Obama said that as he understood it, Sebelius was wary of a 10-year-old or 11-year-old going into a drugstore and buying a medication — one on the shelves next to "the bubble gum and batteries" — that could be harmful if not used properly.

Completely riduclous. I've taken friends to get the morning after pill (more often than I'd have liked to) and it's NEVER been on a store shelf. It was always required that you speak with a physician and request it from the "medicinial storage". Why the hell would you keep 14-17yr olds from being able to request this pill? Isn't teenage pregnancy already ridiculously rampant in the US?

All the arguments of "the child should tell her parents and have them go with her to get the pill" is absurd. The largest reason that teenage pregnancies happen is because a child is too afraid to tell their parents that they are sexually active until it's too late anyway.

The side effect to these pills are minor and

Obama rallied around Sebelius' arguments that younger girls may not be able to understand the medicine's labeling or use the pill properly. He insisted he was not involved in the decision in any way.

Is even more absurd. It's one pill, you take it, the end.

I believe it does say that anyone over the age of 17 won't require a prescription still but they can't possibly look at the rampant teenage pregnancy in this country and think this is a solid idea.

The biggest flaw in this whole thing is the assumption that anyone can buy it "off the shelf" when it's still an "over the counter" medication. Granted you don't need a prescription but some 10yr old isn't going to go grab one a buy it. Not to mention the cost of it being normally $50+ I sincerely doubt ANYONE would buy one without requiring it's use correctly.

Not sure what you're implying Pat, I think David was talking about how the pill is most effective in the first 24hrs and it could take a 16yr old alot longer than that to get it.

We didn't need to see a physician when we got ours, but we DID have to ask the pharmacist, who were VERY clear in informing us that this was NOT an "abortion pill." Pretty idiot-proof, if you ask me...

Like you say, $50 is a bit steep to be a "casual" purchase. My concern would be that too many teens would be embarrassed to speak to anyone regarding the issue, thus missing the narrow window wherein the pill is effective.

I didn't imply anything by it Charon, what I meant was that this article is talking about preventing anyone under 17 from getting the pill without a prescription (telling their parents). I wasn't implying a Chris Hansen moment or anything.

Very very true Sera, however even sometimes the best parenting fails in the face of teenage hormones. I would argue that but if there really was good parenting involved, I'm sure the child would still feel capable of speaking to their parents after the fact, still, good parenting or not, there still shouldn't be a law preventing it.

She is a year younger than I. She has 5 children by five different fathers. She iscurrently pregnant with a sixth. She announced she was with child on facebook. The next day she claimed she went to the hospital for stomach cramps and was told she miscarried.

She went on a cocaine bender that night.

Then two days after she declared the hospital had 'messed up' and that she was still pregnant. Everyone told her she should sue the hospital but she came back with "oh, it's an honest mistake".

She just wanted to fucking party. My sister once asked her what she thought about abortion. She told her she thought it was disgusting behavior.

Human beings are biologically wired to want to start breeding the moment they can and for most of recorded history that is exactly what they did. It's a relatively recent (I.E. Less than 200-300 years) change for us to wait until later in life to do it... mainly because we didn't live half as long as we do now. It's not surprising that it's still a big issue: It's hard to fight thousands of years of instinct.

I was implying that the "adults" behind this don't want a "cooling-off" period for a panicked teen. Instead they want a Government-mandated 24hr period in which they may freely bully a girl into keeping it, and even if she stands firm they can still wrap up with, "Well OK then, but it's probably too late now anyway. Ta-taa!"
