Not a movie I saw, but...The Oogieloves in the BIG Balloon Adventure set a box office record.

The record was for the worst opening weekend for a wide (2000+ theater) release. They made an average of $207 per theater it showed in. Over the entire weekend. Even if the average theater did only four showings a day (it opened the Wednesday before Labor day), then it averaged one paid viewer per showing.

This is hands down my favorite monster movie. Interesting location and cast, it handles it's message well, and it's very funny at times. Really one of the best English flicks I've seen in a long time.

Agreed. If the reason for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress is to honor the actress who did the best job supporting the leading role, then Tomei deserved it for her performance.

On to my most recent movies:

Hero (my first viewing)
Languid and cerebral and highly cinematic. The movie plays out a bit like an episode of Ruroni Kenshin*. Lots and lots and lots of dialogue, and half of the action in this movie takes place within the dialogue itself. There is a lot of physical action, sure...but it is the mental battles (both without and within) that are the film's main foci.

WALL*E (my first viewing)
I'm sure this movie would've been pretty amazing had I seen it in 3D on the big screen.
It's a love story (of sorts) told without words (mostly) with a couple of other (rather important!) messages (and in-jokes) woven in. It is at times inspirational, nostalgic, cautionary, witty, and tender, and I liked it quite a bit for every one of those reasons.

Imagine what it would be like if a modern boy band decided to do a movie that played out a lot like a Scooby-Doo episode from the 70's (except with more "artistic freedom.") Now imagine that boy band is The Beatles and you've about got it.

Raiders of the Lost Ark
It was playing in my theater's IMAX. This film is still awesome, and getting to see it in a theater was a great treat.

Almost certain it wasn't in 3D. I don't think 3D was half as common as it is now until James Cameron's Avatar was released, which was the following year.

Sucker Punch

I remember being really "eh" on the movie when it was announced. Zack Snyder directing it didn't help. But it got a lot of praise from critics, including a big film geek friend of mine who is rarely wrong about good or bad movies (though we've disagreed here and there). I tried watching it for the first time earlier this year and only made it about 30 minutes before shutting it off. Can't remember why now.

Anyway, MovieBob at The Escapist recently did a 2-part video deconstructing of the movie. The ideas he presented were enough to convince me to give the movie another try.

Having just finished watching it? It's fantastic. While the ideas and symbolism is pretty sloppy at points, the points it gets across are quite good. Plus, the visuals are amazing (par for the course with any Snyder movie) and the soundtrack is wicked.

Honestly, I'm sorry it took me this long to appreciate the movie. I'll probably buy it on BluRay at some point.[DOUBLEPOST=1347413405][/DOUBLEPOST]Watch these before you hit that disagree button so quickly.

I thought this movie was fantastic and I'm glad you appreciate it now, even if you didn't then.

Honestly, the visuals and soundtrack were enough to make me like it. And like I've said before, I'm easy to please when it comes to movies, I always like movies that people hate.

This honestly surprises me with some of your responses on the "Things that are intended to be sexy" thread. This movie has feminists up in arms.

I don't mean hardcore feminists, I mean anyone who has a feminist bent in the least. In fact, until Kags made this post, I hadn't heard of a single woman who didn't find the entire movie offensive.

My weekend was Aussie-themed: Finding Nemo 3D and Cane Toads: The Conquest 3D. The latter was bordering on mockumentary, with the interviews and Darwin Award candidate and stoned dog POV after licking a toad. Still, highly recommended, a very funny documentary of the futility of trying to control cane toads in Australia.

I've watched it with women and have female friends who own it. So I guess it's all in who you know.

Last two movies I saw I'm almost ashamed to admit I enjoyed.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
I actually thought it was better than the second and third ones. I felt like they, shockingly reeled Jack Sparrow back a bit from those ones, and although it was till heavily involved in the supernatural, it wasn't as batshit weird as the third one. Penelope Cruz > Keira Knightly. I was hoping for more from Ian McShane as Blackbeard though. I'm surprisingly interested in the 5th one now. Curious who they're going to put in it. They've done Davy Jones, they've done Blackbeard, and I'm pretty sure Jack Sparrow is based on Calico Jack Rackham (same jolly roger, and Penelope Cruz and Keira Knightly's characters are definitely inspired by Anne Bonny and Mary Read- the female pirates who fought with Calico Jack).... I don't know any other really famous pirates so I'm curious who's next.

Easy A
Watched for Emma Stone. The movie seems to be trying to emulate John Hughes, and there's even a bit of a love letter to 80s teen movies in the middle. But it fails at that, because it gets high school so very, very, very wrong. But, Emma Stone is delightful. You can tell she was having fun, and the stuff with her family in the movie was all genuinely funny. I don't just say this because Emma Stone is so god damned gorgeous, but because she is also very good. I don't think any other young actress workign right now could have made this movie watchable, but Emma Stone made it worth while.

I liked Easy A. It had more wit and lines than your average teen comedy. Plus, it was blatantly a John Hughes tribute (I think it was made briefly after his passing.)

I also dug PotC: OST, but I think the problem is that the character of Jack Sparrow clearly isn't built to carry a movie on his own. The reason for his sidekicks in the other ones was not just to move the plot forward, but also give him something to bounce off of. When he's the star, it's harder for him to be popular second-tier character.

Holy eff am I glad I didn't watch this in theatres. I mean that in the best way possible. The movie was brilliant, I just think I would have freaked the fuck out if I hadn't been able to pause this periodically. I can't think of another movie that has elicted such a strong sense of discomfort/ anxiousness from me. I felt like it was not manipulating not just my emotions like all movies should, but my freaking sanity. Brilliant.

I need to watch something incredibly stupid now so I can calm my brain the hell down.

I couldn't agree more, I was so against watching this movie until my sister wouldn't shut up about it. So very glad I listened. I also am glad I saw this at home though as there are some parts that would have very much been ruined by annoying theatre goers.
