not so serious but I want to rant II: Redemption

Sorry Emrys, I totally laughed at that.

My jaw is freakin killing me. I don't think it's a cavity, not that I can see anyway, but anytime I clench my teeth, extend my jaw further than talking or chew anything, my bottom left side of my jaw starts to hurt, right around the molar area.

This is driving me crazy!

The last time I fell down the stairs I could at least blame the plastic sandwich baggies (read: very slippery and invisible in low light). Fortunately for me I recovered quickly. The printer I was carrying (one of the large, heavy HP all in one printers) survived to print another day, but the copy/fax feeder no longer functions.

I threw it down the stairs in an effort to preserve my balance.

Turns out printers bounce better than humans - we kinda just crumple.

Wife's job loss means a serious crunch to our budget--I knew that. But apparently this state is a shit in the health department no matter what, so we're needed to lower meds dosages as well.

I'm gonna call my mom and tell her not to get us anything for Christmas this year, and I meant it, because we're certainly not going to be able to afford to reciprocate.

She's kinda hard up for money right now too... but you're probably right.

I can probably get it across to my sisters though. This is gonna be a lean holiday season.

Would they hold it against you if you didn't give a gift back? It might be fun for them just to give to you.

I should thank the cashier at the stop and rob by my house. By her inattentiveness, I did not get to sit around in my underwear drinking PBR while watching the World Series... Really thank you for making me stand around waiting to be waited on...

Not for me. I don't even like getting gifts from them when I am giving them back (I've managed to get them to stop gifting me for my birthday); to receive and not even give would make me feel like shit and I wouldn't know how to make it up to them.

But that would be me holding it against me, not them holding it against me, which they wouldn't do. Only my in-laws do that.

What the hell is this?? How did Liefield ever get hired? I really don't understand. I can draw better than this with my eyes closed. I'm almost willing to bet that that is literally true.
Okay, I was looking at the new 52 series on the shelf, and my eyes land on the new Hawk and Dove, and the first thing I think is, "This has to be a joke. Who drew this? It's terrible! Dove has birthin' hips that could push out a rhino., amongst other problems. My eyes drift down to the bottom of the page, and I see.... Liefield.

Fade, do you remember that big brouhaha with DC back in July about how they don't seem to have too many female writers or artists on staff, and the DC response was "We hire based on quality, not on gender"?

I don't see how anyone could hire Liefield and then say that with a straight face.

Hope they work out. :) Turns out I had to change the way I sleep. Getting better.
So I took my dose at dinner, as the bottle helpfully informed me TAKE WITH FOOD. It also warns you may experience drowsiness. So that's all well and good, and I went for coffee with a friend of mine.

But I don't know what happened after I got home. I sent this text: "I sure it. Sosme devunt I'm thinking more ling but".

I do not remember sending that text. I don't know what I was hoping to communicate. I do know my back is in a lot of pain and I don't want to take them again while I'm at school.

In conclusion, I sure it. Sosme devunt I'm thinking more ling but.

Had to see this for myself:

...Interesting.

The fucking crazy arms that Hawk have perplex me the most. I don't know about anyone else, but my shoulders don't connect to the middle of my bicep.

The thing with the New 52 is that they don't want all 52 books to appeal to everyone (god forbid they attract a customer base that wants ALL of their product) but rather they want all of the books to appeal to SOMEONE...so while there is quality writing with lesser known characters going on with Animal Man and Swamp Thing, and generic superhero goodness with Aquaman and Hawkman, and the standard batman varieties (hero stuff in Batman, detective-y stuff in Detective) they are also reaching out to those who legitimately enjoyed the EXTREEEEEMMMMEEEEE of the 90s with titles like Hawk and Dove and Red Hood.

Dear Grad School;

When I applied for residency/internship, I listed my preferred geographic locations in addition to providing fairly detailed information about the finances I would be using to pay to the 6 mandatory trips I would be making back to campus during the 2 year residency period. This was a month ago. Over the course of that month I have been subjected to countless 'informal' and 'friendly' inquiries about where (and why) I want to go on residency and if I've thought of the costs involved. In the past week I have had 2 formal discussions with both the residency co-ordinator and my faculty advisor about the financial burden associated with doing residency farther afield than Alberta or Saskatchewan. I get it. Really. You haven't had a student go outside the prairies in many many years, it's not the normal process, and you want to make sure I don't drain the bursary fund* with all the travelling I will have to do between the residency site and school. Fine. But guess what, if I have to stay on the prairies for another 2 years, I am going to drop out of this program. I will go nuts. I am not from here, I wasn't too thrilled about moving here in the first place, I never inteneded to stay here, and I never hid any of that. So quit whining and throwing up piss poor reasons to try and get me to stay here. It's not going to happen.

Sincerely,
Dirona

*Let's not forget that I have accessed this fund once in my 2 years here thus far, to replace my computer when it died a third time, and I needed to update the motherboard in an old PC of a friend's and built the rest of it out of scavenged parts. That's it. In comprison to the other student who is applying for residency who has been milking the fund for 8 YEARS for a new car, a new computer, holiday travel, etc etc etc. All while never getting an outside job, while I WORK while in school, take more classes and get better grades. But I'm not bitter.

Why do soundtracks for Ghibli movies have to be so expensive? $26 just seems like overdoing it; $40 is just wrong. I don't want to "acquire" the scores to Ponyo and Earthsea, but the prices are just silly. I got the Mononoke score, what I consider one of the finest movie scores ever written, for $14 from FYE. It seems that was only because the localization of that film wasn't through Disney, and I guess Disney doesn't see a point in localizing the scores for the movies under their license.

Rgg.

Are you getting import copies of these scores? If so, that's why: domestic prices are ludicrous in Japan. The Japanese music industry thrives on "rentals", in which people rent a CD and then burn it at home. They even sell the blank CDs in the shop. So the price reflects the fact that the only way to pull a profit in the music industry there is to charge 40 bucks for a CD.

The only reason they don't do it here in the US is because no one would pay that much.

I understand that there; I just don't get why there's no localization. I don't even remember how I was able to purchase the scores for Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, and Castle in the Sky for affordable prices. Ebay usually saves me, but even Ebay has Earthsea going for $30+.

The movie soundtrack market is small, especially for import movies. They would literally lose money just printing up the CDs.

Of course, that doesn't excuse the lack of an iTunes version.
