What are you playing?

Plus they are adding in some DLC areas I believe... as well as an entire second line of figures/characters this year.

Seriously, these thing are selling out everywhere. NO ONE can keep them in stock. I wouldn't be surprised if we get a Skylanders cartoon soon.

Exact opposite here (and I was talking about the console version on length btw) they're flooding the shelf here. The extra figures and the initial game. Then again I live in a poorer city/part of the country. Noone's willing to pony up that kind of start up.

Finally getting started on Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker in the Metal Gear Solid HD collection. I'm actually fairly impressed with it. It controls better than any of the ones I've played, is challenging without being unfair, and introduces some mechanics I enjoy. Probably the best one I've played since Snake Eater.

I can't believe people think that 12 hours is long. That's ridiculously short. Games aren't meant to be finished in one setting. That being said, it still beats the pants off of The Force Unleashed 2. That game clocks in at no more than 4-5 hours with absolutely no replay value.

The only reason I wasn't pissed is because I got it during the steam holiday sale for, like 6 bucks. If I had paid full retail price for that game, I would have freaked out.

No, 12 hours is not "ridiculously short" nor is it long. 12-15 hours (or so) has been the bread and butter game length for multiple console generations (unless you want to go back to the 16 bit and 8 bit times when 12 hours was an INCREDIBLY long game). Unless it's a grind heavy MMO or padded nonsense like most RPGs most games aren't much longer than 12 hours. NEVER have been.

And if 12 hours is one sitting, then, well, that's another thing.

12hrs is a week. Easy. And yes, I do believe in the 16bit era of games of 12hrs being a long game or at LEAST the short games being so hard there's no way you would have beat it in a week. Don't give me any nonsense about "well they can't make them long because of how graphically intense so you can't compare them to 8-16bit graphic era games" yatta yatta cause Skyrim/Fallout/Final Fantasy would like a rebuttal.

Just because it's the norm does not make it right.

Not to mention, again, Skylanders isn't your regular quick 12hr game price. It's an extra 10-15 for the little "platform" for your figures then if you want DLC/More Characters you pay $8-12 each.

So you could easily pay $100+ for a 12hr game and you really think that's a defendable thing?

Skyrim and Fallout are definitely the exceptions but they're open world games and go for a completely different dynamic than your average action game. Can you imagine playing God of War for 100 hours? I think that actually might be a punishment in one of the layers of hell.

Oh GOD no. I think Skylanders is brilliantly evil. I've never seen something as blatantly exploitative of children (at least in video game form). I'm absolutely not surprised it's by Activision.

And I haven't been defending the length of games, I've just been pointing out (mostly) that game length in general is not as long as some seem to think they are. Average game length is just over 12 hours and really, it always has been with some exceptions (generally in the RPG genre).

I'll say this for Skylanders: At least when you buy the DLC, you get a fucking action figure. I've paid more for less as far as DLC goes.

Though, if you look at the list you quoted, most of the top tier games are 15-20 hours (Assassin's Creed, Batman:AA, etc..).

Looking at that list, I never realized how really short the God of War games were.

Bayonetta isn't a 10-hour game to me, but maybe that's because of the difficulty I play on. Neither is Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, but that's because I actually wanted to do all the extra shit in that one, unlike with AC and AC2.

L.A. Noire was a good length for a full-price game, between 20 and 25 hours. I wouldn't say all games should be the same length; I'm just not going to pay $60-$70 for a 10-hour game. I'll wait until it's being resold at Gamestop for $20.

Are there even any good games coming out this year? I'm struggling to think of anything of worth or interest. I'm sure I'm blanking on something. I guess that Studio Ghibli game for the PS3 and Resident Evil 6. That's all I got right now.

Bioshock Infinite is pretty high up on my list. Mass Effect 3, Borderlands 2 and WoW: Mists of Panderia are almost sure buys as well. GTA:V but we'll see if they learned what they did wrong with IV.

I've been playing a fair bit of Bunch of Heroes (thanks Nick!), and I've got to say I'm surprised. This game definitely is more fun than it is good. It's got flaws, but despite that I really enjoy it. It's very self-aware in it's camp, and even seems to be aware it's just a budget shoot-em-up. It doesn't bother working too hard to tell the story, because the plot doesn't need it (Zombie Maritians invade and start making Nazi Zombies to help them, so a group of international heroes fights them off.)

I could see Bioshock slipping to the end of the year or even into next year. I would be sad but not surprised.

Skylanders isn't evil enough because that shit is sold out everywhere so I can't give them more money in the name of my children well enough.

Forgot about Bioshock Infinite.

Oh, and if they ever decide on a release date for The Last Guardian, it'd be nice if that came out this year.

RE: Operation Raccoon City looks like it might be good. That'll be out in a few months.
Yeah, I've been following the ARG for that one pretty heavily. The videos we've seen all look fantastic and I'm eagerly waiting to hear what the actual reviews say. Still don't know if Ian Sider is dead yet though... Umbrella is trying VERY hard to convince us he is though.

I believe Silent Hill: Downpour is coming out that month as well. It's looking surprisingly decent for a game from Eastern Europe.

Considering that I have played over 200+ hours in Skyrim and still have 1/2 the map to explore?

I can't agree more.

There needs to be more Skyrims or games with replay value rather than the 1 shot, linear as fuck overpriced games.

Yep, finding them has been a bitch and a half - internet scalpers on eBay and Amazon are scooping up entire shipments when the stores' door open, and marked them up at least three times retail. Been lucky enough to grab a bunch, and only need three more, but damn, some assholes are trying to get a c-note for some individual ones.

And Dei, if you're still hunting, this helped a bit.

I have yet to find a single fire or wind Skylander. I managed to snag some off Amazon as they were in stock, but still haven't found any of those.

Because the suits didn't think the game would sell without some sort of brand recognition....so they picked a brand name that hasn't been even close to relevant in a decade. SUITS!
