Interesting. They going to have customizations/powers you buy with real money or something?

I could be interested in a F2P version I guess, but I always enjoyed making the toons more than playing them. It just seemed like every level I gained, my "superpowered" character got comparatively weaker than the mooks he was fighting. IE, at level 10, I was ripping through minions 8 at a time... by level 40, more than 2 and I was in trouble. Similar experience with lieutenant level mobs.

Hey, Gas,

From what I've been able to gather, there's three tiers. There's the "pure" F2P, and you'll be limited to two characters total/locked out of some content (including some new power sets they're releasing); there's the "preferred" F2P, where you've been a subscriber before/purchased stuff from the store, and it's essentially the same as F2P except you get to keep all your characters and stuff; and then there's VIP, which is just subscription based.

I figure it would be something like this.

It probably would be similar to LoTRO. You have so many slots, buy the game = get more slots, sub get "max slots" or you can BUY more slots

Hm, so if I once subscribed but haven't in years, would that make me "preferred" f2p?
I would say anyone who purchased it (I bought every single expansion there is) in the past is probably be preferred. (That is what I'm hoping)

Once it goes free, I'm running back to my old account and playing my heart out. I miss my Mechie, healing was so much fun in this game :3

Yes, and you keep anything you've bought from them (so if you've bought a Super Booster or Going Rogue then you keep access). I'm not sure if they take away Masterminds and Controllers from preferred, but it sounds like you get to keep any characters with those sets at least. You also get to keep all of your character slots, including any they've given you for free. You also get to keep any Veteran Rewards and can get more by becoming a VIP.

They've already announced a new Power Set for Issue 21 as well: Beam Rifle. It's got an interesting ability (Disintegration) that adds new effects to some of your powers and can jump onto nearby enemies if you use your basic attack on someone that is already effected. It looks like it's got some interesting powers and I'm betting it's going to be visually based on the rifle from the Mastermind Robotics set.

I'm also told that anyone with an active account at the moment (and who stays current) gets free points to buy stuff when they go F2P.

I'll probably come back when it's F2P. I have so much history and so many fucking badges...

Neat. This was the only MMO I ever really got into. The whole story was really interesting, and people actually grouped at low level, unlike WoW where it seems like everyone just solos the first 80 levels, or whatever it is now. The first time I saw it, the Rikti attacks creeped me out. The only thing I never liked was the overzealous copyright protection, though I do understand it. I only got genericed once though, for Commander Krik [sic], a red-shirted Captain Kirk knock-off.

It's not overzealous at all, considering Marvel DID sue them.

If you say so. I've seen some fairly minor similarities genericed, and I've seen lots of grade-school like finger-pointing from players. Not employees. So, yeah, I think that's overzealous. To be clear, I'm not talking about the act of removing infringing material, I'm talking about the atomic level at which they do it.

Huh. I wonder if my laptop can even run it. I might actually give it another go.

That said, you mentioned something about slots and such. What if I'd already made a gaggle of characters previously?

If you had an account, then your preferred and you should get to keep most of your old stuff. I can't guarantee you'll still have your characters (if they were low in level, they may have been cleared out of the system in a regular name sweep), but they should still be there.

Also, as a heads up for everyone... if you DO decide to play, your going to want to play on Virtue or Justice. Virtue is the "main" server and the one that the devs show up on the most, but Justice also has a good population. Pretty much everywhere else is underpopulated. I'm mainly on Virtue when I play.

Heh. Justice is fine with me.

That's where DOUG hangs out.

This is interesting, I'd try it out.

Any dates?
*checks his schedule*

Well, I've got classes early in the afternoons all next week. But Friday, I'm free. What'd you have in mind, big boy?

It's going to be a while yet. They only just went into Open Beta for Issue 21 on the 9th. Should be out by Fall though.

Just as a heads up, the new powersets are going to be 800 points each, which is $10. So far the only ones that will be out around Issue 21 are Beam Rifle and Street Justice (which should be out shortly after I21).

I'd also suggest that anyone who's interested go out and buy Going Rogue. You can get it fairly cheap right now and it'll carry over to your account.

Heh, if they take away masterminds, it'll probably be a dealbreaker... one of my two main chars was a mercs mastermind named Clyde. The pets were named... oh jeez, if I can remember... minions were Rico, Youngblood and some other guy I can't remember from the Untouchables, Lieutenants were Pretty Boy Floyd and John Dillinger, and the boss pet was Scarface (every time he used his big front cone AE channel attack I just HAD to say "Say Hello to his little friend!"). And yeah, the little woman had an Assault Rifle Corruptor called Bonnie.

My characters that I can remember... I have more than 10 because I received free slots from Paragon Studios.

- Robotics/Force Field/War Mace Mastermind named Dr. Ashburner
- Dark Melee/Invulnerability Brute named Johnny Calvera. Also have a Thugs/Dark Miasma version of him.
- Energy Melee/Willpower Brute named Bruce... something I can't spell. He's a Hawaiian Shark God.
- Epic Archetype Soldier of Arachnos (Crab Spider Spec) called Weaver Romanov.
- Trap Arrow/Sonic Blast Defender named Nate Stevenson.
- Electric Blast/Electric Manipulation/Electric Mastery Blaster called Dynaburst
- Broadsword/Willpower Scrapper that was a Commissar from Warhammer 40k. Beloved during Rikti invasions
- Earth Control/Sonic Emission Controller named Muldvarp (Soil Tosser). Danish Moleman Teen hero.
- Spines/Invulnerability Scrapper named Toxic Fugu. He was a half blowfish/half man mutant.
- Battle Axe/Fire Armor Brute named Ladder 51. He was the combined spirits of an entire ladder of dead firemen.

So as you can see, the sky is literally the limit for the kind of character you can make.

Character creation was my favorite part of the game.

Character PROGRESSION... not so much.
It's pretty easy to progress now. If you really wanted to, you could go from 1-50 in a day of farming at the Mission Architect, but your going to miss out on a lot of fun storylines. I'm not going to lie: City of Heroes is a VERY grindy game, but most of the story lines are good enough that you'll want to keep going through them and most of the Strike/Task Forces have interesting fights in them. Most of them have gimmicks that make them fun. There are also Giant Monsters to fight and Enemy Invasions that happen at random... well... not at random. The Rikti Raids happen anytime someone beats the Lady Grey Strike force. The Zombie Uprisings have a chance of happening anytime some turns in Halloween salvage. Plus you can always just go to Pocket D and chat/RP with people.

Still, there is a lot more to do now then there was when I started playing in '06. It's a much better game.

The only content I remember being REALLY enjoyable was the bank heists. Everything else just seemed like read paper, go to mission, clear out instance, rinse, repeat. Maybe the Rikti stuff would be more enjoyable.

What I enjoyed LEAST was hobnobbing with other people... but then, that's probably just me.

I agree, AshburnerX. I got way more into CoX than any other MMO because of the story. The plots were good, and there were nice multi-mission story arcs. In my opinion, the sweet spot for story and play was the level 25-30 range.

I might have to check it out again when it goes free.
Some of my old characters:

Mosh Pitt - Dual Blades/Willpower Brute
Mosh Posing.jpg

Googie the Jester - Illusion/Force Field Controller
Googie and Crew.jpg

Liberty Dawn - Martial Arts/Fiery Aura Scrapper

I find that the zones made after John Emmert left the company tend to be better... so the best stuff is in the 20+ range. Thankfully, it only takes a day or two to hit 20. Personally, I find the best zones to be...

- Rikti Warzone (Great story missions, an awesome Strikeforce in Lady Grey, and an enjoyable raid)
- Cimerora (Hard enemies and an awesome strikeforce in the Imperious TF)
- Ouroborus (Lets you replay any mission you've completed except SF/TFs. Also has 3 TFs of it's own, which are great)
- Grandville (The BEST Story missions in the game)
- Faultline (Great zone spanning storyline)
- Peregrine Island (basically the hero version of Grandville)
- Croatoa (Fun zone spanning storyline with lots of bonus powers to get)
- Sharkhead Island (Lots of diverse stories)
- Recluse's Victory (Fun PVP zone about controlling areas)

Plus there are many great story lines in the Mission Architect.

No screenshots, but my favorite characters were The Rabb-ot (half rabbi, half rabbit robot, all hero), The Electric Allergy (electric blaster with charged snot), YouTube Comment (a flame-powered dominator), Project Grandma (a technology tank from a weapon X like project involving kidnapped seniors), and some others I forget. I love making characters. Writing the bios and coming up with a battle cry was half the fun.

Maybe that's the different experience. I only played the City of Villains side, never the heroes side (I only bought villains, back when there was a distinction, and by the time they granted access to both for either, I wasn't playing any more).

Villian side generally has better stories (because it was written later) but some of the zones are a pain in the ass to travel through. It's gotten a bit better though.

Oh, and turns out I do have pictures of most of the villains I made (and I made a LOT that I made and never played... here were the 3 I actually played -

Clyde - Mercs Mastermind

Materio Caliente - Fire/Fire brute.

Mr. Horrific - Darkness Corruptor

I nearly gave up completely in '06 after a major graphics bug took months to fix. It's been hit or miss ever since. A month or so in, then nine months gone, rinse, repeat.

A few of my toons:

Kaptain Kelvin - ice/ice blaster. Good name, but never could come up with a good bio.
Kelvinate - Peacebringer. Because I couldn't take Kelvinator.
Mr. Manners - mind/psi controller. inspired by Politenessman from National Lampoon
Captain Marbles - ss/invun brute. Direct ripoff of Captain Marbles from MAD magazine's Superduperman comic. Right down to the SHAZOOM! :D
Ambushed Bug - Warshade. Another direct ripoff. Neither one ever got generic'd
Dr. Teamwipe - healer defender. Self explanatory. ;)
Arsenal FC - poison/thug MM. Worst of the worst football hooligans, but I'm trying to take him rogue to move to Paragon.

To be honest - and this is speaking as someone who played the hell out of that game from beta to about two or three years - there were several factors that stopped me playing it:

1) The endgame. Doug the Troll was my first and only level 50 character. It took me several years to reach that because, quite honestly, I did a lot of farting around playing him in character in Atlas Park. And by the time Doug was in his 40's, I was losing interest in the game. So, I'd play it casually once in a blue moon. But once I'd reached level 50, I realized I didn't want to do all the badge hunts, all the same missions, over and over again. The new levels intrigued me, but it was still kind of the same grind, anyway.

Which would have been fine, if I could find a good, fun group to play with. Unfortunately...

2) The groups that I teamed with - from the City of Heroes Livejournal community - were really focused on the game. Not all of them, mind, and none of them were really a bad bunch, but there were a good number of them (or at least the most verbal) who would quote stats/numbers, talk about this enhancement and that enhancement, etc. And I just didn't care. I played it casually and honestly only cared about smashin' stuff and playing Doug in character (basically goofing around). Of course, Doug was a damn good tank and I played a damn good tank, so my goofing around didn't get in the way of missions. But that focus on stats and crap really turned it off for me.

3) Enhancements. They got far too confusing for me. I understood slotting enhancements into powers and all that. But then, the whole crafting bit of the game came out and it just went totally over my head. Worse, it was just not fun for me. I could probably enjoy it more if it were simplified like, say, Ultima Online, where it was "cloth makes clothing, leather makes this", yadda yadda. But this was "Scientifically Advanced Micro So-and-So" and merge it with "Biologically Lab Designed Macro Orgnism Thingamabobo" (paraphrasing). I was all like "Whuh?" And it just wasn't fun. Yet so many people were obsessed with the crafting stuff.

In all honesty, once I hit level 50, I didn't see much else to do with the game. Yeah, I could roll up another character (which I loved doing), but no character had the staying power of sheer enjoyment Doug had. I played him in-character from day one on the Justice server. Even in a full 8-person team with myself being the only one playing in-character. And that was a total hoot for me to get reactions from people where I'd duck around a corner and say "This am look like job for...", come back around the corner with Doug decked out as Super Doug and shout "SUPER DOUG!"

Doug was a pseudo-celebrity on Justice, too. At any time that I logged in, at least half a dozen people would shout "DOUG!"

Gah. Sorry, I didn't mean to rant on this much. But yeah, the fact that no other character that I played (and even tried playing in-character) matched Doug's fun. Sadly, I never really got to play much of City of Villains for the same reasons.

I'd say the end game is a lot better now, as they actually have some more Strikeforce Raids to do. Off the top of my head...

- Recluse Strike Force: Help Lord Recluse beat the crap out of the Freedom Phalanx.

- Statesman Task Force: Help Statesmen do the same to Lord Recluse and Arachnos. Both the Statesman and Lord Recluse lines reward you with Hami-Os, which are powerful enhancements.

- Time's Arrow: The enemy forces on the island of Cimerora are at their last stand, so now is the time to push the attack! Join Imperious and Daedalus as they take the fight to the traitors, but beware! The enemy has somehow acquired the dark power of the Nictus. Perhaps an old enemy is responsible?

- Barracuda/Dr. Khan Strike Force: The 5th Column have recently begun resurfacing. Find out what they are up to and face off against the Reichsman, the nazi-themed version of Statesman, as he uses his new power.

- Lady Grey Strikeforce: The Nemesis conspiracy has been reveal but the Traditionalists are still itching for a fight. Take your coalition of Heroes and Villains deep into the Rikti War Zone to discover the survivors of the attack that ended the First Rikti War, as well as just what the Honor'ee is and the dark secret behind it's origin.

They also introduced the new Incarnate system. Using the Incarnate system, it is now possible to prove to the Well of Furies (the source of Statesman and Lord Recluse's power) that you are worth of the power of the gods by completing new Trials in Preatoria. This power manifests as new global slots that can affect the entire spectrum of your powers. The trials are so great, you can form Leagues (Teams of up to 48) to tackle them like most people would for the Rikti Mothership raid.

Plus there is the whole new Alignment System that can let you switch from Hero to Villain and such, so now it's possible to do both sides of the content. They've also added a few more lower level Task/Strike forces and their is also the entirety of the Going Rogue content.
