Since saving a "proper" cartograph now involves so many steps and the resolution is incompatible with the "Save for web..." feature in Photoshop, I made a basic macro. Fellow admins, find it at https://sites.google.com/site/noaxark/mcstuff.

To use it, just drag-and-drop the cartograph png on the exe (or droplet, as it's called). You'll find the output (one pixel-perfect and one browser friendly png) in your C:\ root, but you can easily change it to something else.

Hmm, anyone else having trouble connecting? I keep getting "Failed to connect to the server. Connection refused: connect"

Nevermind.

Used the /spawn command this morning, and ended up in the Land of Madness, west of GasBandit's galleon. The hell?

Also, Magic Carpet has been very laggy for me. Anyone else?

-edit-

GB, that ugly hack in your departure area was my doing. Sorry, I just got frustrated trying to use your system.

yeah, the update broke something with using pressure triggers to set off obsidian boosters.

I fixed the spawn, I have no idea what happened to do that.

Ok, I fixed all my launchers that I had previously upgraded, to now use a 2-button launch system instead of a button-and-pressure-plate system. Seems the dev for Minecart Mania is rather... haphazard in his updates and particularly disdainful of user feedback, so I am not sure I'll even bother bringing this to his attention. I also fixed Edrondol's cart stations, but gonna need more gold blocks inbetween them.

The new changes to minecarts (Notch has apparently decided to (or perhaps accidentaly) make occupied minecarts move faster than unoccupied... a LOT faster) mean that old style friction boosters are highly unreliable... even moreso than they used to be under high lag situations on the old server. However, the gold boosters need to be done at least once every hundred meters (much more often than old style boosters used to) because they don't impart as much inertia... only exactly as much as it takes to get to max speed. This means speed starts bleeding away very quickly. Also, I've noticed occasional sudden huge dips in framerate while travelling in minecarts that also then suddenly coincide with a rapid loss of speed.

Ahh, beta. Feels like alpha.

Hmm... I've tried a few times to log in, but haven't been able to. It keeps telling me

"Failed to connect to the server

Connection timed out: Connect"

Did we change the server address or something?
