This Is All Kinds Of Wrong of the Day: Security camera footage of a little girl being run over twice near a hardware market in Foshan, China, made the rounds this past weekend on Chinese social networks. Not for the horrific injuries sustained by the child, but for the horrific callousness of over a dozen passers-by who ignored the toddler and left her for dead.

Identified as Yueyue, the two-year-old was initially declared brain dead, but according to her mother, the situation has improved over the past 24 hours, and she is now stable, and has even regained some sensation in her extremities. Yueyue remains in intensive care at the General Hospital of Guangzhou Military Command.
The indifference of 18 individuals who walked by Yueyue without calling for help has generated immense outcry both in China and around the world.

“What’s up with people these days? They make so many excuses to turn a blind eye,” Yueyue’s father told theTelegraph. “The society is so indifferent, so heartless.”

The driver of the first vehicle to run over the child has been caught, according to local reports. He claims he was on the phone with his girlfriend, with whom he had just broken up, and didn’t notice Yueyue.

The Guardian says many blamed the lack of Good Samaritan laws — which protect pedestrians who assist in emergencies — for the lack of empathy.

The Issue: a GIRL in China. Sadly many family rather have male child. Now (according to my parents) some DO kill their girl so to hope to a get a boy (I believe the 1 child per family has been lifted but I am not sure)

Now I don't agree with any of it, but the world shouldn't be surprise by this. If this were to happen any other westernize country, that is a different story, but that doesn't make any less feeling.

Edit: Personally I find it disgusting. A life is a life regardless of gender. I am sad for the little girl and glad she is recovering (even it states the hospital is kinda meh in all of it)

Edit x2: When I was in China, pedestrian doesn't have right of way (even in tourist area like Forbidden city) cars WILL run over you. My uncle was in critical condition cause he never visit China and start walking when the light is Green (which you can normally walk) but many cars in China don't really stop on red or continue going when they can and he got hurt bad

It's a sobering thing, to be sure. Not sure who bears the blame, nor how to even begin to suggest how it could have been prevented. Maybe China can enact some ridiculous laws to overcompensate? That's how the West has traditionally soothed its collective conscience.

Yes, that's exactly what happened, and no, I didn't expect you to have faith in humanity. Mine's been pretty much gone for a while too, but I still get irritated when the dog gets himself sprayed by the skunk, even though I know the dog is going to get sprayed by the skunk every time there is an opportunity for dog-skunk interaction. Protection of the young is an evolutionarily-instilled imperative for just about every species, and supposedly one reinforced by so called "human society." People may say, how can we have come so far? I say, just wait till you see what's next. In 10-20 years, rather than ignore, somebody will stop to eat that child.

And don't give me, "it's china, and it was a girl." There's no way to tell a toddler's gender by casual glance. Even the standard fiction of colored clothes has once again completely decayed.

Here is the horrible breakdown.

Toddler is walking without looking, guy in car hits her and rolls over her with front right tire. He stops when he realized he hit something, girl now laying on the ground under the car. After awhile the guy starts up again and rolls over her with his back right tire.

A lot of people are then seen walking within inches of her motionless body, or driving past on scooters. At one point a truck drives up, barely misses her with his front right tire, but then rolls over her legs with his back right tire. Finally, after what seems like forever, a woman walks in from the side, picks up the girl, and moves her out of the road.

Axel Casien (California)- Father stomped his son to death in front of a crowd that included a fire chief.

Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax (Queens)- Homeless guy tries to stop a mugging and is stabbed. Bleeds to death while people take pictures with their cell phones.

Marcy Renee Conrad (California) - 14 year old girl is murdered by acquaintance. He tells all his friends (over a dozen people) even showing the body to some of them. No one reports it to the police for days.

One of the people in the tests is a researcher that after a certain amount of time would fake a heart attack, saying it over the radio for someone to get help.

They found that when the researcher was talking one-on-one with the person, the majority outcome would be the test subject getting help. The more people they added to the mix, however, the more the group did nothing but sit silently. They found that when people are part of large groups, they are less likely to take responsibility for something, because they feel someone else will take care of it.

To be honest, I like to think I would be different, but I have never been in the situation yet to know. If I heard someone scream outside, would I run outside to help? Or would I think someone else closer to the situation would handle it? There have been times I heard something that sounded like a gunshot, only to think I heard wrong and it was just an exhaust backfire or something, before going back into my book or game. Could I be letting someone die?

I still think it applies. This is a street, one that seems to have people walking it a bit. The two things I think running through the minds of people is either...

1)"Oh look a child throwing some type of tantrum, whatever."
2)"Is... is that baby hurt? Don't look at her the people behind me will help her surely."

One is ignorance and the other is thinking someone else will handle it, thus the Bystander Effect.

1. There was a case in China where a man helped an injured woman to a hospital, and then a court found that he was responsible for some of her medical costs.
2. In another case, a woman was hit by a car and then when a man stopped to help her, she accused him of being the one who hit her.
3. The woman in the video who helped the kid was later accused of wanting fame or trying to get on the news.

All this stuff combined could easily discourage bystanders from helping the kid. If doing something good means you'll incur a financial cost, be wrongly accused of attacking the child, and/or become a public pariah, then I for one would think twice about doing anything good.

And while I recognize I'm biased due to being Taiwanese, it really doesn't surprise me at all to hear about stuff like this coming from China.

During the test, a researcher plays a recording of some actors faking a domestic dispute which escalates to violence. The test is designed to see how many people would get up from their test to investigate the ruckus.
