A common myth has been perpetuated that Eskimo means "eater of raw meat" in Algonquin, though linguists typically don't support that assertion. The myth is so widespread that most people consider Eskimo as a derogatory term now.

Curious: is Eskimo seen as explicitly derogatory, or is it seen as mostly archaic, kind of like calling a black dude a Negro?

I believe Eskimo was given to them by some other group. To some degree it's like Indians - their name has nothing to do with the people themselves, other than it's the name others provided for them.

Imagine someone walking up to you and saying, "I don't know who you are and I don't care, but when I talk about you to other people I'm going to call you boopsie. Have a nice day!"

I don't know that it's derogatory, so much as it's not the preferred name.

Further, the disparate tribes don't really want to be lumped together with each other as though they were one people/group.

Speaking entirely from hearsay, television and limited research done online, so I don't claim to be 100% correct, from what I understand, linguists don't support that assertion, but they do assert that it comes from the French Excommunier, meaning "excommunicated". In other words, it actually means excluded from the community, or shunned by the Church. Either way, still a pretty prejudiced term.

I've also heard that usage of the term is really only uncommon and thought of as racist here in Canada, where the term Inuit (simply, the people in the Inuit language) has officially taken its place.
